How good / interesting is the story really in SMT: Devil Survivor?

I have to say I've been doing a dance with this game as to whether to dive into it or not. I generally like Strat RPGs for mechanics. It's why I prefer them over regular JRPGs. I can ignore an awful story (FFTA2) or an ok story (FFTA) in order to play my beloved genre. I prefer a great story (Tactics Ogre or Fire Emblem), but I can suffer a bad story for good mechanics. And I prefer the DS, so I'm sticking there. I know there are amazing Strat RPGs on the PSP side of things, but for now I have enough to play on the DS and not enough time. That said, here is the crux of the matter.

I've begun to wander from Dragon Quest IX, which actually has good stories in the cities, interesting vignettes, and turned my attention to SMT: Devil Survivor. It seems like it has that interesting hybrid of Anime with an interesting story, cool mechanics and great music and style. So I want to know from people who played it if it's as fun as it looks. More importantly, is the story worth it? I've heard the game is very hard. This is one of those situations where I can suffer a punishing mechanic if the story is good and interesting. So I want to know how much there is to that. If the story is overhyped, as I mentioned earlier I'm happy to play other SRPGs where the mechanics are solid and less punishing. However, this is one of those rare instances where the story has me intrigued and I'm curious if that interest is warranted.

I saw in the other thread that you were thinking of trading in DQ9 for this; why not at least finish DQ9 so you don't lose all your data?

I havent played any TRPGs lately. I put FFTA2 down a while ago. I actually just started playing DQIX this weekend, but it hasn't grabbed me yet.

That's just it. I got more into DQIX and I don't think I'm finishing it, honestly. I'm going over to FFTA2 before I "finish" DQIX. I'm done with it officially, I think. Finally.
