Arizona congresswoman shot

News. No word yet on the identity of the shooter.

Awful situation. It was a formal event posted on her website for a constituent meeting, so I suspect it was some politically-motivated nutbag.

NPR is reporting she has died.

I updated the thread title. When I read that she was shot, I was hoping it was just a minor wound.

From twitter, Sarah Palin's targeted Democrats map:

I take back how much fun I was going to have watching the Tea Party disintegrate.

Disintegrate? They've started in on Second Amendment Remedies and they "won" the election.

In this day and age, one of my first thoughts was "organized terrorist attack". Then I heard it was a single shooter, and changed immediately to "crazy-ass white male".

MSNBC just retracted their statement that she passed, but that she's in very critical condition, so it's all rather up in the air still.

Her office was one of several vandalized during the health care debate as well:

This is an interview from last March she did in response to bricks being thrown through her campaign office's window.

I really don't want this to be politically motivated, but I'm having a hard time coming up with any other reasons right now.

You can't make any judgement until we find more out about the shooter. For now, i'm going to go by the brief report I heard that after she was shot she still had some movement, and hope that there's a positive ending out of all of this.

So far she actually hasn't died yet. A hospital representative just said that she's still in surgery.

A spokesperson for the Hospital reports she is still in surgery at this time.

Heard the same thing. Media can't seem to agree on the number of other people who have died. Just "unconfirmed reports of fatalities" now.

Congresswoman Giffords is in surgery, but is expected to pull through.

The Sarah Palin stuff is kinda crazy. People keep retweeting "Commonsense Conservatives & lovers of America: "Don't Retreat, Instead - RELOAD!"" and the above image.

No sh*t.

It has been confirmed that a 9-year-old girl was shot, and sadly passed away at the hospital.

Rep. Giffords is out of surgery. The bullet apparently passed through her, but the surgeons are very optimistic.

The surgeon just said in a press conference that a 9 month old was shot and has died at the hospital

And there's also talk that a federal judge has died.

Just saw this at Huffington:

Tuscon Citizen
"Police arrest man near Thornydale and Magee Roads who is suspected of being connected to the shooting of Giffords and others. A third man is being sought."

News is being plastered all over my TV about this. I don't live in the Tuscon area, but it's another dark, sad day in our state. Seems like they are pursuing a political motivation at this time. At least one suspect in custody. 10 people were admitted to the hospital. 5 are still critical.

Edit: One station is report 18 shot and 6 killed.

A sad day indeed. Thoughts and prayers go out to the families touched by this.

No sh*t.

Isn't it just assumption that it's Tea Partiers (or even right wing people) at this point, or is there some firm evidence of this?

This is horrible and I wish everyone involved finds health and support as they recover. My hope is that this was just a crazed individual, and that this event unites us as a nation and brings down the rhetoric from all sides.

Yes

The local NBC station here in Tucson is currently running split screen coverage between this and a football game. The football game gets about twice as much visual real estate and the shooting coverage is about 1/3 obscured by the station logo. Real nice, NBC. That's a really nice little visual metaphor telling us where your priorities are: dead people or dudes throwing balls. That's [email protected]#$ing great.

Whenever a politician gets hurt or vandalized, there's a cynical part of me that thinks some people in their own camp are secretly pleased by it, because it gives validation for attacking and generalizing about their political enemies. I can see this happening again.

I can see you've been on Twitter today.
