Distant Worlds Catch All

Really? I had no idea.

Looks like Das is giving it another go.

Any of you folks playing this have mods active? I watched that Das video and he had a big mod pack installed. Everything I look up seems to be referencing 2014 mods mostly, so wasn't sure if there are more current mods for the game or if the game now is pretty good without mods?

Das's new game has a mod pack called 'Retreat UE', which is a compilation of a variety of mods. I've just downloaded it and installed it, and it works fine. There is a link to the pack in the description of Das's video.

There are mods in there that add races, unique techs and tidy up the UI and graphics.

On the matrix forum there are links to plenty of other mod packs - the ST Next Generation one is pretty good.

The mods I've used the most are Extended Universe and Star Trek: Picard Era, both of which are awesome.

I'll have to try this retreat one, it looks fantastic.

Extended Universe is great. I tried version 2 but ran into several bugs and removed it.

Well, this Retreat UE mod is great so far. Started a random game with clusters, and it put me and another empire in the same starting system, which I've never seen before.

Within moments (real-time, not game-time), they demanded one of my mining stations or they'd declare war. Well, war it is. I'm liking this already!

Here are the mods I loaded up for my most recent game a couple of months ago. Experienced no issues and it made for a great game!

Funny, in the new Das series it also started him in the same system as another empire (one that was a little more advanced, too).

Right, it's pretty great actually. They declared war, I smacked them around a bit, now we have an uneasy peace. It's fun!

No idea why there's a double post. Sorry!

Ha, cool.

For kicks, I fired up my last saved game from DWU. It was from November 2014, so right before Elite was released. I'm going to need to watch more videos before I actually try to play this again, because those videos were the only reason I was even remotely competent at the game.

Funny thing is I actually remembered the map from the game I loaded, but I did not remember that I was playing as the filthy humans. I thought I was those little furry guys (Atuuk), but nope.

I also still had the save from the one game I won - as the Naxxil.

Arise! Wish I had fantastic news or something, but at least I come with good news. Erik at Matrix has indicated that in the next year he's hoping to have a lot more info about Distant Worlds 2 for everyone:

With that said, I know you are all impatient for news and an eventual release. I can only say that we will release it when it's ready, but I hope we will have a lot of news for you well before another year has passed.

That's the most strong statement made to date other than "we are working on it" and points to a targeted 2017 release, possibly even first half of 2017. So, good news!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEE

In case anyone here remembers Larry Monte, he posted a brief notice on YT about why he hasn't been around for the last 2 years (and does not expect to produce more videos in the future).

Edit: Also, this week's episode of Three Moves Ahead is discussing DW. I have not yet listened to it.

That 3MA episode made me a bit sad.

And I was looking forward to hearing it, too.

It's a good episode, I'm just sad they don't love it as I do.

You should listen to it Hrdina and then come back and talk. I have some observations about it but don't want to spoil.

Interesting, I'm half way through the episode and they didn't sound negative towards it at all in my opinion. Now I'm curious to finish the podcast tomorrow at work and see how their mood changes.

I'm also looking forward to hearing their views on Aurora as I had never heard of that game but it sounds interesting.

I plan to do that, but it's behind a few others in my commuting podcast queue (and the GWJ CC gets bumped to the front when it's published).

Thread here. The thread is kind of old but probably still relatively germane, if you are interested. Quill18 has a LP of it if you want to check it out a little to see if it might be your thing.

Aurora is still being worked on? Wow...

Look's like Steve's writing an updated version in C#

I see we are keeping that great Aurora design aesthetic though:

Damn, VB6 + Access for the original Aurora implementation. That's sure a, ah, labor of love.

I haven't listened to the 3MA episode yet (way behind on my podcasts), but good to get a heads up about what to expect. Clearly DW is amazing and Rob would be wrong for saying otherwise, but I can totally see learning it feeling like a chore if it comes across your desk as an "assignment."

If I hadn't done a PreWarp, no automation start I would be in the same boat as Zachney. That's what it took to really get it to click with me.

See, I'm the opposite. It took me having everything automated for the game to click with me. Well, the option to have it automated but ask for my approval. If I tried to play this game without any automation I would go crazy.

If you start pre-warp, it is very manageable with no automation since there is not a lot going on. Once you start to expand, you just turn on automation where you want and keep going, turning on automation as you deem necessary or desirable.

Pre-Warp is a great way to get started, no lie. What worked for me was the one ship method, which they mention in the 3MA podcast but it doesn't sound like they actually tried it.

I think you've got enough DW love in you for at least a dozen people Brian.
