Soccer Gaming Catch-All

I don't think I time my headers. Or do I? I have no recollection ;] Sometimes during goalkicks and other long punts you can try to win a better postion by using super cancel (R1+R2, I think that sometimes R2 alone should also work), mainly by getting in front of opponent with tall player. As for headers in penalty area: almost everything depends on quality of delivery. Try to experiment with using R2. (BTW: early cross button is great for some through balls)

I've played two seasons with Toulouse on 4 stars/professional and it was getting to easy towards the end. I narrowly lost in CL semi-final to Real Madrid after dominating the game. As soon as you have few star players and understand tactics you use well you can beat anyone, even on Top Player, if you keep focused. But then I've tried to play few games with international teams like Russia or Serbia and didn't fare too well because I didn't knew my players and strengths of formations those teams used. I like that about this games because it shows that tactical menus are there for reasons.

I'm with UC here. Scoring from headers is all about the delivery and .1% about execution. You really have to see the player moving correctly for space when you decide to cross the ball. When finally crossing it is pivotal that you:

1) Use the correct passing technique ie. double tapping for a low trajectory but fast high cross, triple tapping for a low ball or simply tapping for a regular cross.
2) Direct the ball correctly. Which means that if the player is on the far side of the area and more close to the post than the middle of the penalty box, then press up and to the left (if attacking to the left, otherwise right)

With Real Madrid however I have experienced that awesome players seem to win more headers than other players.

I've heard about R2 being good for positioning after the cross is sent, but I have never had much luck with it. I have experienced in PES2010 that it can be a good idea to switch players if a cross is sent in where there is more than one of your teammates. It seems to heighten your chances of winning the ball. I can't fully confirm this though.

You need to make very small adjustments when using R2 so it can be problematic. It's most useful during goal kicks where you have a lot of time to reposition yourself.

PES2010 PS3: Played 3-4 matches online today. I lost all of them. I partly blame myself. But mostly I blame the game.

Most games are played at less than normal gamespeed because of poor internet connection speeds. Its very annoying and dificult to play a game, when you have to anticipate your moves.

One game against a person from Greece was so bad I constantly dribbled the ball of the pitch. No reaction what-so-ever.

So my recommendation is: Play against people you know have a good connection. Which means stay clear of players from southern/eastern europe if you are in western europe.

An update on the post above:

I've been playing on wireless and experiencing a lot of lag. So I went searching the internet for a remedy and apparently it helps to put your PS3 on a cabled connection instead. Play tested it once and had my first lag free game. What a joy.

So the above post is pretty much all lies

So, I'm playing my Newcastle FM10, Joe Hart just allowed a goal off a freekick by Tomasz Kuzczak... from Kuzczak's own half of centre. The next match he allows a goal from the byline as he was way off his line... again. I think I need a new goaltender, he's just not going to cut it in the Champion's League.

Oh, irony...

I played a very fun 6 v 6 indoor soccer game on the 360 last night. It's an indie game called SFG Soccer made by Stir Fry Games. It's not PES or FIFA, but it is sort of mindless fun with a minor RPG element in the vein of NSS. It is 400 points on XBL and the Windows version is $13 USD? Not sure what makes the Windows version eight dollars better?

Anyway I am purchasing the 360 version today.

I played the demo to that and enjoyed it, reminded me a bit of Mario Soccer just minus the powers or the super shots. It was fun and if I ever have a spare 400 points I might get it. I think it would be fun with a group of mates, quick, winner stays on games.

It reminds me a bit of Sensible Soccer 2006 edition.

After playing it some more it reminds me of Lego Soccer Mania without the powerups, ice, Lego guys, etc.

A note about hilariously bad luck:

My second best midfielder got injured in my current FM game, a strained groin. After a month, he comes back, and in his first reserve game, strains his groin again. I wait another month, finally, belatedly, he's back to return to full training. There's a reserve game coming up, and I do want to work him into the first team again, but slowly.

He fractures his wrist.

Poor, poor boy.

He's not Man City's Michael Johnson, by any chance ?

Maybe you should ask the relevant FA if he can play in bubblewrap.

Here's a ginormous surprise...there's going to be a FIFA World Cup game.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/ea...

One can only hope that it will be better than the disgraceful WC 2006 game, which is the only game that I've ever sold within a week of buying it. And I felt guilty towards the person I sold it to.

Euro '08 was a nice little taste of the changes in store for FIFA 08, but yeah, pish-tosh, don't need it, et cetera. I'd rather they made it DLC for FIFA 10 (stadiums, teams, et cetera).

A note, given that I spent so much time talking about PES and FIFA, but FM 10 really does deserve some kudos this year, especially the match engine, the graphics for which are really, really nice. I've seen backheels, bicycle kicks, diving headers, players sprinting off the bench to celebrate winners, and just now, a striker sticking out his leg to redirect a long shot into the corner of the net. They really did a great job this year, and somehow manage to continue doing a good job, despite how incredibly difficult it is to create a game this ambitious in less than a year.

I'm still playing with 2d view.
You might have noticed that I don't use steam these days since I don't have a lot of time to invest into buying, installing and playing games, but I got to play FM a lot on my roommate's PC. I think I've played something like two seasons with Toulouse, winning two Ligue trophies and getting into CL final.
I'm still unsure if I'm yay or nay on this year edition. It's all getting repetetive after some time and new tactics system isn't helping. I think I'm tired of current game mechanics after playing it more than any game ever and I will have to wait until hey decide to completely revamp some aspects of the game.

God, I love those "FM Moments".

I took over a Wycombe, with them eleven points off of safety, with 11 to play. And by god, thanks to some good play and some great Loans (Rhys Murphy and Luc Castaignos, especially), it all came down to a final-day match with Gillingham, who were three points ahead of us, so only a win will do.

2-0 Wycombe, goals from Murphy and Castaignos. Both teams finish on 41 points (both teams are also 9-14-23), but our superior goal difference (-27 to -30) keeps us up. Barely. Not to say I wasn't sweating bullets those last 15 minutes. Holy crud that was an exhilarating two and a half months.

Good sir, you are a masochist!

In recent years I've been playing mostly top division teams, but I had one or two relegation battles in third divisions too. But the most gripping moments certainly have been with taking Cardiff into playoffs back in 2008. I've been completely destroying Wolves for 70 minutes playing in rainstorm when all of a sudden someone kicked a long ball upfield, my goalie got forward to catch it, it slipped out of his hands and rolled into the net. (I know it doesn't sound even a bit dramatic but you'd have to see it. It was the howler extraordinare, the howler of howlers) Beauty of the game, eh.

I'm having a fun time playing a Leeds file in Football Manager, especially since the last patch came out. Regens are a lot like they were in FM07, so it's a lot easier to find talent after the real-life players retired. Managed to win the title in 2016 because of a ridiculous striker I purchased from Notthenham Forest back in 2014. When he played my team was incredible but without him we played to the level of a mid-table side.

“It was time for PES to transform, and PES 2011 represents the most ambitious redesign in the series’ history,” commented Jon Murphy. "Total freedom was the priority and all-new animation a must. PES 2011 does both"

This is good, looks like they've re-imagined all underlying mechanics instead of tweaking elements: all-new passing, changes to game speed and dynamics (with stamina gauge), right-stick tricks, higher difficulty, new AI for defenders.

FM2010 is on sale for 50% off and free to play on Steam this weekend (at least in the US).

Preaching to Pred, episode 178462:

Defence, Seabass notes, "has changed massively". Using the dash button to close down and press the player with the ball has been replaced by a three-pronged system using the X button (it's all PS3 in Japan) and directional input.

Hold X while directing the stick towards your goal to hold up play, a relatively passive option that makes it difficult for the attacker to pass you. The second option is simply to hold X and release the stick entirely. This stops your player and, if timed correctly, will halt the advance of the guy charging at you with the ball.

Finally, moving the stick towards the opponent while holding X results in a more aggressive effort to retrieve the ball. This is familiar to PES, but with greater risk attached, says Seabass - if the attacker anticipates your lunge he can pass you more easily.

So....I'm having the Football itch going now real bad, what's the meanest, baddest, bestest of football games out there? PES 2010 reviews are not very encouraging, but I really dislike EA's fifa, is it really that much better than the latest pes?

I wouldn't trust me if I were you, but yes, PES 2010 is much improved from previous ones. However, if you don't care about graphics, run PES 6. It has huge mode scene, there are some great current squad & kits updates out there. For me it's definitely best football game of the last decade.

I've reinstalled 2010 after six months of inactivity and I'm surprised at how much I like it. I'm not claiming that it's better than FIFA but: I just don't get FIFA - I can play it casually, but never gonna get proper feel for controls and my 360 has died some time ago anyways.

So playing one or two games in PES while taking break from studying is perfect right now. What sold me on this game again was
1) picking middle-table club (Lazio)
2) playing it on five stars
3) using all assisted settings: auto subs and lineup, CPU changes in tactics etc. so game mixes it up for me constantly, which is important, cause when you play with the same set of players and tactic it gets dull super-fast

Colour me intrigued!

I re-installed this, which I had from darker days, though I went looking for kit updates and got really confused, updating seems really difficult-hard core modding. Anyhow, I agree on it being superb, even playing with a keyboard it's a treat for a football lover.

That all looks very, very nice. But I looked over my PES 10 criticisms, and I think they're still valid. Konami still hasn't made a Next-Gen PES title yet. And I still don't know if they've addressed my AI concerns (which they've improved, at least), tweaked the difficulty levels (again, sliders. Sweet jesus sliders), or dealt with this...

Prederick wrote:

Moreover, there's still my eternal question of what the hell actually makes a good defender in the game. If my (admittedly limited) experience is any indication, it's still like the very first PES title I ever bought, way back in 2002/3, when I won the master league several times, never upgrading from the random generics they gave me with because defending isn't actually that deep. I'm beginning to think my "Paul Scholes Test" idea should become a mandate for games. Which is that if Paul Scholes can regularly and effectively make tackles without fouling/drawing a card, your ratings/defense gameplay is 16 kinds of broken.

I'm dead serious about the "Paul Scholes" test. If someone as notoriously defense-shy as Ronaldinho is defending from the front and snapping into tackles like some kind of deranged combination of Dirk Kuyt and Gennaro Gattuso, your game is wrong.

Of course, hope springs eternal, but I think i'm putting both titles on my GameFly list first.

We haven't discussed Football Manager in a while.

My favorite FM player just retired. He needed 1 more league goal to reach 450 with the club, but wouldn't reconsider his retirement. To be fair, he was pretty crappy at the age of 37. I want to hire him on as my assman but the board keep blocking me from firing my current guy.

Yeah, that's one of the things that still annoys me with board interactions. They'll block a move, that if you discussed it with them in real life they'd okay. At least it's an iterative process and eventually FM board AI will get more realistic (hopefully)
