You had me until this. I really liked Other M.

It would have worked better if you had said, "Darksiders is to Zelda as Shadow Complex is to Metroid." Pretty graphics, more gore, bland gameplay.

This keeps on coming to mind when people say "Darksiders is just Zelda" and yet "ZOMG SHADOW COMPLEX IS AMAZING!"

I think both forms of gameplay are really excellent, and I'd love to see more companies interpreting the design philosophy behind both of them. As it is, Darksiders is more interesting than your typical hack and slash for implementing Zelda-esque design elements without relying on the exact same pattern of dungeon crawl.

...wait, what are we talking about again?

Don't buy Civ 5. You know you have that Civ 4 collection from the steam sale that you haven't even touched (I'm sort of saying this to myself as well).

Guys, can you talk me out of buying Portal?

Why??

I mean, I can see why you wouldn't want to wander in the multi-year morass that is Civ (V), but whyever would you not want to have a great, short game?

Get Portal. Stop being weird. Come back with something that actually merits disabling.

Yonder wrote:

Wow, that's a tough one. Garion and Scratched probably have the right of it here -- it used to be free, and it'll probably be free again at some time in the future.

That's a hard game to really criticize on its own terms, though.

By the way, I was dead serious about my Civ 5 criticisms. It's nice and all, but the AI is simply too brain-dead to be a challenge. The combat is much better than Civ4, but the computer players are so inept that going all-out military as soon as you have a few cities online is an absolutely sure win. They do a dismal job of defending themselves, and can't attack for sh*t.

It really and truly is kind of a pointless game until they fix that. If they develop competent AI, the improved combat will make it worth the purchase, but in the interim, stick with Civ4.

You get what you pay for....

Nope, that one doesn't work here.

Cake is overrated.

Here's one: I'm about 4 hours or so into The Witcher and am often frustrated with the game mechanics and save system but like the story. Give me reasons not to spend more time on it.

The titties aren't good CGI.

The mechanics continue to suck and the story gets a bit more drawn out after you get into the city. I stopped at 10 hours or so and never looked back.

I heard that Portal wasn't really that good, but people liked it because of the memes and the song in the credits.

Scratched wrote:

I'd place a small bet that Portal 1 will be included with Portal 2. Does enabling another purchase cancel out the disabling?

Ah, but you CAN'T buy Portal 2 yet. When it comes out, then we'll just have to find a way to disable that purchase. Until then, I'd call it fair game as motivation to not buy something else.

You're doing it wrong again!

...In all seriousness, I didn't really play enough Darksiders to fairly judge-- although given that I sent it back to Gamefly only a few hours in, obviously it didn't impress me too much-- but I think I can fairly say that I thought Shadow Complex was overrated. The weird 2D / 3D hybrid gunplay struck me as unintuitive, and where other people saw "impressive for an XBLA game" in the graphics, I just saw "bland with no coherent art direction." It wasn't a terrible game, but there are so many better Metroidvanias out there.

Also the Orson Scott Card novel it's tied into is trash. Pure and utter and absolute trash, and this is coming from someone who pored over Ender's Game back in the day.

You quit right before the tipping point. Chapter 3 picks up well, and from Chapter 4 it becomes one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had.

As for the save system. 'F5' And I love the mechanics, they aren't perfect but once you get into the rhythm of combat enemies melt in a satisfying way. And I like making potions.

And my mother finished it 5 times. You don't want to be more lame than my mother.

You guys suck at this. Stop with the "In all serious" enabling garbage and trash these titles, accurate or not.

Go outside and play.

YOU WANT A 3D CASTLEVANIA WITH KOJIMA'S OVER-BLOWN RIDICULOUS WRITING?! WHAT DISABLING IS THERE TO DO!

Oh I'm sorry, I forgot I left the caps lock key on. Mah bad.

I've been having this uncharacteristic urge to maybe pick up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Never played one before, but in playing the Red Dead Redemption multi-player, I'm intrigued by the leveling up of weapons and attaining that oh-so-cool gold version of said weaponry. Apparently, you can do the same in COD, and I kinda thought....

Screaming fourteen year olds over XBOX Live

No. I just disabled myself.

Starcraft II is imbalanced. It won't be fixed for months- dangerously close to the next expansion. This will cause a new set of imbalances that will be fixed before the next expansion which will break the balance again. Total patch time to perfection: 10 years. After 10 years your reaction times will have slowed enough to render you irrelevant.

Also the writing kinda blows.

I sense this thread can be thrown off rails really easily. Just have the wrong balance between funny and rational and stuff starts getting serious to some, ridiculous to others.

If enabling comes from a common pool of love where gamers bathe topless, splashing goodness and kindness to each other, disabling kinda comes from the opposite of that. It might be something closer to a coprophage's dream scene, with the wrong kind of yuck being splashed around as a leather clad maniac with a clown nose inside his mouth uses a chainsaw as a violin.

Gave me an excuse to use the right click -> search highlighted text on Google function in Chrome.

Also, that's disgusting.

But Kojima didn't write it. Kojima Productions just lended some help on the project and Kojima produced it, but he didn't really have anything to do with it other than doing whatever it is producers do.

I am horrible at this disabling thing.

Imagine how awesome it will be five months from now and how you will wonder how you ever had any fun without all those new features. Why you wasted your time back in September 2010. The time you wasted carefully edging out over ledge after ledge to make one bridge, only to have Notch add crouching which would have saved you all that work and frustrating falling off of ledges, for example.

Picture all your hard work, thousands of torches lighting up dozens of caves and awesome sky castles, all the work you've put in these past few weeks, and having to trash it and start all over again because save games won't be compatible.

I'm amazed you can tolerate even that much of the blatant misogyny in that game. The sheer hatred for women in that game rises off it like a stench.

I need disabling from this topic. I just blew 20 minutes reading through it with only this to say:

Civ5 won't be as pretty as Civ6. Wait for that. Even better, Civ7....or Civ15, that one will be great. It will never end or bring anything much more interesting to it. Its been done 5 times and its time to move on. And none of these sim-like games will ever be as interesting as SimEarth was. Wish someone would remake that.

3D pixels are lame.

You never finished 'x' other game that you bought full price (FFXIII for me)
