LOTRO: Free-to-Play

I don't think its too much of them to ask that you pay $5-10 for a boxed copy and have your limit raised to 5g.

Oh yeah, I'm not complaining in any shape or form. Just saying that 2 gold isn't much. Lotro is a great game worth every penny.

Wait, so, you get all these nice perks... but only 30 days of customer support per order? Isn't that the part that should be free?

Mines of Moria Collector's Edition is $9.99 at Amazon.com.

Normal edition is the same price too, if you don't go for special editions. :)

Hell of a deal, thanks Lobster. I think I got the last one at that price.

Eyeing my box copy still in the shrinkwrap right about now.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to come down on you or anyone else. I think people tend to get carried away with f2p expectations. I was just trying to put the value of LOTRO going f2p into perspective. Even if someone ends up paying $50 for a boxed copy, that's $50 for months if not years worth of gaming goodness.

I never subscribed to LOTRO as something just didn't grab me or struck me as off. But I did buy the original box and enjoyed my 30 days. And I did buy Moria and since I didn't get that far with any of my characters, I created a new account to get the free 30 days worth of enjoyment from that. So I payed ~$80 for 60 days and it was well worth it. Now I get to play many months more on that same $80 =)

Everything I've heard about this game says it stands on its own, which is good for me as I'm not really a big fan of Tolkien. In fact, this is my favorite thing that ever came of Lord of the Rings:

No problem. My router actually crashed immediately after I posted that and then when I went back to the page I saw "one left" and thought I was doomed as I hadn't placed my order yet. DOOMED! I did eventually get everything up and running again, placed my order, and saw that it went up to "two left." Just from a different retailer.

I'm really surprised WoW doesn't go episodic with end game content rather than the artificial grind elongation for those at cap.

I think that what Blizzard has chosen for WoW will probably work out OK.

Given Blizzard's model of large releases(they've had patches that had as much content in them as a few EQ expansions), I don't think that episodic would really work. Plus, for episodic content releases to work, you have to keep a stream of content coming.

Honestly, this is the one thing that I'm not sure is going to work for LotRO as well as it did for DDO. DDO seemed perfect for episodic content because of the tabletop background. Small content patches work great with this model, because it's almost exactly the same thing that tabletop players are used to.

However, with LotRO's focus on an ongoing storyline, even more than WoW, it's hard to really see how episodic content is going to work, especially if you need to complete episode 1 before going on to episode 2.

The "Books" will be part of the free package for all players.

Just got my invite to the F2P beta. Which server should I use? Does it matter for now?

Jealous...

I believe there is only 1 beta server.

*Do use the GWJ channel by typing, /joinchannel GWJ. You can then chat in that channel by typing /1 if that is the first custom channel you have joined.

You know, in case there are other Goodgers who might also have received beta invites.

This is why I sign up for betas. Your tears are like candy!

EDIT: Got my Mines of Moria today, too! Oddly enough, it contained two copies of the game and two copies of the art book/soundtrack. Only one account key, though. One cloth map and one ring (obviously). Weird.

I just got my Beta invite as well! Are we all rolling on Landroval and is the F2P Beta on the same servers as the normal subscribed players?

Just got my beta invite.

I'm trying to remember my account name with moria unlocked...

I seem to go through this far too often. Me thinks I should maybe write it down somewhere...

Just got my invite. Though it says I only have access for 10 days?

Only one beta server. /joinchannel GWJ

Hmm should have looked at this thread sooner.......

Got mine today too. Any advice on classes to play or anything?

Faceless Joe wrote:

Really depends on what you like. Each class has something unique and interesting to offer. The good think is you can typically level to 15-17 in just a few hours, so without wasting a lot of time you can try a few different classes out. The basic overview would be:

Tanks:
Guardians
Wardens

Healers:
Minstrel
Runekeeper
(Support Healer) Captain

DPS:
Hunter
Champion
Runekeeper

Crowd Control:
Loremaster
Burgler

Now this is a little over-simplefied, as these classes can do so much more, but that should give you the basics.

Runekeeper is also a healer.

So I guess you need a p2p subscription in order to participate in a f2p beta? That seems odd to me.

Fang,

Not that I can say whether I did or did not get into the beta but a little birdie told me that you can create a brand new account and it doesn't make you sign up for any billing or input credit cards. Somewhat inconvenient but hey, it works.

I may have joined the gwj channel on Londroval if I was accepted into the beta, it might have said I was the only member of it.

On beta, the GWJ channel will often be empty as I and other active subscribers are probably only sporadically on beta.

In the live game on Landroval, just keep trying and you will spot someone on, or do a who all search for Eldain and grab someones attention.

Or add Psych's toons; Thinsul, Shunlit, Daedurth or mine; Akunin, Ninuka, Teisei and we will get ya an invite.

Yeah, it looks like it's limited.

I think that's a bug of some sort. I have it on good authority that you won't have any problems continuing to play when that time runs out.

Good to know. I am unable to confirm or deny that it works. ¬_¬

I may or may not have created an elven champion in rivendale. Don't have mines of moria so can't play a warden:(

I'm in the beta. My Rune keeper's name is Gunburn. Friend me up!

I wanted to let everyone know that Fileplanet.com is having a LOTRO beta code giveaway with a 1000 points to use in the beta or 5000 points if you are a subscriber.

I grabbed my code and will download it when I get home.

My gal is Cynwyn Hobbit Guardian.

In via FP. I'm getting no sound in movies. Phooey.
