DC: Universe - Catch All

Had some trouble forming the league. We're thinking maybe it doesn't like names with more than 2 words, so right now we've got a league named "GWJ" on "New Frontier".

Currently I'm the league leader, but I'd be happy to pass that off to someone else if you're so inclined

I am playing another toon named Ravenor and will have another named Eisenhorn.

For New Frontier we currently have

Azreal (me)
Habanero (Serengeti)
Natural (Gdawg27)
Dread Knight (SpyNavy)
GreatLeap Forward (Trashidawa)

I'll read up on starting a league and update this post if more people join up. Btw, I've friended everyone so far on the list, just hit lvl 9 without much effort.

Going to start a new thread for New Frontier since we have a decent number of folks going there.

Is the stability as bad as people saying it is. Seems like GWJ is the only place I can get an honest opinion. Are most of the people talking in here on PC? Sorry for the evil skimming but the snow has got a hold of me and I might make an impulse buy before I go crazy tonight.

downloading now. hope to get some playing time tonight and join the league

Its been rock solid over about 6 hours play time for me.

No issues here either.

PC or ps3? Most of the comments are about the PS3 having hard locks and resets.

I've created a toon on New Frontier named Bubbles.

Spy and I are both on the PC.

Where are people saying that?

My copy got delayed by weather for the second time.

Edit: Freezing is being talked about on the official forum. There's a long thread there about freezing, with people reporting from both sides (one admin said it's being examined by support right now).

Are PC players using M&K or a controller? I started with M&K but wanted to try a controller, and can't figure out how? I have the xbox wireless adapter, but really haven't used it much.

I'm playing with a xbox 360 controller and it works perfectly, better than the mouse and keyboard for pulling off combos. You can switch back and forth between the keyboard and the controller as well. You shouldn't haven't to do anything special to get the controller to work, make sure its on when you start the game and you should be good to go. There is a switch in the settings to enable the controller but I don't think I had to enable it.

I started with the mouse+KB, but quickly switched to the controller when I realized how many mouse clicks combat was going to take. Just feels more natural on the controller. Like Trashi, I didn't have to do anything special, just turned on the controller and it worked.

take with salt.

I saw that yesterday. It's a trolling post if you ask me. If DCU was having SUCH a horrid launch it'd be all over every news outlet and I just don't see that.

And official forums at launch are going to be filled with bug issues. That's just a reality.

Thanks for all the help. Turns out it wouldn't recognize it until I unpluged by Nostromo speed pad. I'm not sure I'm going to stick with it yet though.

How's the lore and story in the game? Given that it's based around comic book content I would hope there's decent story lines to the missions. Or is it just one of the DC heroes directing you to kill x mobs to progress?

Here's how it works, at least in the lower levels - Your mentor determines your initial missions. So after you beat the tutorial (which doesn't change based on mentor, powers, etc), you start out in a safehouse. For heroes, that's a police station. You get contacted on your communicator by Oracle, who starts guiding you around. Shortly you'll be told that something urgent needs to be done.

The mission itself will be pretty much a go here and kill this affair. Before and after, your mentor talks to you. The mission will then go through a couple phases in different locations. So far I haven't had any backtracking, which is a welcome change. Often, when you get to the scene of a mission, there will be optional side missions you can complete - the nice thing is that they tend to complement your "story" objectives pretty well.

The story for each of the missions (at least the lower level ones) tends to be (by the end) "Superhero X is in trouble (fighting alone, under mind control, etc). Get there and help them". This results in some cool set piece battles at the end of each mission arc. You get to fight alongside the iconic DC heroes and sometimes rescue them. You tend to rescue a truckload of citizens and destroy magic artifacts/fear gas foggers/whatever along the way.

The only real story arc of the game is the overarching one from all the trailers about the Brainiac invasion of earth.

Although I don't really need some kind of mega story for it, I am hoping that they leave the initial content as it is, and release story-based content a few times a year penned by comic authors. They could also let me "re-live" famous moments in comics - Batman could contact you and say, "When I was a new hero I was tested by blah blah. Let's see if you can take on the same challenge." I know I get a thrill out of seeing the Daily Planet and the Bat-Signal, it would be fun to fight Falcone's thugs in their mansion, etc.

Tried to login this morning and I only see 1 server, a low pop PvP server... That has a queue of 450 people. Really? Are the servers just down, or am I missing something?

Bah, never mind. They are patching the servers.

Yeah, that happened to me too. I had an hour to kill before a dr appointment with morning and got 10 mins of game time in before the server shut down.

I've only played 45 mins or so (about 2 hrs if you count my time in the character creator) and it seems promising. Seems like a super hero based borderlands.

Giantbomb has an quicklook up.

Ugh, this might have just pushed me over the edge....

Damn you

I'm not sure how the other superhero mmo's have been handling loot but DCUO's system seems particularly revolutionary to me; when you get a new piece of loot, you unlock its stats and the gear model. The cool thing is you can choose to show any of the gear models on your character you have previously unlocked but you keep the stats of the best gear.

Additionally, you can modify your character's color palette and the palette for the individual gear pieces anytime, brilliant! If WoW had this system my warlock would still be wearing the pre-Lich King PvP gear models.

Damn, got a gc for Best buy from xmas, and just got a $5 reward zone reward, but have to wait till tomorrow to pick it up...

City of Heroes' loot was just items that you slotted into your powers, so you still had full control over your costume the whole time.

But this sounds like an excellent solution, keeping stats and show/hide pieces that you like. Also gives people an easy way to deal with any possible costume clipping issues, which are probably pretty low on the patch priority list at this point.

So I guess the only question now for me is....pc or ps3. Is everyone in the thread PC?

Seems like there's 2-3 PS3 people.

Seems tempting to me to just get PC and play it with my PS3 controller. Drivers at motionjoy.com

I'm torn, I just built a new rig so I'd like to use that, but my tv and couch are super comfortable too.

The PS3 instabilities hit me really hard launch day too, but they're working really hard to get all of that stuff ironed out. Already should be loads better.

So far things look like they're going pretty well.

Glad folks are digging it.

Go with the couch, I really would like to see a GWJ League on PS3. Personally I've had 0 problems with it in terms of glitching or lagging that I've heard so much about. And using a controller is the best way to go whatever your decision.
