The only way I think 6v6 would be tolerable if it was restricted to koth maps and possibly all-melee.

A summer of melee taunt fortress. Does it get any better than that?

Trains and low gravity?

For shame sir. For shame.

I'm interested, but not for 6v6.

Okay, i think everyone that asked has been invited to the steam group... maybe.

I'm in.

I vote for a highly complex drafting system invented by someone who is not me.

Mex I'm in definitely. Will be up and running this weekend.

One thing I would suggest (which may have been suggested already, I'm a filthy skimmer) is to put more than 12 people on a team (assuming 12v12). There's no way every person is going to make every match, especially in the summer, and having any fewer than 12 people is going to be a serious disadvantage for that team. If more than 12 show up, then someone can sit for a match (or a round) and folks can take turns sitting out.

Or have 15 people on a team for 9v9s but then we're looking at 60 people for 4 teams. Doable, but hard.

I was thinking along the lines of just putting everyone that's "maybe" into one big pool of alternates. Hopefully a few will be available any given night, and you can just PM one and see if they can join. Or maybe set up something where any non-drafted "randoms" from another team can sub in if they're online and willing. That way you don't keep people waiting around and twiddling their thumbs.

Sure, throw me on the list. I need a Steam TF2 group invite too.

I'm interested. However, Steam may have other ideas about my ability to engage in tournament play, or even just to play recreationally for more than 10 minutes without booting me to the menu with a VAC connectivity error.

Apparently this is happening to a lot of people lately. This is what Valve says to do:

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

Please exit Steam and go to the folder called C:\Program Files\Steam\ (this is the default location for a Steam installation - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it).

Delete all of the files in this folder except:

The \Steamapps\ folder and Steam.exe (this file is listed as an application and features the black and white Steam logo)

Restart your computer.

Then, launch Steam.exe from within the Steam installation folder, and not from a pre-existing shortcut.

With Steam running, re-test the original issue.

Note: This process will not affect your currently installed games.

I did a very quick (reads lazy) google for tournament organizers; seem's there's Bracket Maker.

The page looks rather bleh, I hope there's something better after the 4th result (and someone not as lazy as me to go look for it :D).

We need something to set the mood for the GWJ tourny... hmm... think I got it:

That is awesome. Reminded me of Goldeneye 64 for some reason.

You've been waiting for an opportunity to post that. I can tell.

Teams will be mostly random with some tweaking by organizers to avoid horrible teamstacking. After that, well, someone's got to lose.

Current head count stands around 70 confirmed, not counting "maybe interested".

We're pretty close to our goal of 100+, but the more the better. With 70, we have the option of:
5 teams of 12 people
7 teams of 9 people

However we still have a few days to go, so poke your friends and tell them to come register on the forums if they play TF2.

Updating first post in a few.

How do I get to the GWJ server?

Look right above your post

Just go to Steam > View > Servers > Favorites tab and right click and "Add server by IP address" and insert the number in there, then just double click to start TF2.

Regularly our pickup games start around 8-9pm. Skill level will be very varied in the pub, and in the private server it's higher.

I also forgot to request a Steam TF2 group invite please.

Really puts me in mind of Frank Klepacki's more metal-inspired songs from Command & Conquer.

Am I that transparent?

Without a firmer time schedule, I don't think I can commit right now, but I can probably be in a pool of floating alts. Once you pick your dates/times, I might be able to commit, but I can't until I see the schedule, sorry.

confirm me, please.

Thinking about it I can't 100% guarantee I'll be available for whatever time ends up being chosen, so move me to the alternates list and feel free to IM me if you need a player.

Considering this is for "fun" and not a "hard core" tournament I think putting restrictions on the classes is a bad idea. Who connects first will get first choice. The last few will be forced to pick a class they may not like. Not fun. Yes, I understand you are trying to make balanced teams but you can't force fun. It's just as harmful to a team to force someone who has never played spy to be one as it is to have the all spy team.

No one is going to be able to guarantee 100% availability even if they were under house arrest.

Throw me in the deep end of the alternate pool, please.

The Studio Rumble rules we used for the Telltale match, which Mex has proposed for the Summer League wrote:

up to 2 each of demo, medic, and engineer, and up to 4 of any other individual classes

I don't have a horse in this race, and am usually in favor of people playing whatever they want, but I actually was surprised how much I liked the class limits we used in the Telltale match. It made a huge difference on the final point of Dustbowl, which often degenerates into demo spam back and forth, with BLU trying to break through a forest of sentrys. Staats referred to it as cp_maginot_line, and I think that's pretty close to the mark (only without Belgium as a flanking option for attackers).

If a team is so uncoordinated that The Judge's scenario actually happens (someone inexperienced ends up forced to play spy), they're not going to last very long, regardless of whether there are class limits in place.

Count me in... uhm, please?

Me Me! I promise I will play until you tell me to stop!

oh god.. that sounded strange..

I'm in.
