Penguin's Ohio S&T 10-23-10 (Reach, Mario Kart, Rock Band 2, Board Games, and Beer)

<--- Check out the tag.

And that's just the personal collection. I have a fairly big list of games owned by friends to pull from.

I've probably got a friend coming with me now, so I don't know now if we'll hit a (m/h)otel Friday night or just leave Saturday morning. Once I find out who's riding with me for sure, we can figure it out.

I'm not 100% sure, yet. But, if you left Saturday morning I could be interested in a carpool. I've got a concert to attend Friday night and will be staying overnight in Detroit, so I can't get home until the morning/early-afternoon Saturday. Don't plan your trip around me, though, just if it happens to work out.

I've got the 23rd off work, for sure, but I'm still making sure all my other ducks are in a row, before committing 100%.

Twilight Imperium

I've always wanted to play this... It'd probably take up most of the party though, wouldn't it.

It depends on how early we start and how late we go.

Look, 8 player TI is just about the single most epic board game experience you can have. If you guys want to play it, I can get a few people here in the morning and you guys can get a game in and only miss a few hours of the actual event. I'm sure I can supply at least 2-3 people who would want to play. just with them and you, that's a game, L&L.

Any other takers for a game of TI during this thing? depending on when you guys want to do it, we can start it early or start it around 1 AM.

Hell yeah.

I have no idea but I want to play BORD GAMS

Also, how does everyone feel about having a video game swap? My thoughts were just to bring a bunch of games you don't want anymore, we throw them in a pile, and people take home what they want. Maybe we'll make a randomized list to pick and call it off at some point in the night...and if you take a game out you donate $5 to Child's Play?

That's a good idea, yeah. I'll put that on the list.

Why don't you post that in the big S&T thread?

I'd be okay with not involving Child's Play if that's too complicated, as well. I just know I have a bunch of games that wouldn't fetch $10 on half.com or whatnot, that I'm not going to play ever again and I don't want taking up space. It's either give them to other goodjers or give away to Goodwill (which I'll do with whatever games are leftover).

Oh no, not too complicated at all to involve child's play. I think that's perfect and an idea we can do at all the parties.

We pool games together and $5 buys you a ticket, once we have everyone's $, we can pull tickets to determine what order people can grab a game in. Easy-peasy.

This is not something I want to force on any of the S&T's. Each S&T should do whatever they feel like doing and are capable of handling.

What if there's only 5 games I want in there and my ticket gets pulled 9th? Just playing devil's advocate...

Right but that encourages you to buy more tickets.

And it isn't so much that we're dictating what the other S&Ts can do, it's that we're tossing ideas out there for them to do if they want. It's a good idea and the more of those we have, the more money we can raise.

Depends on the values of the games. If they're all $19.99 or less and used and are being donated, then I don't like this idea. If the games are set to be newer ones, then yeah, maybe.

Who wouldn't want to pay $5 for a chance to win my copy of NHL 2K5 for PS2?

Oily,

Thanks for the invite. I strongly recommend next time you see if you could turn 30 on a weekend other then when I have to chaperon the youth retreat from church. Soooo sadly I will not be able to make it this year. Which is a total bummer because you live kinda close to my brother-in-law and I could totally sell it to Mrs. Mono as a "look you can see your brother while I do this..." But instead I will be not sleeping in a cabin making sure our teenage boys don't sneak off and get frisky with the girls... Have a good time (well as good a time as can be had with out Mono.)

=) sorry you can't come, mono.

Ok, so we talked a little bit about raising money for Child's Play last night so I want your opinions on some ideas:

1.) Tournaments that cost $5 to get into but pay back half to the winner
2.) Poker, probably $10 to get in with a $5 buy back. %40 goes to the winner, 2nd place gets their money back.
3.) Passing the hat for Child's Play
4.) Everyone brings some games to donate and we sell raffle tickets for people to go through the pile and pick something they want. This would go until we were out of tickets or out of games people want. Those games would be PS3, 360, and Wii only. Or I guess steam vouchers if people want to buy someone else a game too.
5.) Same as #1 except the buy in is $10. Why? We'll do an Omeganaut-like challenge like PAX. 4 games that will all be surprises to people and things may just get a bit wacky.

What do you guys think?

If we do run tournaments, I don't want them to be a vehicle for earning money so I'd rather not tell people what games they will be (unless popular opinion says otherwise). But we would decide how many of those tournaments would happen in advance.

I think I like poker combined with passing the hat. I don't like the used games idea, myself. Tournaments, I don't know, will we have enough people to make that worthwhile?

Pyro, this is well out of hand at this point. Check out the planning spreadsheet, I have 27 people confirmed and I'm still waiting on at least another 10. And this is before you guys make a bigger push on the call.

So... yeah, I think we can get a tournament or two together. Even if they're only 8 people per.

Would anyone be interested in a heroic/legendary playthrough of Reach for the story? I've heard it's not like the books, but I still like the Halo lore and would enjoy a co-op run unspoiled.

And added my info to the spreadsheet.

I will make the run with you. I've done Heroic already; a Legendary with all our fellow Goodjers around in person would be AWESOME!

I've done it already but I can help out if you want. Just let me know when, I promise not to talk over the cut scenes (probably).

Possible change in venue coming (I think we've probably outgrown my house at this point).

Details when I get them, check back tomorrow.

To clarify: I'm still hosting and it will still be in the Cleveland area but I'm looking at a place that should be able to handle our needs a bit better.

How will this affect those that were going to crash on your floor?

Actually, things should be a lot better =)

Times will change for it very slightly but moving venues means we'll be able to go past 10am on Sunday so people looking to sleep can actually... uh, sleep.

This will be nothing but positive for us. The only downside is at the moment, we're losing internet access. Not the end of the world since we're more than be maxed out for players for just about anything we want to play because we have so many people but that could put a damper on things if we're supposed to link all the parties together. I'm going to see about getting internet for us.

It's a pretty sweet new venue though. Again, details tomorrow.

Ok, it's official: Venue change.

We got too big for my house (which is awesome). So:

1651 lee rd
Cleveland, OH 44118

MAP

Is the new venue. It's a karate dojo. Yup. I don't think we'll be able to get the mats out but... anyway, please don't kick each other.

What this means is I don't have to kick everyone out 10AM on Sunday so still bring sleeping stuff but now there is a much better chance you can actually use it!

The problem is that we're going to have to start at 4 now (there's a class there until 3). I'll still be there setting up, so if you are going to come early, let me know and we'll make arrangements for lunch and stuff. I think we have access to half the place before that class is done so we can have people there early. To shorten a ramble: you guys commuting just found yourselves another hour to drive.

There is plenty of parking on the street (which we would have had to do at my place anyway) a bar across the street and a starbucks 300 feet away. Also plenty of places to eat within walking distance. It's pretty perfect. And we'll have drinks there, anyway.

The only drawback is that we won't have internet. Now, I'd like to bring my modem, if it turns out there's a cable line in the place, we should be able to get internet since I'm in the Cleveland area. Let's hope so, anyway.

Remember folks, sign up on the planning spreadsheet so we can keep track of stuff.

Wireless?

If not, those of us with Androids/jailbroken iPhones can use our phones to provide limited access for IRC or whatnot.

So do you think setup will be a problem? I mean we're pushing it back an hour, then we have to setup all the TVs, consoles, tables, etc. Just thought I'd bring it up, I have no idea what setup you're planning here.

I do know if there's anything to make the setup easier that we can prepare beforehand let us know, we should do everything we can so that we're dealing with as little setup as possible.

I appreciate it, Pyroman, thanks.

I think I have it under control. I have a retinue of locals I'll be employing to get things transported and set up, I think we should be fine.

We'll have access to the downstairs of the place all day and I'm going to start moving stuff in around 1 (in case I have to make a couple of trips). So when that class ends, we should be able to just cart things upstairs, throw in some tables and call it a party. That's the plan, anyway.

If anyone is bringing anything significantly sized (like say, a TV), feel free to let me know and we'll make arrangements for you to come early. I plan on getting together and having lunch with everyone that will be in the area and helping set up around noon.

I have a box of cat5/6 cable for networking so that should be a snap. I think the hardest problem will be getting all the wiis networked (which can be finicky with an internet connecting) but no one really seems interested in too much Karting and I still don't know if we're going to hit the minimum 4 copies and 16 wiimotes, so that might not end up happening. /shrug. We'll see.

And again, if anyone feels comfortable bringing a TV, it would be appreciated. The more TVs we have, the more stuff we can have running concurrently. We're sitting at 6 right now, which is 1 per 360. That' pretty awesome right there. Ideally, I'd like something besides Halo running at the same time as Reach (as I anticipate a good deal of teh h4l0z happening the time) But again, we'll see.

We've hit the minimum for systems so we certainly won't be wanting for stuff to do.

Big post, so I split it up so people would read it.

2 more things:

1.) Someone volunteered to bring 360 Rock Band. I'm willing to leave my PS3 stuff at home if we want to move to all 360s. Crispy is bringing a 360 without a HDD, so if someone has a big collection of songs, then just bring the HDD and hopefully your equipment. The only reason I was sticking with ps3 was because, at the time, we were in my house and I didn't have to move anything. Now that it's somewhere else, that will save me a trip to Cleveland if I don't have to move my kit =)

2.) Bring whatever additional games you want to play. We're going to be rocking system link pretty hard, it wouldn't hurt to let everyone know what one another is bringing. I added a tab to the spreadsheet. Share what you're bringing. If it's just games, let it be known =)

2.5.) I also added Board Games to the sheet, the caveat there is I will only be bringing what people want to play, so if you want me to bring something on the list, but an X in the "requested" box or something. Moving that many games would be a chore so if no one has any interest, I won't bring it. And don't feel bad if we don't end up getting to one of the games, if you're interested, say so.
