Take a Break from Summer Fun, Play More Pile Games

Pages

It's that time of year again. Kids are out of school. The pool or the beach certainly seems appealing on a hot summer's day. You know what's a good chaser to a sunburn? Recuperating on your couch, in the air conditioning, while playing some games you never managed to finish.

Now if I can just fight off the even stronger urge to take a nap on said couch...

A quick reminder, in order to be considered "Pile of Shame" the game needs to be at least three months old. Otherwise, it's just a new game you haven't gotten to playing yet.

Let's get on to the games!

This month's Pick of the Pile is

[size=30][b]Dragon Age: Origins

I'm gonna carry over Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts from last month.

Ok, I am going bold -
Oblivion, Elder Scrolls on 360.

Oh, crap... I didn't finish any games from last month. Damn it!

Just Persona 3 FES for me. 50 hours in and still not over... jeez... well, I am liking it, though, eheh.

Lego Batman, 360. Only 10 levels to go! But then all the levels again to pick up goodies.

I'm really proud that I finished two games last month (Wolverine and Braid). I think I'll jump back into Dragon Age once Red Dead Redemption gets its hooks out of me...

I'm wussing out and sticking with knocking out some more of the games in the TellTale pack. I tend to declare games and then magically never play them, so I'm going to set the bar low this month. I'm playing some other games, but I don't want to jinx myself.

I just finished Torchlight this past weekend, so I'm trying to figure out what to play next. My pile is ample.

I'll be playing through Chains (Mac). I may get to other things, but Alan Wake and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are quite demanding of my attention.

Posting here usually dooms me to not finish anything, but I'm going to work on The Witcher, now that I can finally get it to play.

Okay, we'll have to roll Fear 2 over from last month. Dangit. I'm within striking distance, though!

I've made the mistake of arranging my pile alphabetically during a tidy up last month...

This month is brought to us by the letter 'B'.

Mark me down for Batman - Arkham Asylum, and The Bourne Conspiracy please. I'll be playing them on the 360. I managed to get through my nominated two last month, lets see if I can keep up the good work.

I wouldn't mind some time on the beach, especially being as down here we're currently bracing for storms!?!? Crazy topsy turvy world we live in.

I'm devoting myself to one project for the summer - Final Fantasy VII.

I've started this game many times, and my longest attempt was my first one was back in 1999 - unfortunately, that was over a long weekend on a friend's PS1, and so I could never keep the save. I've tried to do it over and over several times - on PC, on PSP - but always ran into substantial bugs that halted my progress.

This is it. This is where it finally goes down. Got it on PS1 classics on my PS3 and am making my way through Midgar as we speak.

FF7, you are my Everest.

Dragon Age on 360 is on my pile, but there's no chance whatsoever I'm going to finish it this month.

Good luck. I almost melted my memory card on this. I was chasing down the ultimate weapons when our house got broken into, and they stole everything games related. This included my memory cards, and I had 'just' clocked over 100 hours on this. I've never been back to Midgar... One day, when the wounds have healed, and the scars have faded.

I wish you well...

I'm really looking forward to hearing what you think of it.

I will carry over Dead Space, again. I am slowly picking my way through, but keep getting distracted by more relaxing games.

One of those, Prince of Persia, has a new lease on life since I got my 360 controller and I am loving it, so place that on the list too please.

It's going to be hard to overturn the impressions I've developed over 10 years of multiple attempts. Right now it basically boils down to "Still not as good as Final Fantasy VI, and overrated. Give me more 2D FF!". (I could really apply that logic to all JRPGs, but that's a conversation for another time). I see hints of the interesting character development, layered plot and emotional resonance that FF7 fans love to bring up, but it's severely hampered by (what else is new) terrible localization/translation - something inexcusable for a game that's supposed to be this big a deal. (I remember VI's script making a lot more sense to me). Finally - I find the character design and art fairly bland - another thing that suffered due to the switch to 3D.

I know it sounds like I'm hating it, but I'm not. Frankly, I enjoy VII's characters, plot, and mechanics much more than I did X's, and I played that one all the way through. I've always enjoyed FF's trademark combat/advancement mechanics and huge worlds. I just can't help but compare VII to VI, and I honestly see VI (along with Chrono Trigger) as THE high point of Square's craft. I'm hoping to (re?)discover more in VII to convince me otherwise.

I am stepping off of Red Dead, and I will be plugging Darksiders into my PS3.

This month, I'm going to go with:

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (360)
Sam & Max: Season 1, Episode 1 (PC)

I've had Oblivion since I picked up a 360 in December of 2006 and have never beat it. I put about 40 hours into it early on and beat the Arena, got probably 1/4 through the main quest, and maybe 1/2 through the Fighters Guild. At that point I stopped playing for a few years and when I picked it back up I just started a new game as I had no idea what was going on.

Anyway - so I've been playing it for the past month or so and have beaten the Mages Guild and am close to finishing the Dark Brotherhood. In order to 'complete' the game this month, I'd like to beat the Thieves Guild and the Fighters Guild. At that point, I'll pretty much consider the game completed given the amount of time I'll have spent with it.

I purchased Sam & Max (along with everything else from Telltale) during the Steam Holiday Sale. I enjoyed my playthrough of Monkey Island so I'm really looking forward to getting introduced to the Sam & Max universe.

With the end of the Starcraft 2 beta, I can return to Dawn of War 2's campaign. Commence purging of aliens and/or heretics.

Jonman, i threw your name under DA:O.

List should be current.

Edit - wrapped up Strong Bad ep. 3 at lunch time. Awesome progress so far this month!

Sign me up.

Currently playing Dragon Age: Origins on the 360!

Dragon Age: Origins and Psychonauts have both carried over for me and I'd like to add Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Halo: Combat Evolved as well.

Lots of colons for me.

I'm going to finish the Penumbra Collection (PC). I'm somewhat glad Overture was average for me because Black Plague has been an improvement in most departments, especially narrative.

I'll try and finish up the Phoenix Wright (DS) saga. I'm almost done with the fourth case in Justice for All and I believe I left off on the 3rd in Trials and Tribulations. I'm really eager to move onto a new main character. I don't want to listen to a whiner anymore.

I've always wanted to complete the original Resident Evil. I bought it for the Gamecube when it came out but found myself lost at a certain point and never finished it. Likely going to be following a guide so I can skip the innate puzzles.

So that's:

Penumbra: Black Plague (PC)
Penumbra: Requiem (PC)
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice For All (DS)
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations (DS)
Resident Evil (GC)

Put me down for Lego Batman, please!

I haven't played anything but PES in the last week or so... gotta get to the pile.

I should put down ME2, but instead watching The Pacific yesterday got me wanting to play some Company of Heroes. So I installed the Gold edition I got a while back during a D2D sale. I've beaten the vanilla campaign but not the Opposing Fronts expansion campaign. So put me down for CoH and/or Opposing Fronts.

Ok - so it looks like the new releases have slowed again for a while (LOT of stuff on the 25th though :O )
Hopefully that gap'll give me the chance to cover a Pile game or two.

Since i've already played one mediocre 'RPG' in the last few days (Alpha Protocol), I might as well try another that I've had sitting on the shelf unopened for a good couple of months after picking it up for basically nothing.

Put me down for Rise of the Argonauts.

Carrying over Trine, which I finished today, and Defense Grid.

Also, I plan to finish F.E.A.R. and F.E.A.R.2, both on the PC.

Pure again this month for me. Playing on the 360.

Chains is fun, and then there's this:

The random distribution of the bubbles makes this level ridiculously difficult, even on Easy. Actually, word on the street is that this level may be harder on Easy than it is on Normal. Go figure.

Edit: And it is. I cleared it, but I'll admit that I only managed it because both flippers got stuck and weren't able to clear bubbles anymore. Still, a crappy level in an otherwise decent game.
