Rise of Flight Catch-All : The return of the Red Baron.

So Rise of Flight: Iron Cross edition has dropped, and i finally took the dive in with the 14 day trial.

I'm so glad I did, there hasn't been a flight sim that has nailed the feeling of flight quite like this. The graphics are gorgeous and there's something extremely gratifying about keeping these kites up in the sky. The developer has lifted the online only DRM, and is constantly adding major features. It's a far cry from the buggy mess it was at launch. Here's a few vids.

Looking forward to another lawn dart sim night!

Oy, that looks good. May have to check it out, since they've removed the DRM.

Edit: looks like they haven't fully removed it, as it still requires a single online activation. Might be tolerable if it's persistent, looking into it.

Nice. I'm going to have to try this out.

... And my copy was waiting for me on my porch when I got home! Yay!

I can't believe how much this game reminds me of Red Baron. According to the box my system just meets minimum requirements (Quad core 2.4ghz) but it runs great with everything on high (GTX 280).

There's tons of medals you can acquire, and from the look of the campaign they are building, it's going to have a very cool dynamic campaign in the near future.

Campaign update is out today! Even cooler is that the demo is now a limited full-version of the game with 2 planes and full features. Anyone interested in early aviation should check this out. The engine is absolutely amazing and they really nailed the feeling of flight. Going to spend some time with the campaign this evening and report back.

Tagging for interest

A quick dogfight set to some rather unusually appropriate music.

Just a heads up that Amazon has this for $9.99. It's come a long way from its rather rocky beginnings, and if I had a more decent PC I'd be spending a ton of time flying it.

I usually prefer my WWI fighters to have Snoopy in them, but that's nice.

I had my eye on this game when it released, but was put off for a long time by it being somewhere north of $45. Then when it went free to play and added a Red Baron-style dynamic career mode I could resist no longer.

I absolutely adore this game - it looks gorgeous - and the style of combat where most dogfighting is done at about 65 miles per hour and a range of 35 yards is brililant.

Dropping some of my good habits to learn to fly rudder-focused kites made out of canvas and hope took a while, but I found it very rewarding. Months later I still struggle to hit my target, because massively obstructed vision + very unstable gun platform + one machine gun isn't a very lethal combination, but this is by far my favourite flight sim.

Especially when I pull my own butt out of the fire in stuff like this wonderfully low altitude spin recovery.

How low?

Yes, my tyres are lower than the grass.

Awesome pic Bismarck. Going to these WWI planes from WWII has been quite the experience, they bleed speed so fast and yet in a dive you can hit top speed in a matter of seconds.

Yes - these days corner speed is about the maximum rate of turn. In 1917 corner speed was all about whether or not your wings will fall off. And the Sopwith Triplane has a lot of wings.

From this week's multi fun I want to present to you World War One's luckiest man.

Someone gifted me the ICE version, and I've been playing around a bit. Nice change from DCS A-10.

Going to hop in some of the multiplay servers, seems like they run persistant campaigns and such.

Anyone playing this? I can't get the game to see my joystick. I know that the stick works, it calibrates outside the game just fine. But the game only wants to use mouse and keyboard. I can't find anywhere to force it to use the joystick, as I expect in most games. Very frustrating, any advice welcome.

Figured it out. It was detecting my joystick as joystick 1, but the default setup uses joystick 0. So I had to find every reference to joystick 0 in the control section, reset it using my joystick so it was joystick 1, then apply and save the file under a new name so I can use it after game updates (which can reset the input file).

So if you get this problem, just reassign all the joystick settings and you'll be okay.

I've had this game in my cart twice now while it's been 50% off at Steam this week, but I just can't pull the trigger.

Trying to decide between this and Wings over Flanders Fields, or perhaps neither for the moment.

While the flight model and graphics look fantastic in RoF, I've been reading that the campaign is better in WoFF.

In both cases, the pricing is a factor as well. RoF gets really expensive with the add-on packs. WoFF is $60, plus I'd need to get Microsoft's Combat Simulator 3. I just don't usually spend that much money on a game anymore.

For those interested in Rise of Flight IndieGala has a crazy deal where you pay a minimum $3.99 for Rise of Flight plus the bomber DLC, a package on steam that would normally set you back around 70 bucks. It's going up to 6 bucks tomorrow but even at that price it's a crazy good deal.

Yeah, I'm sure glad that I didn't pull the trigger on that Steam sale a while back. Even on sale those two alone would have cost about $40. Crazy good deal at $4. I bought mine this afternoon.

Yep, no brainer. I have the base game.. and it's great.

IndieGala just added another DLC pack to the download. Get it while the gettin's good!

I tried some multiplayer last night, it's actually really well fleshed out, you can fly a recon plane and take pictures for your artillery spotters, bomb targets, or just fly a fighter. Your actions determine plane availability as well as situational awareness. Your Barrage Balloons will fire off flares if an enemy plane gets near, so it's a good idea to protect them.

Question about the DLC for this. I got the Indie Gala bundle and redeemed my keys. Does the DLC just show up in the game?

Also, any good getting started guides? I fired it up and messed around a little but could not figure out how to actually fly without crashing. Joystick preferred? Would rather not try to dig up my old joystick but I will if needed.

Joystick is definitely preferred. The training campaign is a good introduction to it, but there's also good guides found here.

Activate the keys in steam and you'll unlock the planes in your account.

If you have a webcam I'd recommend trying out FacetrackNOIR as well. Headtracking makes the game much better.

So servers are actively being hammered with new accounts, making logins a little tricky today. I was able to get this screenshot of my HP-400 bomber's front turret weapon replacement: a 57mm recoilless rifle! A great deal gets even better. And there is one more mystery title left in the deal. I wonder if the last one will be more RoF DLC. It was a steal with just the base game and one DLC.

Been flying this and having fun.

Anyone interested in a GWJ Furball night?

Rise of Thread...

Now that I have a new machine, I've finally gotten around to giving this a try. And just my luck, but the DLC packs are on sale now for 70% off on Steam. I can pretty much crank the details way up and still not get below 70FPS, so everything runs butter smooth.

As for gameplay, I've only messed around with quick missions for about an hour now, but I still can't kill anything.

Then my son gave it a try and promptly shot down a plane in about five minutes.

I can really see myself getting into this, though.
