Everything Must Go! 2010 Pile Blowout

Pages

As is our tradition around the Pile of Shame, October through December are the months where we spend a large amount of time and money stockpiling our additions to next year's pile (I'm looking at you, Steam end of year sale). There's also quite a bit of new and shiny in the next few weeks and months that make playing older games a lot more difficult.

With that in mind, this is the last Pile of Shame thread for 2010. Pick your games wisely and add a couple for good measure. I'll be keeping up with the thread and everyone's progress. Good luck.

A quick reminder, in order to be considered "Pile of Shame" the game needs to be at least three months old. Otherwise, it's just a new game you haven't gotten to playing yet.

Also, if you are curious about some of the previous threads, Pick's of the Pile, etc... Please go here and check out the Google doc I setup.

Let's get on to the games!

The year end Pick of the Pile is

Red Faction: Guerrilla

IMAGE(http://uk.playstation.com/media/146653/redfaction_hero.jpg)

"Red Faction: Guerrilla takes place in the year 2120. The Earth Defense Force (EDF), the allies in the original "Red Faction", have become the main antagonist of Guerrilla. Although initially supportive of the Martian miners, Earth's natural resources have run scarce, and as a result, its world economy has collapsed from rampant speculation of commodities and lack of production. Under pressure by Earth's corporations and leaders to acquire the resources of Mars at any cost and at a pace to meet Earth's high demand, the EDF has forced Martian society into a permanent state of unfree labour. The newly-reformed "Red Faction" arises to rebel against the EDF, drive them off the planet, and begin fairer negotiations with Earth." (wikipedia.com)

I'm going to use the excuse of it being a special pile thread, and that's why I didn't carry anything over from the previous month, but the truth is, I just got back into town from traveling and I'm feeling lazy.

There I said it.

Haha, nice one! Well, i'm back on the pile-o-shame wagon after a few months away from 'committing' myself to anything. I think in the next month i'll play:

Beyond Good and Evil (Multi)
Summoner (PC)

I know i can do BG&E but not sure about Summoner. It all depends on my situation...

I just want you to know how much I appreciate these pile threads - they really do give me a lot of motivation to push through my older games and get them done. Thanks, man!

That said -
Fallout 3 with the DLC
GTAIV
The Darkness

That give me 3 months. Let's see:)

Not going to wait for the HD remake of Beyond Good & Evil, Duoae?

---

I'll be ambitious... here's what I hope to finish before the end of the year:

The Witcher (PC) - I failed last month, but got to chapter 5
Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction (PS3) - going to use this to cleanse my pallet after The Witcher
Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising (PC) - not started
Lucidity (PC) - not started
Demons Souls (PS3) - started, but never finished; will restart.

Frankly, given my play time, I'll be surprised if I get through all of these. There aren't a lot of fall games that excite me (yet), so maybe there's hope.

Okay, there are enough unfinished games staring down at me from my shelf to warrant giving this a try

Chrono Trigger (DS)
Red Faction: Guerrilla (360)
Ace Combat 6 (360)
Batman: Arkham Asylum (360)
Yager (XBox)
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath (XBox)

Hmm, Chrono Trigger's the easy one, I'll be in the countryside for Christmas, the short days and quiet nights will help me burn through that one. The other's I've mainly been dealing with by placing DVD cases in front of them, so we'll see

Let's do this. Shoot for the moon, keep the PS2 spinning. Xenosaga II and Xenosaga III.

I second Sally's sentiment. Saying it out loud really helps the committment.

Given the 'longer' lead times for completion, I'll be tackling the following time sinks (all on the 360).

Assassin's Creed
Oblivion (main game and all guilds)
Shivering Isles Expansion
Mad Moxi's Thunderdome
Magna Carta 2

I may get through these as well for entertainment purposes, but I'm not game to commit, just incase the others (or holiday goodies) over take them.
Alan Wake
Crackdown
Mass Effect 2

I'm so close to finishing Bioshock. I'll try to get it done this month.

Since Heavy Rain just got done with its Move patch, I'll be tackling that as well.

OK, trying to get back to the Pile and to getting some good gaming in that I've neglected!

Fable 2 (In prep for Fable 3) (X360)
Batman: Arkhan Asylum (X360)
Half Life 2 (PC)
(Ducks as all of Goodjer-dom throws rotten tomatoes at me)
Dawn of War II (PC)

Now excuse me while I go play Civ V...

Put me down for:
-Sam & Max Season 2. Season 1 was fantastic and I'm looking forward to getting into the second season.
-Oblivion (I have a few guilds quests to finish off and then I'll finally be done) (360)
-Assassin's Creed (360)
-Psychonauts (PC)
-Beyond Good & Evil (PC)

I think that should cover me through the end of the year.

- Sam and Max Season 2 for me as well.
- Mega Man Zero Collection (DS)

School's getting busy but I'm going to try and finish Muramasa on the Wii this month.

Put me down for Uncharted 2. I'm also doing a Deus Ex playthrough but I've beaten it before so that doesn't count.

I'm not going to carry over either of last month's failures; instead I'll note LoZ: The Wind Waker and Lolo 3 if they happen to be completed.

Instead, I'll list some short games...
Sam & Max 303 and 304 (PC/multi) - 303 is almost done already. 305 won't be eligible until November, but I'm planning on doing that one as well.
Time Gentlemen, Please! (PC) - I liked Ben There, Dan That! and I'm looking forward to this one.
LocoRoco (PSP) - I'm on world 4-4 of 5-8, so it shouldn't be much longer depending on how much I explore.
Mr. Robot (PC) - I have 29% of the achievements and just did a crane section made famous in someone's signature. I assume it's not overly long?
"A 2d Sonic Game" - I've never gotten far in any Sonic game, so this is a goal of mine. Might as well start from the beginning and go with Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis)

...plus a few longer ones:
Dungeon Siege (PC) - Continuing my GPG streak I began with Supreme Commander last month, I'll give this another go. I've played through 40-60% twice before, this time I'm finishing what I started. Depending on how things go, I might tackle Legends of Aranna as well.
Ghostbusters (PC/multi) - Everybody recommends playing on easy just to enjoy the story, but would "normal" really be so fun-ruining?

beeporama wrote:

What the heck, here's my longshot; I wasn't even considering it, but put me down for Xenosaga III as well.

I'll be interested in your impressions. I only made it maybe an hour in back in the day before being confused by the gameplay and unhappy with the graphics.

AUs_TBirD wrote:

In a word, YES.

Ok, I'm going on a Relic binge and see if I can't knock out DoW: II and CoH, as well as The Witcher. I'm also going to carry over Bioshock 2 and see if I can wrap that up quickly. I may add more later, but let's see how that goes for now.

Two happy things happened at once. During Alabama's domination of Florida I managed to knock off LocoRoco as well. It's charming, different, and generally fun, but at times during the later levels it did feel that it overstayed its welcome as its gimmick was wearing a bit thin during the less super-imaginitive stages.

This title really stimulates the OCD gland, but at the same time kicks it in the balls by making some of the collectibles really frustrating to reach with your imprecisely-controlling sack of...goo, I guess. Towards the end I had to limit my attempts at certain optional paths in order to preserve my enjoyment of the game. It has great music, nice visuals, and a unique concept; even if it isn't perfect, it's still a very good first effort.

Oh, i've gotten through about half of it before stopping and getting RPG fatigue and it was only by chance that i discovered it works on Intel integrated graphics without any patches or anything! I hadn't been able to get it to work since i used Win 2000 as it's a win98 game and doesn't like new things like directx or XP... Though, as i said, it's running fine (well, a little slowdown in places) on my laptop!

The game is pretty much "The Witcher". In fact i'm surprised that no one really mentioned this when that game came out. There are parallels in game design and mechanics (e.g. chaining) and, while the nuanced 'choices' aren't there in Summoner there is also a lot of 'sticking around in a big city' for the first 10 hours or so of the game (IIRC).

I'll let you know how i get on once i start playing it properly. I only put in around an hour to get into the city and the quests there.

Hmmm. Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Put me down for Mass Effect (360). I shouldn't get too ambitious here but well, if this is the last pile thread of the year than one could reason it spanning the entire fourth quarter, hence I'll add in Clive Barker's Jericho (360) and Mother 3 (fan translation!) for kicks.

Let's see how that there gamble goes!

I'm on a bit of a replay binge at the moment, but once I've gone through some of the stuff I'm on I will jump into Red Faction: Guerrilla and give it a solid go.

I'll be interested to see what you think of this one. I'm not a huge FPS fan (I usually need a good story to drive me through the action) but I actually took the time to fully 1K this one. I think it's one of the more underated shooters on the 360, but then I'm not really a purist so that might be why I had so much fun with it.

Definately check out the road map on x360a for some helpfull 'cheats'. I entered all the codes, and still had an enjoyable experience, so the three listed aren't game wreckers if you want to use them.

This is my first pile thread! I feel like a Madonna song...

Console

Mass Effect 2 (in progress)
Dragon Age: Origins: Awakening (sort of in progress?)
Lost Odyssey
Splinter Cell: Conviction (next in queue, GameFly rental)
New Super Mario Bros. Wii

PC

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl (sort of in progress?)
Half-Life (sort of in progress?)
Mother 3 Fan Translation (sort of in progress?)

It's funny, until people started mentioning PC games I didn't even think to mention any of mine. I just can't continually game on my computer because I just...I dunno. It's not a gaming machine for me. So whenever I think "Hmm, what should I play?" my mind completely skips over those games.

Though S.T.A.L.K.E.R. doesn't help itself. Every time I want to play it I have to shut every program down and set my laptop to high performance settings. Half-Life I've started and never finished for the past decade, and Mother 3 I will probably need to restart in order to remember what I was doing.

Needless to say, I'll probably clear my console pile before I clear anything else up.

There's absolutely no hope in hellof me finishing any Pile Game in the same month New Vegas and Gothic 4 are released (among others), but what the hell. Put me down for Arx Fatalis. Might as well give that another shot since I grabbed it off GOG recently.

That's why you have 3 months. :p

Oh, and I will add in The Path. I played as one of the girls already. What a fascinating thing.

MrDeVil909 wrote:

Does it change depending on the girl?

Spoiler:

I played once a good long while ago but didn't know what to do other than either go directly to the goal, or get lost over and over and discovering apparently random things.

5 hours in and Bioshock 2 is getting a little bit interesting. I think that's one of the flaws to the game. The first grabbed you because Rapture was new then. This time they try to do the same sort of slow burn, but it fails because the "wow" factor is much, much less.

Spoiler:

As I understand it. They each have their own wolf, and I would imagine they act differently when you let them idle. I tried to play a second girl last night but the game was crashing. :/

Chalk me down for Mass Effect 2 (X360). My copy of Civ5 came in the mail Saturday, but I told myself I'd finish ME2 before diving in. I'm near the point of no return (about 70% of the game is finished), so the peer pressure / support from this thread should get me through!

Dragon Age Origins: Awakenings- bought this a while ago and waited through support for a week to get it activated from Gamers Gate when I accidentally got the wrong version. Messed around in it for about 5 minutes and have been since distracted. PC

Sam and Max: Season 2- Got through episode 1 and a bit into episode 2. The flow of ep 2 is going kinda crappy so I feel like I'm really slugging through it. PC

STALKER: Call of Pripyat- Awesome game and I keep just loading it up every now and then now that I've actually made it to Pripyat and keep just wandering around for a bit putting off progression. PC

I've got a bunch more games I have to play and am also trying to balance the various multiplayer games I'm still playing regularly.
Sleep need is dumb. Stupid body.
