Houston Area S&T October 23rd!

Pages

Since it's been eons since my first (and last) S&T I thought I'd float this for us H-town area goodjers. Anyone interested in being a part of the S&T heard round the world?

Edit:

Here is the info:

Meet up at Fat Ogre Comics and Games in The Woodlands from 4pm to 8pm (or later, if folks desire) Saturday, October 23rd.

Google map marker

Proposed events:
Rock Band
Board/card/tabletop Games
- Last night on Earth
- Save Dr. Lucky
- Frag
- Munchkin
- GURPS
- D&D 4th ed. (If someone wants to DM a short ~1hr session we can pre-roll characters)
- Any board games someone else might want to bring?
Xbawks action (Carcasonne? Cataan?)
Some form of live action hookup to wave at the webcam for the S&T 'round the world folks.

I have reserved the room, but I'd appreciate if attendees could bring a few bucks to defray costs. $10 or $15 per person. We'll be chipping in for pizza as well. Bring your own beverages! There is a Wal-Mart about 1/8th of a mile down the street, so you can stop there for refreshments if needed.

Pharacon
Mean Red Worms +1

Possible:
Fedaykin98
Copingsaw
Grumpicus
Propagandalf

In general, I'm always up for a good S&T. Have to check with the wife and baby these days. What do you have in mind?

It would be nice to get together somewhere and actually do some gaming. I've got Last Night on Earth + the (unopened) expansion, Munchkin, Frag, Spooks, WoW board game, D&D 4th ed, two Xboxes, a PS3, Rock Band, Guitar Hero World Tour...

Fat Ogre Comics & Games has a private party room I can inquire about if travel to The Woodlands is acceptable. Maybe some Rock Band action? We'd have to get more bodies involved.

Failing any of that (or anyone else coming up with a brilliant idea), maybe a hang out at BW3 or something. I'm open to suggestions at this point, but hearing about Rabbitcon has made me want to put something like that together without the need for airfare, car rental, and hotel.

Tangentially, why is Buffalo Wild Wings called BW3? Shouldn't it be BW2?

I will be following this thread. It's been a while since I've been to a Houston S&T. Not sure if I've just missed them or if there haven't been any. I must admit I don't spend a lot of time browsing the Everything Else forum anymore.

I will admit that the possibility of a road trip intrigues me.

I don't believe there have been any since maybe 2006 when some of us met up at Hooters and they went to see...eh...some western. Starts with an "A."

I'm in. Any of the above mentioned options work for me.

Just got home from work and spoke to the Mrs. She's fine with us hosting the event at our house, so that's an option now. We live just a tad north of Conroe. I know that's a long way for most folks, but it wouldn't cost anything extra for venue rental, and our hours wouldn't be constrained by the facility.

The wife also mentioned Main Event as an alternate. By extension that could mean Jillian's as well, I guess. Is that place even still open?

Any other suggestions?

Edit: Mrs. Hoppa is also open to putting something together fun for the wives/girlfriends and kids as well, so it would be a more family friendly event.

This makes me so happy! Once the details are finalized be sure to add it to the map : D
I love the notion of all of us getting together on the same day and celebrating the excellence that is GWJ.

First you snap up all the good offensive line free agents and now you humiliate me in my own thread? I demand satisfaction! Marshmallow guns at dawn, sir!

I'll be hitting Fat Ogre Comics and Games this afternoon to pick up my order. I'll ask them about their party room while I'm there.

Still no other ideas? Anyone have a preference?

OK, found a contact email for them and they responded back fairly quickly.

Our V.I.O. (Very Important Ogre) room is perfect for any event. The room is completely sound-proof, has a 50 Inch plasma flat screen mounted on the wall. An incredible sound system with surround sound, Blue-Ray player, DVD player. Wii video game console with rock band, Comcast cable TV box, lecture stage and seating for up to thirty people.
The normal rate is $15 an hour with a minimum of 4 hours. A great price considering the amenities we offer.
However since we recently had our V.I.O. grand opening, we are offering you an “Introductory rate” of only $10 an hour with a 4 hour minimum. Anything over 4 hours is $8 per person. We have drinks and snacks available for your gathering as well for only $1 each. We can start a “Tab” for you when you get here and you can just pay for all the food at once before you leave.
So please, let us know the date and time of your gathering, as well as any special requests you may have for Movies, Music, Tables etc.
We look forward to hosting your event!

I'll need to get some more info from them (will they let us bring our own consoles? Tables? Beer? Food?). Is extra time 8$ per hour person or just 8$ period? I'll find out tonight and post here with more info.

Sadly I'll not make it to Houston. Home game on the 23rd and I"ll be running a tailgate.

This is cool. I expect to hear some awesome stuff coming out of the Lone Star State. Nay, I demand it!

OK, the extra 8$ is just a flat rate for time after the initial 4 hours. Outside food is allowed, and they're going to get back to me about the ability to bring our own adult beverages. They had originally looked into getting licensed to serve alcohol, but they are close to a school so zoning prevented them.

They have two Xboxes in the store, but we can hook other consoles up in the party room and we can bring tables if we need them.

So, at this point is anyone interested in meeting up at Fat Ogre in The Woodlands on October 23rd?

That's cool by me. It saves on the cleanup hassles when people are over at your house. Nothing like breaking down hastily thrown together LAN combined with trash pickup and furniture disassembly.

Subscribe. If anyone from Austin is going, let me know. No promises; I'm also considering HedgeCon.

I'm working on sowing the seeds with my wife for me to make the trip down. Then it's just a matter of working out the logistics.

Aww yeah! We need more Aggies!

Updated

How about 3pm to 9pm and maybe hit up a pub for drinks after?

This is probably a thing I could do. I'll have to see what comes up closer to the date, but definitely maybe.

I live 4 and 1/2 hours away in Northeast TX (near the AR state line) and would love to make this. Have to run it by the wife though, maybe we can go see her brother or something.

edit: won't be able to make it, the date runs against Interpol at Verizon Theater on the 29th. We won't have the money to do both sadly, as we're both on fixed incomes.

I got approval from the missus, so pencil me in.

I have applied for spousal permission and received word that approval is likely.

Any more thoughts as to activities? Rock Band is always a good time, but we should do a variety of things.

Also - I'm down with comic stores, but places that let you consume adult beverages are even awesomer. That may not work this time, I understand. Just putting it out there because a brother likes his margaritas.

I need to contact the owner again, since he has not gotten back with me on a BYOB policy.

I'm way open for suggestions on activities. Bocce ball, cigar tasting, harumphing - I'm down for whatever. If you've got ideas, bring it on. We can set up a small LAN as well, I'm sure, so maybe Red Dead Redemption or...? TF2? I don't do a lot of multiplayer...what would be fun?

Someone start shouting random things!

PORN!

Oh. Wait.

For PC I always say Unreal Tournament 2004. Lots of gametypes, maps...easy on computers. Great for CTF.

Looks like there's another spot slightly closer to Houston for future reference. Just something to keep in mind for future H-town S&Ts.

Certainly worth a look, Hemi.
