Stacking - new Double Fine game

We just got Costume Quest last month, an announcement for an expansion soon and now word on their new game, Stacking! IGN has a trailer:

http://www.ign.com/videos/2010/11/23...

Looks like a puzzle game based around matryoshkas - Russian stacking dolls. Smaller matryoshkas can hop inside larger ones to assume their personalities and use their abilities. Seems like it could make for some pretty clever puzzles with you stacking up several dolls to chain their abilities together.

Really love the graphics in the trailer, it looks like stop-motion animation which is fantastic.

I think this new focus for Double Fine is going to work out really well! Smaller, more focused games centered around really simple gameplay mechanics should hopefully let them focus more on the creative and fun aspects.

Sort of reminds me of Scrapland.
Looks cool.

Sounds a bit like messiah in concept.

One of these days Double Fine will remember the PC, and then I'll be able to play their games again...

...I can dream.

This looks really cool. I'm very interested to check it out, it seems like an innovative concept.

I'm definitely not going to pass on an opportunity to control a farting matryoshka doll.

Absolutely!

Between this, ReZ HD, and Castle Crashers, I might have to finally get a 360.

sweet

Looks fantastic. I love smaller games like this.

It's coming out Feb. 8th and looks awesome. Playstation Blog has a short video and writeup. Sounds like the game is all about exploration and experimentation which is great. Puzzles have several different possible solutions and they reset when complete so you can try out something different.

Can't wait! Will be picking this up for sure.

I know I'll love this game but I'm trying to focus on my backlog and limit my purchases. Regretfully, will wait for a price drop.

Matryoshka dolls, steampunk aesthetic... sounds familiar, but I can't quite put my finger on it...

Seriously though, it looks great, and if Doublefine would start making PC games again I would totally play it. Le sigh.

*look out into the distance*
*touch my chin*
*fade into memory*

Looks like Playstation Plus subscribers will be getting Stacking for free when it releases on Feb 8th. Didn't see that coming!

Can't wait.

Wow, that's a deal. Now if they'd just implement a policy that tells me that if I stop paying, I get to keep the games I bought, we'd have a deal.

Just a reminder that this is out today. I'm going to download the trial version now.

Oooh. I really like the look of this game. Gameplay is a little strange, but the art is great.

You do get to keep the games you bought on sale but any games offered free you don't get to keep once your subscription ends than you are unable to play them.

I'm downloading the demo. Looks promising.

Played through the opening level and it's every bit as charming and fun as I hoped. Not entirely sure how long the game will be - I'm guessing a bit on the short side - but there's lots to collect. Also like how the puzzles have multiple solutions and they immediately reset when done so you can try to find the other solutions if you want, or you can just continue on with the game. I finished up the first puzzle then spent the rest of my time trying to collect all the unique characters. There's just something about collect-a-tons that I love!

Art direction is fantastic, love the diorama vibe and the silent movie cutscenes. It's worth talking to the NPCs as some of them have really funny stuff to say.

So yeah, looks like Double Fine may have another winner in my book. We'll see if it keeps it up for the whole game.

I ran through the demo pretty quickly, tried some of the alternate solutions, found some collectables and it said I already had 5% of the game completed. I get the feeling this is a really short game. I like the look and the fact that it's different but I think I can wait for it to hit 800 MS points or below.

Most of the 8-8.5 reviews scored the game as such simply because it was indeed short. Four levels, just like Costume Quest, but with some replay value.

Played through the first level, and really like it so far. The things the different dolls do are funny.

I'm wondering if this is one of those where you have to come back later to get some collectibles or if everything can be gotten in one go before moving on to the next area. They suggest that you can come back later, so I'm guessing it's the former.

I posted this in the XBLA thread but I'll repost here:

Something about the tightness of the camera to the action or the depth of field, I don't know, but playing for even 30 minutes gives me a crushing migraine headache.

It's the same sort of nauseous headache I get from certain FPSers like COD:MW.

It didn't bother me too much while playing with the demo but once I sank a little more time into it I had to quit out. I revisited the game a few hours later and it crushed my head again.

Beat the first Zeppelin and I'm really starting to dig the multiple solutions. 1 or 2 are ones that I get easily and the others I have to work for in a delightful adventure game kinda way, except no fish + face = random solution crap.

Having a lot of fun with this so far. The extra challenges and collectibles make this quite the addiction.

Wow, really? I'll have to mention to my friend who has migraine Issues. Depth of field tends to do that to her, but I never thought this game would have enough of a DOF effect to mess with her. Warning sent.
