Well my gpu blew up while playing tf2 today. I have no clue what is good to get right now that doesn't cost a million dollars. First reaction is GTS 250, but I have no clue. Looking to spend around $150 with a bit of an upgrade over the 9800. Any ideas?
This is a good place to start. It looks like the best bet for about $150 is an Radeon HD 5770 1GB.

This would be my suggestion as well, without a doubt.
Thirded.
How did I live before digital distribution of old, cheap games?

ATI has that market all locked down. 5770.

Cool. Thanks guys. Looks like HIS H577FM1GD Radeon HD 5770 1GB could be what I'll get. Found a $15 off coupon so $145 - $10 mail in rebate. It's also from newegg and that's always a plus.

Nice! Welcome to the ATI camp. There're a lot of us these days.

Right now, ATI is kicking ass. I'm glad to see it. NVidia has been on top for too long.
I've been very happy with my 5870. It's quiet (I bought the Vapor-X flavor; apparently the regular coolers are a little noisy), runs VERY cool at idle, and doesn't get that hot even under load. And it pumps out pixels like crazy. Nice piece of hardware.
There was a long time where I wouldn't use an ATI card if someone gave it to me. These days, while on the whole I'd call the NVidia feature set maybe a little more complete (I think the NVidia scaling is better, for instance, and the control panel has more knobs to twiddle), their cards are pretty damn compelling.
Thanks uckickmydog - this is good timing (for me - I'm sorry your video card exploded). My videocard is 5 years old and it's finally time to upgrade. Being back in school means I'm not in the market for a ~$300 card - I just want whatever is the de facto sweet spot for price versus performance, and once finals are over I should actually have some time to play.
Now to find a power supply...but I won't derail your thread.
