Non-game Android Apps Recommendations Catch-All

I talked to them about this back when the rewrite was released. Been on the drawing board forever.

My latest request was for them to auto-adjust remaining playback time based on playback speed. So if I'm playing at 2x speed, and it's an hour podcast, it should only show 30 minutes remaining instead of an hour.

Both of my audiobook players do that, and it's very nice.

Can y'all suggest a good video player? Mp4s, specifically.

I've tried many. These days I install BSPlayer and forget the rest, but I'll include some below if you want to try them out. I've ended up choosing BSPlayer by default simply because it plays well on all (7) of the devices we've had, and it's handled everything I've thrown at it at smooth fps with hardware decoding support.

DicePlayer
MX Player
VLC for Android

There's also a free version of BSPlayer to try it out.

VLC is great, except that it doesn't yet have extensive hardware decoding support, which on a modern device mostly means that it uses more battery than it should. Because of that, I bought MX Player for use on long flights, and it's been great -- it's played everything I've thrown at it without problems. If you don't need to play back hours and hours of video on a single charge, though, then VLC should do the job just fine.

MoboPlayer has handled everything I've thrown at it just fine.

I grabbed bsplayer free to check that out.

One issue: When I plug my s4 into my PC, it recognizes it as a portable media player, and doesn't let me browse any of the storage. My laptop does. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I'm running Win7 64 bit.

Thanks!

I'm using MX Player and it worked well for my trip down to Mexico. Watched Angel Beats on the way down and back.

I've seen that sometimes on Win 8. What I've done to clear it is to switch it on the phone from media mode to camera mode and back. Not sure why that works. Just pull down your notifications from the top and click the USB icon to switch it.

Might try to get the latest Samsung drivers for their Android phones to see if that helps.

+1 for BS Player.
It can look up for subtitles online; if that's something people are interested in.

I am going to give a +1 for MX Player on my part. I really like the gesture assisted video controls (swipe left/right to move through the video, up/down to change volume and brightness depending on which half of the screen) and I don't remember it having any problems with videos, be it on my S4, N7 or the Xperia Tablet Z.

Time to look at BSPlayer though

I have never gotten along with gesture controls That's one of the reasons I gave up on MX Player. If you are not plagued with the same kind of double-sinister-hand syndrome, it's not a bad choice. When I remembered which gesture did what, it worked very nicely.

First idea worked like a charm! Thanks!

I use XBMC on my Note 2 all the time but bet it would be tricky if I didn't have the stylus. I also use it on my Shield and it is amazing there but it was built to be controlled by an xbox controller.

I mostly use it as a simple way to move through a video. BSPlayer has more or less the same gestures, but the scrolling only shows me a time stamp, while MX moves there right away and shows me the scenes in between. -> I'll stick to MX and Plex/XBMC for now.

Anybody else finding wonkiness with the updated Pocket Casts? Mostly around playlists not being followed.

I only have one playlist, and I take my podcasts and queue them into it manually. However, if I move things around in the playlist, sometimes it just ignores the new order and continues to play what the original order. I'm not doing anything different than I used to, but it's behaving differently.

Also, I'm not sure if it's related yet or not, but if I'm in my audiobook player, it will sometimes just stop randomly. If I hit my headphone button or a play button on a bluetooth speaker, Pocket Casts takes over and plays instead of the audiobook player. Generally when this happens, the lock screen is also kind of doing some flash thing like something is trying to take focus of it until I unlock it. Not sure it's doing it every time or not. So it might be unrelated to Pocket Casts, or it might be Pocket Cast trying to do something with it's lock screen widget that's taking over the audio app.

Hadn't noticed either of those, but I did notice that when I hit download and started playing as soon as the play option became available, it ended the podcast when it got to that point. Not too big a deal since I have most set to auto download, but was still annoying.

Pocket Casts has generally been working fine, at least with regards to adding podcasts to a queue.

I have noticed, however, that Pocket Casts keeps giving me "Unknown" for the podcast and the podcaster on the lockscreen. The text info is still sent over Bluetooth to my car, so I know the information still exists: it just isn't propagating onto the lockscreen.

I dunno. They'll fix it.

My keyboard of choice, Swype, is free on Amazon today along with a bunch of other stuff.

After the Pocket Cast update I just got, it's now showing one podcast in the bottom play bar, while actually playing another in the queue.

*slap forehead*

Hopefully another update soon.

As a long time user of Doggcatcher, the interface is awful for the way I use it. It's usable, but annoys me to no end.

Just sayin'

How is it awful for the way you use it?

Veloxi wrote:

The interface is just not well thought out. I'm sure Pocket Cast will get fixed.

Put it this way, I own both, yet use Pocket Casts. If I liked Doggcatcher, I'd use it. Pocket Casts has it's quirks, but it fits my use case much better and the interface makes more sense to me.

Using Doggcatcher, I always felt like I was fighting against a programmer who got it to do a lot of cool stuff, but had little UI design sense.

We've gone over the various podcast apps in this thread over and over, and I've probably described my issues over and over.

Glad you like Doggcatcher. Enjoy it. I even reinstall it every so often to see if it's been cleaned up, but it's not for me.

Fair enough, was just curious is all.

Veloxi wrote:

I'd have to reinstall it and set up a few playlists to remember exactly all my complaints, but I think I've probably listed some of them in here. Problem is you can't search by a user name/post to find all my posts where I've complained.

And to be fair, Pocket Casts got to be really crashy for a long time prior to the 3.0 update on my old phone, and that's why I eventually bought Doggcatcher. So I'm not going to say I'd never go back, but as of 4 or 5 months ago when I last looked at Doggcatcher, it hadn't really cleaned up things that bugged me.

Mobisystems OfficeSuite 7 (all your MS offiice needs) is today's Amazon Free App of the Day.

Haven't gone back through all the pages, and didn't see anything with the site search, but I found out about Magic Plan via HN yesterday. Needed a rough floorplan of the living room to help my wife arrange furniture, and rather than move and climb over stuff and fool with the tape measure, I was able to generate a PDF with pretty accurate measurements by spinning around in place and clicking a few buttons.

Hey guys. So I was tired of not having a tablet, and bought a cheap Asus Memo HD 7 to hold me over until I finally had enough money for a really good expensive one. So far I have been loving this thing. Now I will probably end up buying an iPad further down the road (I have an iPhone and already have a bunch of iOS apps) so I am going to try and not spend too much on Android apps because I might only use this thing for a year or so and then pawn it off to one of my siblings.

Still there are a few things I know I will probably want to get. I was hoping you can all save me some time and let me know what the best apps are for stuff like Twitter, multi protocol IM client, podcasts/music player, comic book reader etc.

I already found mxplayer for video, and bsplayer, not sure which I will stick with. I noticed in mxplayer their HW+ has a freezing issue when you use the slider to try and fast forward or rewind your program. So I am using software mode for the shows I watch with low volume to get that audio boost feature.

Other then that, I have no idea. Is there an app that will allow me to keep track of apps I want and notify me when they are on sale?

Pocket Casts seems to be the consensus podcast app, but it's not free.

Someone here suggested Bsplayer and it worked well for me when I needed it.

Good luck!
