Lori's death in childbirth, while not wholly unlikely (who knows what the story behind that is, there are few possible explanations), really bothered me both as a public health resident and as a woman and mother. For the past century, women have been told that they can't give birth alone and they've been shepherded into hospitals, strapped to beds and injected with various hormones to speed up the process in order to accommodate the doctor's schedule. And Lori's death comforted the whole "oh yeah, I would've totally died if I hadn't been in a hospital" sentiment that is widespread and not always justified (C-sections are becoming more and more frequent because of epidural analgesia and induction, according to some studies). Lori's death compounds those views and that really, really bugs me. Especially because (comic spoilers below):

Spoiler:

Lori gives birth to a healthy baby girl in the comic with a successful VBAC (vaginal birth after a C-section)

My wife would have died during childbirth with our son (he would have died as well) had she not been at a hospital so Lori passing away during childbirth kind of hit home. Plus, I was on board with any method of removing her from the show.

Another person coughed, he then shuffled off to the next cell. And she fell asleep so quickly that she didn't hear the shuffling? The gurgling sounds next door? She was jumping at curtains minutes earlier, and now those suspicious sounds completely escape her notice? Didn't seem right.

This bothers me too. The walkers are so noisy and no one seems to hear them. Ever.

A few other things are bugging me and really showcasing the amateurish writing.

  • Prison full of people and they allow the walkers to crowd up that much by the fence? To the point where they're rocking the fence back and forth? No one had obviously been out there for a few days given no mention by anyone of the rat corpses. So if no one is monitoring the fences, Rick and Carl are the farmers, Michonne/Darryl are always doing runs, and Maggie/Glen are always on watch, what's everyone else doing?
  • Why have they never fortified the fences? Why was no wood fastened to the outside of the fence so nothing could see in?
  • What was the point of killing three pigs to lure the walkers 50 yards from the fence? Kill one and drop it so they get the taste of blood, then lightly injure one and let it squeal and run away. It would be the Piggy Pied Piper.

Because plot and conflict.

THIS. I am always complaining about the writing decisions they make on this show and I just can't stop watching/enjoying it.

Fortify the fences? Why has a dry moat and two level palisade with the middle filled with rubble not yet been constructed?
I am similarly unimpressed by the gate construct. Someone needs to study their ancient and medieval siege craft.

Added emphasis with bolded text. Like I said, there are case in which modern medicine does serve its purpose (I didn't want to throw fancy schmancy terms, but you brought this on yourself ): placenta praevia, eclampsia, retroplacental haematoma... But modern medicine has also led to some downsides, and the precautionary approach can be a double edge sword at times (it's how we used to systematically remove all appendixes when in fact a simple course of intravenous antibiotics can sometimes suffice, for example).

This times a thousand!! They were smart enough to have that whole set up around the gate, why not extend it?

Brizahd wrote:

So why don't they bring more vehicles back when they go out? Instead of using logs they could park a car or truck against the fence to help reinforce it. Helps with security and also good by having them around for spare parts.

When Rick told Darryl to get the truck, I assumed they were going to park it against the fence.

Well, dang. Now that you brought it up, that's bugging me as well.

Getting eaten by walkers, of course!!!

She wasn't dead when she went in the cell. But it's not like this virus is taking its sweet time. There was a trail of blood from the cell to the burn spot, so I assumed someone dragged her body. I'm sure Tyreese is going to assume someone offed her before she turned, but I don't think that is a fair assumption.

There was a blood stain on the pillow of his girlfriend's cell, so it's a fair assumption that they were killed before they died. The virus does make ones blood burst from them, so it could also have just been from them dying on their own. My theory is that the person feeding the rats to the walkers is working for the Governor to destabilize the prison so the Governor can finally get his revenge. Just opening the gates didn't work the first time it was tried, so he wants them weakened first. He wants them demoralized and ready to turn on each other. It's possible the insider was the one that burned the sick people and they left the gas can out there to imply it was Rick that burned them, as it's certainly going to cause internal strife. It's also possible that someone else did it as a mercy killing (remember when they described how people died from the disease? That did not sound like a pleasant way to die) or to protect the rest of the group from whatever they had.

I do have to say that their lack of security is ridiculous. Why on earth would they feel safe enough to start leaving all their doors completely open with no one keeping an eye on the interior of the cell blocks? You would think they'd have enough experience to know that they ought to have one or two people from each block stay awake as a night watch.

I think complacency is key here. 6-7 months of no big issues... I think everyone would be getting lax in their duties.

Fortifying the outer fence is dangerous and noisy... might not have been worth it because I don't think the zombies had been bunching up until recently.

Do any of you watch the talking dead?

My wife had a good comment on their preview for next week.

Spoiler:

7500 zombies can easily take down that fence and get them out of the prison.

For those who read the comics... I'm only 80 or so in.

Spoiler:

The guys going to washington have been cast, so I assume they will be coming in this season and help the group out after the prison is destroyed.

Yeah, I was mostly yelling at them for being stupid. I get why they were stupid.
I watch via Amazon's season pass, so I don't get the Talking Dead or a teaser for the next episode.

I understood where you were coming from but I just didn't think the mouth-breathing writers of The Walking Dead were trying (or skilled enough) to subtly support hospital birthing via killing off Lori in that way. Considering that in such a world there must be a constant feeling of fear and nervousness and malnutrition for individuals never mind a pregnant mother, I would think the risks associated with childbirth would shoot up dramatically. I'm sure as a skilled professional you must know the damage a poor state of mental health, depression, anxiety, and malnutrition can wreak on a pregnant mother.

Anyhow, Maggie and Glenn are doing a crappy job in the guard tower (too much boinking), not seeing a person with a flashlight sticking rats in the fence.

This too. How does one not see - repeatedly - a flashlight in the night in a pitch black rural area of Georgia where there is no longer residual lighting from far off towns/street lights. Considering how many rat corpses were piled someone is doing this regularly. How are they avoiding zombies? Those hordes are not wandering off at dusk to find a bed to sleep on, leaving that exact spot of the fence unmolested. They're staying right where they were, attracted by the rat corpses just out of reach on the other side of the fence. All signs point to an inside job. The only way someone could place rats on a regular basis at the same spot of the fence is to do it from the inside; too many zombies to do it from the outside quietly.

Speculation?

Spoiler:

I think it's the military dude they picked up this season or Tyrese's girlfriend. Something with her doesn't sit right with me. I had considered maybe Michonne, in an effort to get the group moving again towards Macon (where I'm guessing she's from) but I've rethought that after seeing her with Baby Kickass.

The rats were definitely being fed to the walkers by someone inside the prison. Whoever it was was shown sticking the rat through the fence. PRG was saying that Maggie and Glenn are doing a bad job because they haven't noticed anyone walking from the prison to the fence, not that someone was sneaking into the prison every night to put rats inside the fences. I got the impression those rats were all fed to the walkers in a single night, not that they've been feeding them nightly for awhile. I think they mentioned that recently the number of walkers that have been finding the prison has gone up, and it's been more than the crew that "clears" the fences can keep up with.

Spoiler:

I think the rats is just a new opportunity that's presented itself to the insider, so it's not necessary that the insider is their newest arrival, although things still point to the medic because he's the only real new character we've been introduced to. Tyreese‎'s girlfriend is dead now, so I doubt it was her.
I think Michonne was looking at Macon because that's where she planned on going to go hunt for the Governor next. They didn't really announce it, but they implied that it was what she was doing when she came back in the first episode. Daryl and Tyreese's sister's group were scouting/scavenging for supplies, while Michonne was hunting the Governor and doing long range scouting.

Hate to harp on cars again but it seems to me an easy solution to the zombies would be a big vehicle. Maybe outfitted with sharp edges. Eventually gas would run out but unit then you could just run over the zombies. I mean if you can crush a skull by stepping on it a tire would work.

It's totally the messed up little girl feeding Nick.

Glad the see the WD Crew still have enough of a gasoline surplus Rick can use some for lighting a symbolic fire, as that's way more dramatic than using any of those hay bales that are no longer feeding pigs as kindling.

I hate being That Guy, but the gas use on the show has always stood out for me.

There are abandoned cars and gas stations everywhere. Everyone's breath smells like gasoline at this point, though.

If I'm sucking gas from three-years (?) atrophied cars every day to keep a fleet of gas guzzlers going, when I hand over the can, I'm saying "Now, listen up, motherf*cker, the first ten tanks I tried had too much condensation, and I nearly busted an O-Ring trying to inhale what turned out to be 15 gallons of sludge before I got this and ended up drinking a fifth of it. Everything I've eaten lately tastes like Techron. So, when I give you this, you sure as sh*t better use it for something important. I don't want to hear you used it to ferry corpses across a small field, or to take a little jaunt down to the Sev, or to punctuate a stark visual representation of your internal struggle. This better not end up dumped on a metaphor. In fact, gimme that back, I don't know why we aren't all on horses and bikes anyway. Promotional considerations by Hyundai can take a flying liplock."

As far as I can tell, it's been over a year. How long before the gas starts to go bad?

Why haven't they built a windmill to recharge their batteries?

I saw it done with wooden fence planks, copper pipe, bicycle and an alternator.

Sure, you've seen it done, but all in all the group doesn't have a kind of mechanical skillset. If we wanted to lay it out, the group's skillset includes

- Medical (through Herschel, the new military medic, and one other dude?)
- Tactical (through Rick, and just plain experience over 3-4 years)
- Construction/fortification (probably more through the Woodbury survivors)
- Agriculture (Herschel again, along with the Woodbury survivors)

I just came up with it but hey... things.

Gas doesn't go bad... It is very stable. If it gets salt in it there could be issues... but water just falls to the bottom... (oil and water don't mix)

Windmills to charge things require some decent levels of electrical knowledge. Your average person either wouldn't get anything to work, or would cause the battery to explode. It isn't the pieces that are the issue it's getting the circuit right.

The Woodbury survivors were mostly elderly and children. All the able bodied people were part of the attack on the prison and were killed by the Governor when he had his tantrum. There might have been a couple others besides Tyreese and his sister that stayed behind, but not many. Any new 17-60 year old in the group is probably someone they found while scavenging.

Amoebic wrote:

I had considered that but then I wondered if she would realize that people are on fence duty to kill zombies close by and bringing Nick close with rats would just result in his getting a sharpened cane in the brain.

A car alternator contains a full charging circuit for a 12 volt battery.

By my count, it's been about two years. Rick had been in a coma for two or three months, add a couple until the farm then nine months for Lori's pregnancy and now little Judith seems to be at least three or four months. Could be longer, but that's how I figure it.

But just think about, guys!! They don't have to fill up the Hyundai as often because it gets GREAT gas mileage!!!!

Touché walking dead writers, touché.

They should get steam roller and flatten them. Or get some of those portable holes from acme and throw them in front of the fence.

On a different note Talking Dead was pretty good with the crazy stuff Manson was saying.

You might be right, FSeven, I'm not sure and don't remember. Judith does seem to hold her head up fairly well, even though she doesn't seem to be sitting up on her own, so that's why my brain went to "at least 3-4 months", and was thinking "less than 6 months." Guess I wasn't too far off the mark, although I should know better than to go by the appearance and abilities of babies. We all know how TV and movies portray newborns! XD

I actually saw the Carol thing coming because it fits her, in a way. I'm willing to bet Rick will try and hush the whole thing. At this stage, they really can't afford turning on each other, and Tyrese flying into a rage and killing people helps no one.
