Assassin's Creed Brotherhood

So those of us who signed up to Ubisoft Online got sent this link today.

Apparently due out this winter, finally bringing multiplayer mayhem to the franchise.

Thoughts?

It kinda gives the vibe that at least for a while you`d be playing as a Templar assassin. The intro.. the weapons all have templar markings. And character could well be female (razor-fan!).

I'm very skeptical, but I'm not going to dismiss it sight unseen. Multiplayer certainly isn't something I was demanding from AC, and I'm not sure what it'll look like, but I'm happy to wait and see. I do like AC and what it does a hell of a lot.

I am pleased that this is where they'll expand on Ezio and the Renaissance, and not in the inevitable AC3. While there was obviously a lot of rich material in the setting that AC2 couldn't touch, I love the series conceit of Desmond moving through the history of his ancestry. Presumably, this is a way to stick with Ezio in an expansion similar to what GTA4 and Dragon Age have done, and let the story move forward in AC3.

Currently this is on my avoid list until proven otherwise. Multiplayer in AC? *sigh* That's not why I play AC.

A 15 hour singleplayer campaign, compared to the 40 or so hours of AC2? Just so they can get multiplayer in? Ubi, you can have your AC 2.5. I'll wait for AC3 if you do a good job.

What, you think Ezio can't rock a razor fan? To be honest I think some of the assassins in that weapon video look a bit curvier than Ezio. I wouldn't be surprised if they threw a lady in there. Preferably one a little more proactive than the others, whose idea of assassination seems to be waiting for your victim to fall asleep in your lap.

I don't know if there'll be a Templar Assassin. The outfits still had the hoods and it could just be that they're using Templar weapons because that's all they can get. Interesting speculation, though.

There are only two ideas I've heard pitched for AC3. WWII Germany, and 19th century Japan. I can really dig the Japanese setting and they could definitely bring something new to it, but it's been done so much I'm not sure they'll risk turning off their audience. Meanwhile, WWII has been done to death in every way possible yet people still keep buying the damn games so it's a much safer bet.

I'd much rather have AC2.5 than ACWWII.

I hope it's mostly Desmond, actually, flashing back through a variety of times and settings. Assuming #3 is a trilogy closer, which I'm pretty sure they said it would be.

I hope it's more Co-op than versus.

Co-op assassinations would be pretty stinking sweet.

So much potential... Don't fail me Ubi!

A new video of the gameplay in SP.

Looks like they've made a few good changes to the combat, and I loved AC 2 so I want more of a good thing. But if there's been any explanation of how MP will work, I haven't found it yet.

Edit: They also released this CG video today, which doesn't reveal anything but heavily hints at a coop-heavy approach. Color me heavily interested.

It's pseudo squad-based. According to the preview i just read over at Eurogamer you befriend dissidents in Rome, train them up to become assassins (and make them better by sending them off on missions across Europe) and then call on them during missions.

Imagine if The Godfather, Mass Effect 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 had a baby.... well, brotherhood is it.

Looks pretty good, despite Dvowels almost ruining it for me by using the "_____ had a baby" phrase.

Here is the Eurogamer article.

The other members of the squad are NPCs. The specifics about how MP works are embargoed until later this week.

Just because your mind is too limited to encompass all that awesomeness!

No, because three IPs are incapable of sexual reproduction. D:

The multiplayer looks REALLY cool.

They have a circle-assassination mode (called "Wanted") very similar to what we saw from The Ship: each player has to assassinate one other player, while being hunted by a third. It looks like the better you're doing, the more players are allowed to track and kill you.

It looks like you can select from different skills and with a few changes to the reward/penalty system, it's much like multiplayer. You're still free-running and assassinating.

Looks infinitely better than the usual deathmatch.

I'm not sure there's much character customization beyond the ability thing, though. You pick from a selection of models that look pre-set. Maybe for the best, since it would be harder to blend into a crowd if you were wearing distinct/rare items.

If you've ever wondered when the world would deliver an Assassin's Creed jack-in-the-box, your wait is finally over. Ubisoft has announced the best Collector's Edition of all time.

I was probably going to skip this, but that piqued my interest, I'm ashamed to admit...

Still not sure on whether the standard edition is worth it, yet alone a collectors edition. I think I'll wait until a great deal more info is released.

Developer interview says that the Jack in the Box is actually USB and you can set it to go off in response to certain game events. Unfortunately, it must be plugged in and in contact with Ubi's servers to go off at all, ever.

After waiting 4 hours tonight to play Assassin's Creed II because Ubisoft DRM servers were down, I'm officially off the "must-buy" list. I'm having so much fun with AC II but I will never purchase another Ubisoft game with this ridiculous DRM....

I didn't have that much interest in this game, but the Collector's Edition looks really cool and perhaps even worth the money.

I suppose that means I should play AC2 first.

I have the same problem with Splinter Cell. I'm lucky in the fact that I bought AC2 on x360. Never again will I buy a Ubisoft product on the PC, if at all for the 360 either. Their DRM has really soiled the whole experience for me.

There is an interesting video demo here from the recent Gamescom 2010.

I think this will be an interesting game, but one that I'm not willing to pay full price for. I think I'll be picking this up when it goes on sale next year. The fact that it's only 1 city now... hmmm...

That video got my interest. It looks like they are focusing on the gameplay mechanics and the world/city, which were my favorite parts, and ignoring the stupid plot. At least I hope so. I'm a sucker for games in which you take control of a large map one section at a time, so if that video is an accurate rep of the game, I am in for sure.

But it's a BIG city!

I'm actually a bit concerned about that, too. Each of the cities in the first game had their own flavor. No matter how big you make Rome, Venice is still Venice. That... other little city with all the crowded buildings and the green tinge to it is still uh... that. I really liked that look and feel and you didn't find anything quite so tight and overlapping in any of the other cities.

A MP demo from PAX.

Although I can still see the potential for interesting techniques and strategy, this demo looks like standard deathmatch to me.

And here's a fancy trailer that just went up, too.

My roommate is playing the "pre-beta" (?) on PSN right now, and I don't really know what to think of it. There was little explanation of the mechanics. I could see a lot of potential issues with public players not playing in the spirit of the game (he himself would act in a very non-NPC way and get identified and killed because of it).

As long as his acting in a non-NPC way doesn't get ME killed, that's fine by me.

I guess the problem is that PSN/XBox Live gamers know how what a deathmatch looks like and once they've recognized it, that's how they're going to play. Then they'll conclude that the multiplayer totally sucks because they get killed a lot for some weird reason, even though they're doing everything "right."

I'm in the beta, anyone want to play with me? I'm Avatar18 on PSN.

Beta Impressions. Interesting? Yes. Fun? Not really.

If you can, provide specifics, sir. I was very skeptical, but the videos I've seen make it look like exactly the sort of thing I'd both love and be good at. So, you know, share. Issues, expectations, preferences, whatever.

I too demand specifics. Are people playing it the way the game wants, or are they running around being stabby?
