Red Dead Redemption Catch-all

Im in, I just preordered this and Alan Wake

Really nice hands-on from the Guardian. My favourite quote:

The early twentieth century setting is a masterstroke. This isn't the mythical heyday of the old west; that culture is in its death throes. Throughout the game, technology is encroaching on the area like a virus. At first, it's the railroads carving through the landscape, but as you travel north you encounter the first confused telephone users bellowing into handsets, and later, the first production line motorcars. John Marston is a man at odds with this coming era; he's a dinosaur. And this sense of growing displacement adds poignancy to the action.

This gives me real confidence that they have spent a lot of time on both the atmosphere and the storyline, so hopefully you won't get the rather odd clash of lunacy and seriousness that marred GTAIV's original storyline.

You bunch of bastards. Now I've had to pre-order this too. It's been an expensive month for me. I get into The Dresden Files, and buy all of those, just as China Mieville releases a new book. And in games, I cave and buy Fifa World Cup so I can play with my son, then I get strongarmed into getting L4D2 on 360 so I can play with some friends, and now this. I'll have to cut back for a bit.

Also, have you guys seen the trailer for The Good, the Bad, and the Weird? Korean Western set in Wild Manchuria in the 1930s, starring that one guy from The Host and Joint Security Area. Look awesome!

Thanks for that tip, just added it to my NetFlix Cue. The Trailer looked like it will be a fun watch.

That looks better than Sukiyaki Western Django which was entertaining in parts but didnt really do it for me.

Do we have an Alan Wake thread? Because I'm feeling torn on it, based on what I've watched & read lately.

Yeah, that's what I get for posting quickly at lunch.

Someone on NeoGaf claims that Game Informer gave RDR a 9.75 in the latest issue.

Not the most reputable magazine out there, but a good sign nonetheless.

I feel like GameInformer is just about the only magazine out there anymore...

I have really been enjoying the newly re-launched EGM, with the EGMi component as well.

I think Game Informer might just be the most reputable magazine still in print

...that is not saying much.

Well, there's still Edge, and i'm liking the new GamePro a lot since Davison took over. Enough that i subscribed, and let my Edge sub drop.

re-rail: RDR co-op missions, mmm. much promise in this one. Just wish it included local, guess i need to buy a second xbox.

Can you piledrive horses into glue in this game?

The already-mentioned Edge and newly John Davison'ed GamePro, plus Games TM--I'd rank them all far ahead of GI. I haven't checked out GI since their new update, though.

I'm just saying the print landscape is no longer littered with publications.

I so torn on this game. I've never been a fan of Westerns, at least in movies. I think a game set as a Western could be cool. I'm afraid it will be too much like GTA4, which was an amazing city but not a great game. It seems to be getting a lot of early hype though.

EGM is back. I think the first new issue is out on the newsstands.

That sold me the game. Yes, I would like to experience an age's passing.

You're doing it wrong.

This should sell you on the game:

But I'll buy the EGM when I see it.

GTTV 'Exclusive game play and cutscene' look at RDR, not the greatest quality but still gets me pumped for this game (canceled my AW preorder for this): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0DqcY7s6i0 - GT site hasn't properly uploaded SD/HD versions yet.

Edit: better quality link found via GAF - Note: Part 1 only 5 minutes, other link was 10.

Word around the net is that Games TM (a mag I trust as much as any) gave RDR a 9/10, and said that it's completely and totally GTA IV out west.

Just watched it. That looks fantastic.

Man, so many previews and quick looks. I think I'm gonna hold off and try to spoil as little as possible for myself. You guys are sure making it tempting though!

Sigh.

Well, I broke down and pre-ordered through Amazon. Got the $20 gift card coming, and an instant $5 to be used towards MP3s.

I'm actually not a huge fan of the "Fin de siècle" western genre, but what's done is done

I'm still skeptical. GTA IV still felt like I was moving more from cutscene to cutscene, finishing the missions the 1 way you were allowed to. If this is the same thing, but with horses, no thanks. Unless the horses steer better.

Hey, good deal.

I also preorderd from Amazon recently to take advantage of the $20 gift card, but I didn't realize you got $5 worth of MP3's on top of that. A quick email check confirmed that I got in on the bonus bonus too.

Sweet.

I think after seeing that last Gametrailers segment, I agree with your decision, and will be doing likewise. The coverage at this point has moved from features to content, and has gotten a bit spoilery. I'm gonna run silent 'til I get it in the mail. Not that should be hard with the travelling I'm doing next week.

I'm in the same boat. I also signed up for a free month of amazon prime so release day shipping is free.

So what is the name of the gwj's posse going to be?

GWJHorsMurdr?
