DCS: A-10C Warthog Catch-All

Big ol' preview at SimHQ

Sounds like Falcon 4.0, only with a bigger gun. Me likey.

It's GORGEOUS.

That said, can you dummy it down if you don't have the time to go to simulated flight school?

Presumably:

As with F4:AF, should you want to bypass all the "clickology" and get into the air quickly, that capability is also included.

But, if you've got getting the Viper up and running down pat or heaven forbid the Black Shark, it should be an easy transition. At least stalling won't be as big of an issue as in the F-16.

Sack up and grow a pair, Gertrude.

This does indeed look magnificent. Should nicely compliment my newfound Falcon4 addiction.

On a related note, has anyone checked out the newly released Flaming Cliffs 2 from the same company? Seems like with its more casual slant it might be a good way to start getting familiar with the A-10 in anticipation for the DCS version.

I'm hoping you can dummy it down to before they upgraded the fire control system. Nothing like flying upside-down to keep your shots on target.

WANT

Oh I'm there.

I was also going to set up a catch all for this, but was out in Montreal all day and didn't get to read the preview until..... now.

As someone who was one signature away from going to the Air Force Academy solely for want to fly F-16s, I have an issue with that statement. But even so, A-10s ARE sexy.

Hey, the gun on the A-10's so powerful that if you continuously fire it, it slows the whole freakin' plane down.

Pretty cool video of a small engagement with an A-10C called in for support. It really is so damn pretty.

I feel sorry for the poor bastards who went through all of the wankery at USAFA, went to flight school, and then were told that they've been assigned to fly a drone. Last I heard, a full third of the latest flight school graduates were handed a joystick instead of a jet.

If that happened to me, there'd be a damned Predator strike on the USAFA.

They were originally going to put two of those guns on it. Couldn't for this very reason. You could stall the plane by shooting.

The drone flying probably is a temporary assignment. I don't expect the guys will rotate out to fighter squadrons eventually.

The USAF has insane personnel policies regarding drones. Drones should be flown by nerdy video game fanatics who are used to processing information and firing while sitting in a chair in a dimly-lit air conditioned room.

Really wish I hadn't clicked on this thread. My crippling fear of complicated flight sims may just be overcome by my pure unadulterated love of the Warthog...

And there is nothing better than teh sound of that gun when it fires!

Yep! Two of those.

Sound of gun firing:

Ooooh, I love that sound And of course, it makes me think of this:

"She weighs one hundred fifty kilograms and fires two hundred dollar custom tooled cartridges at ten thousand rounds per minute. It costs $400,000 to fire this weapon for twelve seconds."

Edit to add the link. Both in case anyone missed the reference, and because the sheer awesomeness of the video demands it.

As an unabashed fan of the Warthog ever since Dynamix did their take on it, this might be the flight sim that gets me playing flight sims again.

I really wish my simming days weren't over. I have no time to spend on a beast like this.. I miss my days of Falcon 4/Jane's F/A 18.

As someone who still plays Falcon 4 I have to disagree
I'm sure the study sim aspect of it will be great but what makes Falcon 4 worth playing over and over is the dynamic campaign. It's very hard to go back to scripted missions once you've played it. They simulated an entire theatre of war with hundreds of different planes in the air at any given time, supply lines, airfields, tons of different ground units etc. If you shoot down a plane that plane actually took of from somewhere and was flying somewhere to do something. It's convey in words why it's awesome, you have to try it.

Here's an example of an AAR though, gives you an idea

Mission 16: I move to Aviano AB to do a sortie in the F-15C.
Tasking is 4xF-15C to escort 4xF-18C for a strike against Varazdin AB. My loadout is 6xAIM-7M, 2xAIM-9M.

T/O: DAY 4, 0452.

As I previously mentioned in the DAY 3 INTEL post, the NATO forces have clear air superiority by the force sliders, so frankly, my guard is down. I'm expecting a milkrun. I could not be more mistaken.

Enroute we run into an Il-78 and an Il-76. I attack the Il-78 (before the Il-76 is identified) with 2xAIM-7 for a kill. We identify the Il-76 and I start to give chase. This is difficult because our route takes us just on the fringe of an SA-10 site, so it is challenging to engage and still remain out of SAM range.

Eventually I am forced to break off and we proceed towards target at 25k, ahead and above the Hornet flight.

About 15-20nm from target I identify a flight of SU-17s on radar. As I am tracking one I give the flight a 'weapons free' command so that they can engage the SU-17s and any other bogeys over the target at will. This was a horrible mistake. What I didn't realize, what AWACS didn't call out, was a flight of 4xMiG-29A on the deck over the target. No sooner did I give the weapons free command than my entire flight dives from our perch at 25k to the deck to engage the MiG's.

I am obliged to follow even though I'm now trying to break out the SU-17s that are diving away from the friendly F-15s, F-18s that are rolling in on target, and the flight of MiGs that I still haven't seen. Keep in mind we're flighting at dawn so visibility is poor.

The next several minutes are incredibly hectic and confused as a furball erupts. -2 engages a MiG and I hear the missile shots followed by a guns kill on the MiG. The Hornets jettison their ord and go air to air and engage the bogeys as well. -3 is shortly shot down by a MiG and calls out a mayday.

At this point, having no SA whatsoever, I try to collect the flight and gain some alt. My two remaining wingmen are calling bingo fuel and fumes. I'm still carrying 4000lbs and we're about 60-80nm over the FLOT, so I'm not stressing too bad about getting myself home. I zoom climb to about 15k, still calling for a rejoin and trying to identify a MiG. AWACS is calling the MiGs at about 2k, so I can't find them without going to the deck myself. All I want to do at this point is egress.

-4 runs out of fuel and ejects. Meanwhile, the SU-17 flight that everyone had ignored bags -2. The Hornet flight is who knows where, but still sounds like they're engaged somewhere behind me.

I point my nose towards homeplate, select full AB and try to get some separation from the furball. As I'm doing this, the Hornets call out the MiGs and AWACS calls out 2 MiGs less than 10nm on my 6. I split S down, and sure enough get tally on two MiG-29s at my 12 o'clock and 10nm. I lock one hard and give him 2xAIM-7, both of which miss. The MiGs are now egressing at a 45-60 degree heading tangential to my RTB course. I can't get range on them to shoot them as the egress, but I can't evade without going back away from homeplate. I am also hamstrung to a narrow course due to SAM sites on both sides. It is a mess.

I keep an eye on radar on the two MiGs as I proceed RTB. I'm still carrying 3000lbs gas and I have about 60nm to go to get back over friendly territory.

Suddenly, my RWR goes off. I have a flight of MiG-21s now lighting me up from my high 3 o'clock. I go right to the deck and start weaving among the mountains. I'm thinking, 'ok, I'm in trouble, but I'm not too bad yet if I keep my speed up.' Then, no sooner do I think that when a second flight of 2 MiG-21's light me up from 45 degrees off my nose. Now I'm in deep.

I call on AWACS for help and get as low as I can. Everytime I get locked I pump some chaff. Meanwhile, I'm trying to hug the terrain such that I can keep a mountain between me and the bogeys. I call for help again and shortly hear a friendly flight engaging the MiG-21s. I'm thinking I'm in the clear now, and I'm about 30nm from the FLOT when my launch warning goes off. I punch chaff and flares and try to get beam to the bogey and get a mountain between us. A second launch indication and I do the same thing. The launch indication goes silent and I take up my RTB course as low as possible. I hear the friendlies calling fox shots on the MiG-21s.

Suddenly....BOOM! I'm hit, fatally. I eject.

Debrief tells me I had 2xAA-2C and 2xAA-8 shot at me.

I am, unfortunately, to spend the rest of the war as a POW.

Results: 1 F-18 KIA; 2 F-15 KIA, 1 F-15 RS, 1 F-15 MIA (me)

Mission result: FAILURE

/end derail

I can't wait for this one.

I'm a big fan of the DCS Balck Shark and I absolutely cannot wait to do a cold start on the A-10. Hmmmmm...that's what she said?

I just pee'd a little.

Wag's is an outstanding producer so this should be a very high quality sim!

Great mission description

This is why I don't play flight sims anymore. I only understood a third of that description and the only maneuver I can manage is an Immelmann. A lot has changed since the good ol' days of Falcon 1.0 and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe.

Stuff like this reminds me why I keep a joystick around.

No details on the campaign, but they do have a random mission generator, which sounds perfect for multiplayer.

Edit: And for those of you with deep pockets, you can own your very own A-10 HOTAS.

Bags of Doritos on their desks, half drank Mountain Dews around the controls...

Nice interview with one of the producers, plus some additional screenies.

All the bigger a slap in the face when the first one officially becomes an "Ace."

There wasn't anything in that interview that I did not like.

Short little walkthrough video from a producer giving some general A-10C info. The 6DoF in the cockpit looks fantastic.
