DC: Universe - Catch All

I've done the Australian Arena a few times. It's a shame it doesn't pop more since it is quite fun.

After the last patch I noticed a substantial...change...glitch...bug...something...that lets me spam the two attacks that happens when you tap forward or backward during long draw. If I hold down the ranged attack button after completing the first attack, and then just keep tapping the forward or backward key (not too fast, but you can do it pretty quickly) the attack just keeps happening over and over and over without a recharge of the long draw ability.

Yeah, archery seems pretty nerfed, unfortunately. Other than this. I've had (and have read on the DCUO forums) the opposite issue as well sometimes: you get the long draw animation when you're using trick shots. So I'm stuck in a long animation well after the arrows have flown. I'm sure all of it will go away soon.

we've moved to page 2 of the forums, are things slowing down. I know i've haven't been on in a few days, duo's are fun but running them over and over gets a little old and hard to do hard alerts on the ps3 with pugs. At least some of the bugs have been fixed and i'm confident someday I will be able to use voicechat on the ps3 version.

I'm still playing pretty much every night. Mostly doing PVP with my buddies and alerts here and there. I also have a lot of alts and I just got a Nature/Flight/Bow to 30 over the weekend. I'm still enjoying the game. Most of the exploits have been fixed, but there are still some annoying ones around and some minor bugs, but it's getting better.

I just wish they were faster to patch things, but I guess that's the price we pay when they are trying to develop to 2 different platforms simultaneously.

I still play every day and am loving it. I've finished two of the raids and mostly have been focused on the alerts, duos, and challenges every day. I spent this past weekend working on feats and got up to 51 feat points -- I still have a lot left to do with that but I'm happy with where I'm at now. This is definitely going to be a long term game for me.

well, I've hit 30 and something of a wall. Never see any goodjers online, but have teamed a few times. All in all, though, it seems the game now is made up of repeating what i've done in the past, against harder enemies. Is this it? loot farming and repetition?

And even at 30, I can't kick Aquaman's ass

That's why I haven't renewed my subscription past the end of this month. I absolutely loved the game but I'm just not into the raid-gear grind setup. As soon as I saw that most of the dailys were replaying old missions with all the enemies levelled to 30 I lost interest. I played one hero and one villain to 30 and in the future I'll likely resub to try out some different mentor quest lines. Fun game but it'll probably be one I just jump back into for a month or two at a time. Don't think I could do a long haul on this one.

The game is good. Real good. I subscribed for 3 months, and that should hold me over until TOR.

yes, this is really unfortunate. I was enjoying the crap out of this game, then hit 30. Now its the same levels, but the enemies are much harder, and resist most of my controller's effects. I can't up my stats without new gear, and I can't win or buy new gear without repeating levels on a massive scale. Can't seem to get other quest lines without starting over with a new mentor.

This is the first time I've ever reached max level in a MMORPG. Is it generally like this?

Its not like there's new scenery to look at, either.

I finally picked this game up and I'm quite enjoying it, but there is one thing that is bothering me.

How can you create an Iconic "superman" type character? So far as I can tell there is either Fire or Ice powersets for a "tank" and neither of them make my character invulnerable without any elemental effects. Is there a way to customize your powers so that you don't turn into a giant ice golem? I just want my "Mister Samson" character to retain his appearance while he does his brawling thing.

Oh, and another thing, Level 22 before I can get Super Strength?!

That was one small issue I had with the game. The limited power selection. As you've pointed out, you can't just have a super-strength character. I felt a bit limited in the type of character I could make. I also wished that I could choose to be a controller/healer/tank role using any of the power sets rather than being limited to a couple of power sets for each. For instance, to be a healer I had to choose either nature or sorcery. Of course making multiple power trees within each power set would've taken a lot more work and balancing. Guess it's just wishful thinking on my part.

What I don't get is that the problem with varied superpowers was pretty much addressed in Tabletop RPGs when Champions came out. The whole issue is solved by disassociating effects from trappings. Just have your "power framework" selection be what you want to be able to do, and then a "Effect framework" be how it appears.

Yet, Superhero MMOs still seem to be stuck with the whole "you must have your powers look the way we want them to" mode. Even City of Heroes (by far the most flexible in this way) still have some rather strong ties between effects and appearances.

Brawling weapon set + Super-Strength iconic power. Top it off with a power set of your choice, and bam, super-strength character. Sometimes you need to level a bit to get everything you want, but a lot of character concepts are possible.

Except that you can't get Super Strength till 22.. which means you'll be playing more than 2/3rds of the game without it. Also if you want to be super-tough like Superman, you basically HAVE to have elemental effects.

Getting to 22 is like 3 nights of casual gaming. I'm actually fond of that and I usually don't roll alts on other MMOs, but on DCUO, I have pretty much a character at 30 or close to 30 for each power set.

Yeah, you can't create a character concept from level 1. In DCUO you need to level a bit, but there are a lot of options once you do. That is not a big problem for me though, since I love the game from 1 to 30. End game is not so great, since a lot of what you end up doing is repetitive levels, missions and dungeons but on a higher difficulty and with better loot.

Champions with all their choices, all those power sets, a lot more liberty of creating the character you want, didn't hold me for more then the first month. I don't know. Creating the character in CO was the most fun part in the game and the rest of it after that was just... meh.

Wow, your casual gaming is certainly different than mine. I'm only level 9 after two nights.

I'm more on your level Valmorian. Having gotten to 30 once, I think I could get to 22 pretty fast these days, but not on a first time pass. There's too much to enjoy in the game to do it like a grind. And that's what concerns me about having reached the level cap and finding end game content less interesting: I don't want to keep doing that same grind. ...

Hm another question for you DCUO experts, I notice that the Mind powerset has an inherent bonus of +1 stealth, but I don't see any references to this as a stat anywhere else. What does this mean?

My guess is that it just reduces the aggro range for mobs.

Apparently the game is available on PSN with today's update? Still $59.99 though.

Hm, isn't there a DCUO Developer that posts here? I hope he/she managed to stay on with SOE after the layoffs I've heard about.

I'm really enjoying this game, and hope it doesn't completely die off..

Me too. I haven't played in a while but I think that the game mechanics and the license will help it stay around for at least a few years.

Mike Zenke worked on DCU but not sure if he was a developer or not. Still i think its normal for shops to thin the herd a few months after release.

Zenke tweeted the following today:

Thank you to the folks who have expressed worry for me today. It's, in my case, unwarranted. My thoughts go to those affected by today.

I went to Aruba for a week last month and for some reason it snapped me out of the DCUO spell. Didn't feel that pressing need to play it that I'd had previously, and when I figured I'd give it a spin yesterday it greeted me with a two hour update download that I couldn't bear to let finish (played The Show instead). Has anything major changed? Also found out I can't trade in this PS3 disc! Wonderful!

Whoa.

Okay, I'll let this update run (however frickin' long that takes) and check it out.

Note to self: Return to DCUO. It's good.

This was the best primer for post-30 content I've found yet (needed as I am still an MMO noob):

I took a break from leveling up my second character and dove into two things I've been squeamish about, duos and PvP. Actually really enjoyed both. I am a long way from any iconic armor, though.

As much as I was kind of enjoying this game, the security issues and how Sony handled them has made me cancel this.. well, that and the more I played this the more irritated I got with the little bugs that never seemed to get addressed.
