Non-game Android Apps Recommendations Catch-All

That damn near sells the watch by itself! I have an s4,and have wondered if I should consider some kind of smart watch.

Wait for the new one. When they start selling the generation 2 watches, the first one should plummet in price. Geek chic for peanuts is worth waiting for.

BestBuy here already sells the Gear watch for $149.

I think the Pebble has a Pip Boy face, too.

It does; can't get it to work, though. I might need to clear some space

Anyone have any experience with FolderSync?

I'm switching from a Windows Phone to an Android phone (Nexus 4), and the only feature I've really missed are the automatic backups of my pictures to SkyDrive. I can use the SkyDrive app to upload my pictures manually, but I'd rather have an automated option. (The built-in uploading to Google+ isn't really something I'm interested in doing.) FolderSync popped up in searches around the Play Store, but I thought I'd check here first.

I got FolderSync and it works quite well except that SkyDrive apparently doesn't allow automated synchronization. I'm not sure if this is a SkyDrive problem in general or an issue with the way FolderSync handles uploads, but I'll look into it more.

In case, you know, there's more than just me wanting to do this specific thing. :P

Digging up an old one for an update here. With the update of the SkyDrive Android app today to the new OneDrive, you can now backup your photos automatically. I think they even give you 3GB of free space if you enable it.

Pocket Casts has been updated to include Chromecast support, among a few other tweaks.

We can all agree that it's the best now. Right?

Right?

Still doesn't let me sort podcasts by oldest to newest and newest to oldest on an individual basis. Pass.

The devs have been very responsive to requests via twitter.

I talked to them about this back when the rewrite was released. Been on the drawing board forever.

My latest request was for them to auto-adjust remaining playback time based on playback speed. So if I'm playing at 2x speed, and it's an hour podcast, it should only show 30 minutes remaining instead of an hour.

Both of my audiobook players do that, and it's very nice.

Can y'all suggest a good video player? Mp4s, specifically.

I've tried many. These days I install BSPlayer and forget the rest, but I'll include some below if you want to try them out. I've ended up choosing BSPlayer by default simply because it plays well on all (7) of the devices we've had, and it's handled everything I've thrown at it at smooth fps with hardware decoding support.

DicePlayer
MX Player
VLC for Android

There's also a free version of BSPlayer to try it out.

VLC is great, except that it doesn't yet have extensive hardware decoding support, which on a modern device mostly means that it uses more battery than it should. Because of that, I bought MX Player for use on long flights, and it's been great -- it's played everything I've thrown at it without problems. If you don't need to play back hours and hours of video on a single charge, though, then VLC should do the job just fine.

MoboPlayer has handled everything I've thrown at it just fine.

I grabbed bsplayer free to check that out.

One issue: When I plug my s4 into my PC, it recognizes it as a portable media player, and doesn't let me browse any of the storage. My laptop does. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I'm running Win7 64 bit.

Thanks!

I'm using MX Player and it worked well for my trip down to Mexico. Watched Angel Beats on the way down and back.

I've seen that sometimes on Win 8. What I've done to clear it is to switch it on the phone from media mode to camera mode and back. Not sure why that works. Just pull down your notifications from the top and click the USB icon to switch it.

Might try to get the latest Samsung drivers for their Android phones to see if that helps.

+1 for BS Player.
It can look up for subtitles online; if that's something people are interested in.

I am going to give a +1 for MX Player on my part. I really like the gesture assisted video controls (swipe left/right to move through the video, up/down to change volume and brightness depending on which half of the screen) and I don't remember it having any problems with videos, be it on my S4, N7 or the Xperia Tablet Z.

Time to look at BSPlayer though

I have never gotten along with gesture controls That's one of the reasons I gave up on MX Player. If you are not plagued with the same kind of double-sinister-hand syndrome, it's not a bad choice. When I remembered which gesture did what, it worked very nicely.

First idea worked like a charm! Thanks!

I use XBMC on my Note 2 all the time but bet it would be tricky if I didn't have the stylus. I also use it on my Shield and it is amazing there but it was built to be controlled by an xbox controller.

I mostly use it as a simple way to move through a video. BSPlayer has more or less the same gestures, but the scrolling only shows me a time stamp, while MX moves there right away and shows me the scenes in between. -> I'll stick to MX and Plex/XBMC for now.

Anybody else finding wonkiness with the updated Pocket Casts? Mostly around playlists not being followed.

I only have one playlist, and I take my podcasts and queue them into it manually. However, if I move things around in the playlist, sometimes it just ignores the new order and continues to play what the original order. I'm not doing anything different than I used to, but it's behaving differently.

Also, I'm not sure if it's related yet or not, but if I'm in my audiobook player, it will sometimes just stop randomly. If I hit my headphone button or a play button on a bluetooth speaker, Pocket Casts takes over and plays instead of the audiobook player. Generally when this happens, the lock screen is also kind of doing some flash thing like something is trying to take focus of it until I unlock it. Not sure it's doing it every time or not. So it might be unrelated to Pocket Casts, or it might be Pocket Cast trying to do something with it's lock screen widget that's taking over the audio app.

Hadn't noticed either of those, but I did notice that when I hit download and started playing as soon as the play option became available, it ended the podcast when it got to that point. Not too big a deal since I have most set to auto download, but was still annoying.

Pocket Casts has generally been working fine, at least with regards to adding podcasts to a queue.

I have noticed, however, that Pocket Casts keeps giving me "Unknown" for the podcast and the podcaster on the lockscreen. The text info is still sent over Bluetooth to my car, so I know the information still exists: it just isn't propagating onto the lockscreen.

I dunno. They'll fix it.

My keyboard of choice, Swype, is free on Amazon today along with a bunch of other stuff.
