Halo: Reach

Ok, I will necro this thread since the Beta hits in a few days. Anybody interested in putting together a Goodjer Night for the duration of the Beta?

Count me in. I will be going through the thread later and friending people who are interested.

I wasn't too impressed visually. It's still Halo, it's still awesome, but I guess I was expecting quite a jump visually with Reach. It ran smooth, had some nice effects and seemed crisper (yes, all technical terms!) so that was a benefit.

I can't wait to play a little more and get a better feel for all the changes, that was just my quick and dirty initial impression.

Ah, enemy within melee range. Hit B. Hit B. HIT B. Gah!!!! (Oh, there you are right bumper)

Yeah I definitely changed it back to the old method pretty much right away. Getting used to switching nades with "X" is far easier than remembering that B no longer whacks dudes upside the head.

I'm really impressed with the beta, it feels like Halo 3, but more... solid some how. The controls are as tight as ever and I find myself looking for interesting ways to navigate the maps, especially now that you can sprint or jetpack!

A damn fine upgrade to the existing system, and should be a good replacement for Halo 3 when it finally ships.

The transition from deployables to personal equipment is nice. The immediate tactical ramifications are easier to visualize than the old Halo 3 thrown stuff.

Agreed. My only problem is that Boxer has gotten more uncomfortable as I'm holding the left bumper down more.

So I think that I have played a dozen or so games, and I am enjoying it. I am also remembering why I never played Halo 3 multiplayer too much. Currently, because it has only been about 24 hours since the beta went live, sometimes you get put in a match with people who are newbies, sometimes you get put in a match with people who are masters and multiplayer.

Given that I haven't played any multiplayer in a long, long time, getting paired with the really, really good people is nasty. And usually ends up with me having a kill differential in the very low negative numbers, and that just isn't fun.

Every now and then, though, I do get flashes of brilliance. Very, very rarely though.

Same here. I like it, but it also reminds me of why I've spent about 50 hours+ more playing BFBC2.

Join me for beta fun! The last two nights have been great with full Goodjer teams. My only complaint thus far is the same ol' one from previous iterations: public verbal abuse. Come on guys, join me and help solve this issue.

I've been jumping in to this when I can, but since Goodjerland is asleep when I do I've just been soloing the free-for-all playlists. I'd absolutely love to get in to some team stuff with Goodjers on the weekend though, particularly if we can get some of the Spartans vs. Elites modes happening.

I'm downloading the beta as I type this. Definitely down to, as the Halo fans say, "pwn some n00bs."

*sigh* Sometimes I wish my favorite game series was less popular...at least with the etiquettely challenged, because we don't ALLLLL say that.

I gotta say, I really love the changes in Reach. The gameplay is much more team focused, with the armor abilities complementing each other really well. An armor lock point man with a cloaked partner can wreak havok on any lone wolf.

No we don't all say that, but we were definitely doing that last night. Lots of fun, thanks to those who joined up.

Halo is fun like a case of cheap beer. Friend requests sent.

Definitely playing when I get back from work tonight, around 9:45PM'ish (CST). Anybody game?

I'm playing some ODST tonight, but I should be on Reach after.

I'll be on in a bit. Ready to kill!

Halo Reach Beta thread on page 3... You've failed me GWJ...

Great games last night guys. Oh what a difference playing in a friendly environment makes!

Looking forward to moar!

Bungie posted some changes they have already made and addressed some concerns:

Some highlights:

Lastly, and all new for Reach, we have a new type of ban called a Quitter Ban. This is a relatively soft ban, so we will be using it quite aggressively, activating after only a handful of quits and lasting a rather long time. What does it do? A player with a Quitter Ban will be temporarily unable to re-enter Matchmaking for 15-30 minutes following any further quits.

Whoa, what’s up with those reticles, Candland? Kinda hard to make out, aren’t they?

Yup, if you were wondering if you need to calibrate your television set you can stop fiddling with the levers and knobs, it’s not just you. But it’s not Candland, either. When I asked him about the thin and transparent optics on display Candland threw design straight under the bus.

Turns out our UI team didn’t have much to do with the current reticles in question. Instead, they’re what Candland calls, “Designer Art.” They're just placeholder.

Fixed for fall.

They need to fix that "letting victims of betrayals ban the betrayer" s***, because sometimes the vic is also a perp. And by "sometimes," I mean that dude last night had it coming, and that he got to be the one to ban me is dumb.

Other than that, though, last night was an absolute blast.

In one of the first 1 flag CTF game I've played, I was escorting this guy with the flag who wouldn't get tired of dropping the flag, picking up the flag, dropping the flag, picking up the flag, all the way to home base, only made better by the announcer insisting on commenting it every f*cking time. I was patient. I let him capture the damn flag before swinging my trusty Assault Riffle behind his stupid head, twice. To death.

BETRAYAL!? I DESERVED A GOD DAMN MEDAL!

The announcer problem is fixed for retail. Beta success!

I'm not a halo pro, but I'm fairly certain that flag running is mush faster than just carrying the flag. Right? I mean it's been a common tactic since Halo 2 at least.

I sent out some friend request might be getting on this evening if no one is on BC2.

From what I've heard/seen the effect of this "technique" has been seriously lessened with each game. I miss being able to flag toss to teammates, but this juggling method got annoying so I'm glad Bungie eliminated its usefulness. People are just doing it still since it's ingrained in them.

My case was, The guy teamkilled Inigo--just flat-out doing it for fun--so I shotgunned him in the face about two seconds later. I can't comprehend the mentality of someone who would kick me in that situation. Of course, I can't comprehend the mentality of people who intentionally teamkill anyway.

I <3 needler.

I always have loved the needler. I love using the weapons no one likes to great effect against them, and hearing them b*tch and moan about it.

It's amazing to read the Bungie feedback about the Beta and upcoming changes for the fall release. DICE had me believing that developers were incapable of keeping their players updated. Looking forward to the continuing with the beta as well as the full game in the fall!

It's been almost two weeks and the Beta is still going strong. I figure now's a good time to bump this thread and see what all of you have been thinking about the changes Bungie made to the otherwise aging series? I'm personally in love with the new level of thinking involved with the armor abilities and the "feel" of the core gameplay feels more grounded and similar to Halo 1. The biggest problem for me now is having to deal with going back to "vanilla" Halo 3 until the Fall!

Thoughts?

Play ODST instead.

Also a good suggestion. I've logged so many hours of Firefight with my roommates you wouldn't believe. That's good medicine.

Seriously though, I like what I am seeing; as long as they do tweak a few things.
