Non-game Android Apps Recommendations Catch-All

Anyone have an extra google inbox invite available? I'd like to try out the next version of Gmail. I emailed them, but I have zero patience :).

same here.
remember all those Google + invites I sent way back when... pretty please?

I received a push notification from an Amazon app today - something about buying books. I wasn't about to tap on it to have it somehow register as an effective ad, so I tried to uninstall all my Amazon apps. Unfortunately, the Verizon LG G3 doesn't let you do that, but you can disable them.

So, I disabled all my Amazon apps and wrote an angry feedback email to Amazon. Crap like this makes them look like one of those free-to-play game companies that couldn't care less how they treat their customers as long as they keep them spending.

I got the same thing, even though I have Kindle set to only give me notifications if it's about downloads, not for marketing.

Last time this happened a couple of months ago, I sent an angry customer complaint, and they contacted me back apologizing and saying they were investigating why it happened. I hadn't gotten one since until now.

You can always mute notifications on the app I guess, but I hate when an app ignores it's own preferences to spam notifications.

There...that's settled: Pocket Casts is officially the best.

The podcast player that gets our vote is Pocket Casts. It’s a feature-rich, powerful app that makes subscribing to shows and setting up automatic downloads a snap. It also syncs across platforms with the iOS version of Pocket Casts, making it ideal if you move between an Android phone and an iPad.

Above just being a vehicle for your podcasts, the standout aspect of Pocket Casts is definitely its design. It’s a tremendous showcase for Google’s Material Design, with fluid animations and color schemes that shift colors based on a podcast’s artwork. Your subscriptions are arranged in a tiled screen with big, beautiful artwork for every show, and Pocket Casts has a seemingly endless array of preferences, playlist filters, and auto-download settings, so you can tailor it fully to your liking. It also has functions for smart speed and volume normalization, but Pocket Casts doesn’t pull them off quite as well as some other apps.

So basically at this point, we could (should) rename the thread to "Pocket Casts, the best podcast player for Android and other Non-game Android Apps Recommendations Catch-All"?

But then what will we post/answer questions about? This thread will die!

Someone get General_Crespin in here. There's a missing feature in Pocket Casts that he always points out, and I can't remember what it is.

Sorting order I think.

I wish it deleted podcasts immediately, or very soon after listening to them, instead of waiting until there's another new one to replace it. They take up a lot of space when you have a large library.

Pocket Casts does this for me =)

Yeah, as soon as an episode finishes, it goes away... Never had this problem.

Keyboard apps?

Downloaded SwiftKey but argh.

So used to be base swipe keyboard that swift is extremely frustrating. Maybe I'm just using it poorly.

I know not this "keyboard apps" thing... We're a Pocket Casts-only thread here...

I still use the base Samsung keyboard. It works like swype (which is pretty popular). After having a keyboard with numbers and letters I have been spoiled and hate going back to the WP8 or iPhone keyboards.

It's in settings, storage, auto delete played files.

Agreed entirely, been using PocketCasts for over a year now and I love it.

Oh wait, I thought we were talking about Pocket Cats. My bad.

Edit: wait, I think he was talking pocket casts, and it definitely auto deletes.

Okay, I hate the new Outlook app. Hate. It.

The stock mail app doesn't seem to allow me to get into my Hotmail junk folder. Can you guys recommend an app that'll let me access the junk folder?

I'm prepared to receive harassment over still using Hotmail.

Could be worse, you could be using aol e-mail.

Ok, how do I quote from mobile?

You can see junk in the outlook app. Click the hamburger menu, click the account, then open "folders" at the bottom of the list.

And I still use my hotmail/outlook account. I actually like the web interface better than gmail, and the sweep function is so great.

Folders! Of course.

I still hate the app. Lol. The way it works. The junk mail thing was the killer.

I liked the basic app they are killing better for spacing, font size, etc. However, the new app has a bit more functionality, so I'm not sure yet what I think of the change.

BTW, can't quote and use other function buttons on mobile. They've disabled it until they get things squared away.

Mobile4lyfe, GWJ crew!

Can you try another email client, gar? I particularly love CloudMagic.

I have gotten used to it. I think the focused mail does a pretty good job of separating junk mail (that I signed up for) out from real mail. I was dissappointed that I couldn't easily select a bunch of mail and trash it but figured out how to do that. I like the icons next to the mail and the quick filters. I like that they added archiving.

I wish unread messages had more visual cues that they are unread. White and grey are too close to each other. Bold the title or something.

It was much easier to select multiple messages before.

Now, Google's new inbox. That I hate. I can't stand it. I can't find anything. Nothing is intuitive. It makes me want to kick puppies.

Yes, I can, and that's kinda exactly what I wanted to know.

Thanks, dude, but I'm able to use the Play store on my own. lol

Geez, just trying to be helpful, gawd.
