Starcraft II Catch-All

Looks fantastic.

The only thing I'm slightly worried about is:

soundtrack and dialog rerecorded and rejuvenated

Since Brood War has some of the best music and audio design of all time.

I'm not super worried about the OST since I think the original composers still work at Blizzard. But the dialogue re-recording would imply new VA for sure.

Wow, I did not see it turning out like this. Looks completely sprite based still, just higher def. And LAN play.

Starcraft Remastered is now a thing. Curiously, it's not running in the SC2 engine by the looks of it.

That's really cool!

I think the bulk of the remaster will be caster-side and online. It has to be pretty much exactly like the 1998 game in terms of gameplay, so that just leaves a graphical upgrade, which is kind of weird to pursue at this point - unless they're going extra on the tools you can include to present and make the game exciting for spectators.

One of the things being patched into the classic client, and therefore will probably be a major component of the remaster, is a proper match observer mode.

On the downside not allowing you to control more than 12 units at a time still being a thing will keep the game significantly more mechanically complicated to play for the vast majority of people. People don't even like learning to use keyboard hotkeys for Starcraft 2. They're not suddenly going to want to do it even more for a remastered version of Brood War.

I'm happy about the remaster and will buy it and likely replay the entire game but for the majority it's not going to make Starcraft any more accessible or playable. Just prettier.

How about a Warcraft 1-3 remaster?

In all fairness, you don't need to have that much control over Starcraft units to do well in the campaigns. They're really easy. As far as the lower skill levels are concerned, the only ability added by being able to select everything in your army is the ability to attack-move everything. It's kind of an improvement, I suppose, if your macro doesn't suck.

I agree with thin_j. I think this is squarely aimed at eSports (BW having a bit of a resurgance in the last year) and people curious about the game but couldn't get past the age of the graphics. I might double-dip just to support it if the price is reasonable but I don't think it'll get an extensive amount of play from me.

War 3 is a possibility. They've previously ruled out anything older due to "lack of fun/quality".

Lack of fun? Have they played Warcraft 2 Tides of War?

Yeah WC would be brutal to go back too. It had some pathway mechanics I would not like to relive. I would play a game of WC2 for nostalgia sake, but WC3 does everything better. I haven't tried it, but I imagine WC3 could get up and running on modern PC's, though it could certainly benefit from some visual upgrades.

Please no. Don't bring it up here.

I hate that game so very much.

Sorry, but I can't resist. Why do you hate WarCraft III? I strongly prefer StarCraft, but I loved both WarCraft III's single player campaign and multiplayer. The single player campaign had a fantastic story and the RPG elements added a little more variety to the missions beyond the standard "build base, destroy enemy base" objectives of most RTS campaigns. And as for the multiplayer, I loved the focus on microing a small squad of units as opposed to the macro heavy focus of StarCraft.

I would love a re-master of WC3. But unlike some of the others here I would like them to put in quality of life interface improvements as well. You could toggle them off, of course, but for those of us that aren't esporting it would be spectacular.

I'd like a Warcraft 2 remake. They wouldn't need to adhere too much to the old mechanics because there's no real esports demand afaik, a spiritual update rather than exact mechanical clone would be perfect. I don't think there's much to adapt in Warcraft 1 and whether you like or hate 3 there is no real need to update it imo.

Im really surprised they did tsk this with the SC remaster. "Classic Mode" for eSports and a different mode with some SC2 style interface enhancements to help grow interest in the casual market.

I wouldn't mind if they remade Warcraft 1-3 in Starcraft 2's engine. I just would love to play through the campaigns again. Brings back so much good memories as a younger version of myself.

Wonder if the observer mode they're adding to Brood War will have all the production queue stuff in it that's in SC2. There's an argument to be made that one thing that helps Brood War as a viewable competitive event is that the viewers and commentators don't always know exactly what's about to come out of a production structure or zerg egg. Adds some tension for viewers in certain situations. Makes for some surprises.

1.18 is out for the original game (which is now officially free). If you're on Windows 7 you'll want to grab this for sure since it finally fixes the infamous rainbow color effect that plagued many of Blizzard's pre-Diablo II titles due to changes MS made to DirectDraw (the game now uses OpenGL). Other than it's mostly a maintenance release and judging by the menus doing a little bit of prep work for the remaster since some of the fonts look larger and the battle.net classic login experience is a bit revamped.

EDIT: For anyone interested, Warcraft III also received a big compatibility upgrade earlier this month

Oh man. I'm gonna have to fire this up. I wonder if they fixed the problem my friends and I always had where we couldn't see each other's games even though we were on the same server.

The original Starcraft has been updated to 1.18 and is now completely free, as in free beer.

Download it here

If you're looking for custom games, "Use Map Settings", there's an active Discord group here.

If you simply want all the most popular UMS maps download this ZIP and extract it to your SC maps folder.

All Starcraft maps are available on scmaps.net but the site seems to be hammered right now.

In case the slightly blurry look of the new patch bothers anyone else, you just need to disable Bilinear Filtering in the Video options once you get into a map.

The voices sound good but I'm not feeling the Terran 1 remake at all. It sounds tinny and lacks the umph and bass of the original. I probably sound like a CS 1.6 fan who is mad the aim has changed .2 or something but just not feeling it.

Original:

Heck, the remastered Terran 1 in Heart of the Swarm sounds better.

I haven't listened to the ingame music in Starcraft in like a decade. I play my own music over it. *shrug*

StarCraft: Remastered is coming out on August 14th for the low price of $15.

I think they were still charging $10 for the original + BW before they made it free so the pricing makes some sense. I expect they'll nuke support for the old version at some point and only maintain the remaster going forward.

Hmm, the Remaster purchase page says "Requires StarCraft® Anthology". I'm thinking they still use a bunch of the assets and code from the original. Maybe.

Oh that's clever. Free for the base experience but if you have to pay cash for the upgraded visuals. That would also explain how they're maintaining network compatibility between the two versions.

I liked the "show me the money!" easter egg in the commercial thingy
