Gran Turismo 5 Catch-All

The guys on my local forum are complaining heavily about the load times.

Basically, on the track is great, as soon as you're off the track it's a total kick in the balls. Polyphony clearly needed feature lockdown way earlier so they could polish.

I wish they took the high road (pun intended)!

Someone racing (and winning) a kart race in GT5 completely in the reverse gear! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qotsr... Not trying to flamebait or anything, but you can wonder why a racing game which claims to be 'the real racing simulator' would allow for this! Maybe the reverse goes as fast as the normal gear on a kart, but it should control horribly, the slightest steering adjustment should make you spin out...

Yeah, I've sat through some seriously long load times in between the menus. At times I just thought the game frozed or crashed. Makes me wonder what was the point of that 50 minute 10GB install.

Could be an issue with the older/fatter PS3's like my launch 60GB, because a friend with the newer slim model has not experienced any of this.

there is a delay between menus, especialy when first going to a new track, and it says "installing" when it's doing any loading. makes me wonder if it did a skeleton install and it loads content when it needs it.

I hope we see a big improvement with a new patch.

I had heard that some of the lengthy load times are caused by being online. I guess it tries to grab something from the servers, which are getting hammered right now. I tried logging out of PSN, and so far it seems to be a bit better with loading. So maybe give that a shot?

Hey guys, I'm having an issue with my driving force GT wheel hopefully someone might have a little insight.

When I first plug it in, it does the proper calibration (full left, full right, stop at center). And it is in the correct straight position. It will be like this until I start my first race. By the time I am done my first race "center" has become 30 or so degrees to the left, and it only gets worse. After a few more races "center" will be a full 90 degrees to the left. Unplugging, and replugging dont do anything. The only way I can get it to return to center is to either exit the game or restart the console. Any ideas?

Giant Bombs Quick look is... interesting. You might want to make sure your PS3 has the correct date and time set before going into the game.

carrrrrrrrs

Wow. All the talk about the menus and interface being crap wasn't even slightly exaggerated.

*Hybrids? Really?

Wow. Just... wow. They spent extra modeling time on the Prius. THE PRIUS. I'm sure the racing game community is so glad they got that in there and spent extra time getting the interior details right.

Oh.

OK, interest down. I'll check back when I see it on sale for $30. Maybe.

Too much of a backlog, and enough of Forza 3 left to play.

Some stuff looks nice, like the brake dive going into corners (although I'm not sure it's not exaggerated for a bit of effect, like Shift seemed to do). Looks pretty, but still left feeling very neutral on this game.

EDIT: Cool, head tracking, but only on SOME of the premium cars. So only half implemented. Couldn't find a video of it showing the persons head close enough to see how sensitive it is, but here's the screen:

Hmm. Lots of brake dive using the hood view in the Giantbomb video. Not much break dive in the headtracking video. Different cars of course...

Makes sense. The Audi TT would have a lot more comfortably tuned suspension with less dampening and spring rate than a Lamborghini. Plus a higher center of gravity and a shorter wheelbase.

The really long loading times and date/time message was due to server issues. I was getting the same thing until I logged out of PSN. Also, a patch for that (so you can stay online without it messing up the loading) is coming on Saturday apparently.

The load times are still longer than I'd like, but they're much more manageable than in that Quick Look. But choosing cars is a real pain and that has nothing to do with the being online bug. I think they show it in the Quick Look... you get a bunch of icons with thumbnails of the cars, but no text until you stop and hover over it for a second or two. Scrolling through the list, the images load slower than you can scroll so it's kind of bad. I have to occasionally stop and wait for it to load up all the thumbnails to see if the car I want is there or if I have to scroll some more.

The Quick Look does a good job at showing how cluttered and confusing the menus are. I've been playing for quite a bit, and I still sometimes have trouble finding what I need.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it already in this thread but...
This game actually does have damage. But you unlock it by ranking up which is dumb. In the Quick Look, there's no damage because they're just starting.

A lot of things feel unfinished or dated about this game but I like the actual driving quite a bit, and that's what matters to me. I like the driving more than Forza, but I admittedly didn't put much time in that as my 360 died (for the 3rd time) and I never bothered to get a new one.

I picked it up today. Finished six races and got my B license. It is the GT we have always known. As all the reviews have said, it is both a good and bad thing. I have been enjoying it today and will continue to play. I hope the magic lasts....I think it will.

I found myself doing things by instinct, like tapping the brakes to stabilize the weigh shift before going into a hard brake or modulating my throttle more precisely.

This is my first game using a wheel, but I find the driving portion of the game pretty well done.
AI is frustrating sometime when I see a car defying physics or refuse to give up a line and PIT me. The UI isn't the greatest, but thats GT.

You kinda have to be a gearhead/car nerd to appreciate all the cars. Do most people care about the difference between a r33 or r34 Nissan Skyline? Probably not, but to me the cars are night and day (meaning the R34 is a overweight POS )

Is anybody doing any online play? I haven't tried it yet. I'm pretty sure I'll get demolished. I'd rather it be by some goodjers than some internet pricks.

Does your driving force GT actually stay calibrated? Mine goes off center within the first race and only gets worse as the night goes on. I haven't used it since the recent update so I'm not sure if that helped it at all.

I haven't had that problem at all. I wonder if thats something you can get the warranty to take care of.

I just did the same thing last night. Add me up and we can race. I'm a total noobie but it's a blast. Maybe we could get some kind of "Goodjer Circuit" going.

Made the mistake of starting on the 'practice' courses thinking that it'd let me get my bearings. Man..those must be the expert tracks as I was not fairing well. Started through the beginner A-Spec and did a lot better, eventually getting first in all three Sunday something races. The difficulty seems to gradually increase which is great design, but I wish all of the course were available for practice.

Goodjer Circuit sounds fun. As soon as I get my PS3 back from my sister who decided to borrow it while back for the holidays I'll add you.

So, this thread died down long ago. Just thought I'd mention that GT5 Spec 2.0 will be coming out in a few days followed by some DLC. No real news on what any of this stuff is, but the game continues to evolve.

What keeps me from GT5 is the load times. Forza is tolerable, GT5 is horrendous trying to navigate those menus. So if they speed that up then I may spend more time with it.

Just fired this game back up this weekend. Yes, the load times are horrendous. Also, I hate how I'm limited in the races I can race. Right now I'm replaying old races to build up money for a car to race in the special races. 1979 or older supercar or a lightweight british car.

I like having these races but there should be a way to advance the game/levels with my main car.

Yeah, as a game it's a bit lacking, but the driving is the best on console.

Just wish the car list wasn't so absurdly large. That used car area is so annoying to navigate.

I agree. I tend to spend a lot of time in practice mode just enjoying the driving.

I sadly traded mine in long ago.
I was soooo let down, like this thread. it died for me a long time ago.

2.0 is out now, interesting timing.

No joke. Does it have head tracking? lol
