The gun was legal under AZ law, no state or Federal Law would cause mental disease or instability to flag a person on a background check.

Yes unfortunately, but most other states do have laws on the books to prevent folks with severe mental illness (as they deem it) from purchasing firearms. That being said, I admit the gunman may not have even tripped some of those laws.

There have been unbalanced individuals who have driven their cars into daycare centers as well. Do we confiscate their car keys too?

I would argue that the utility of a car and gun are not equal. A car can be necessary for holding a job and caring for oneself in general. That is not the case for a gun.

The license argument is an interesting one though as many states are requiring the elderly to re-test in order to prove they are still capable of driving, in the wake of those incidents. Personally, I have no problem ensuring that people are capable of responsibly operating dangerous things.

Certainly it is a very complicated issue, but I'm simply not content with the notion that you can't interfere with someone else's right to something if they potentially lack the capacity to responsibly carry out the right. You also have the right to free speech, until you decide to yell fire in a crowed location.

All the more reason to punish people who hurt others while drunk, or texting. People who legally use their guns in self defense have them confiscated and held. Yet drunk drivers get to keep their cars.

That's a whole other story. As someone whose life was altered dramatically by a reckless driver I have zero sympathy for the whole "the car is a necessity" argument. You prove yourself incapable of being a safe driver kiss goodbye to your license for a decade and learn to ride a bike or take a bus.
