World Cup 2010

Missed most of the first 45 minutes, but looking good so far. What did I miss?

One of the most embarrassing goals I've ever seen. I include my days as a 10 year old playing in a Rec league.

He looked great in training.

If you guys think the USA aren't going to be thrashed, you must be high.

Hope you enjoyed the goal at the 40 minute mark!

My brother and I totally freaked out celebrating.

I'm so glad I'm not Green right now. Messing up like that will stick with you for a loooong time!

Lucky break keeps the US alive in this one. How will they come out in the second half?

Wait, we have a soccer team? And why do the announcers keep calling it football? They're not even wearing helmets!

Good game so far, poor goalies, when they're not being kicked in the face they screw up and embarras themselves.

To be fair, Dempsey wasn't even really contested on that shot. Green screwed up big time for sure, but a little help wouldn't have hurt.

If all goes normally, England will still win. The US team hasn't been able to break England's defense yet. That goalkeeper... everyone has it's moments, I guess.

Well England's captain was wide open from 15 feet when he made his goal. They all count.

Edit for timing.

^^^ that adds a new dimension.

Talking with folks in the summer league, they're excited for World Cup and would probably follow it a lot more if it had more TV coverage in the US.

Soccer has a long way to go. According to something I saw on the net, MLS games pull in 250k to 400k viewers. That's less than reruns of Japanese anime on Cartoon Network. Hopefully it keeps growing.

What's ironic about that goal is that ESPN had a 10 minute special on Dempsey during SportsCenter today where he mentioned that he often visits his deceased sister's (young tennis phenom who died unexpecedly from a brain hemmorage) grave and sometimes he jokingly asks her for a little divine intervention in pushing through a few goals. I got chills when it snuck into the net.

If Green was South American he'd likely be shot for that.

Yeah that's what the ABC/ESPN announcer said. One of the most embarrassing goals he's seen, at any level, much less world cup play.

No wonder England had concerns about their keeper. Apparently all we need to do is puts shots on goal.

It doesn't help that the message of ESPN and ABC's coverage is that Americans should only watch the US games for reasons of nationalism, and not bother with the rest of them for the sake of actually enjoying the sport.

That's one of the reasons I was picked USA to score 3.

Are we now going to see Lenny Kravitz...er, David James... in goal?

Your goalie is doing a good job. Most dynamic game yet imo.

USA's defense is still sloppy, but they're looking more organized this half.

Currently, the english team isn't playing much better than the US team. Wouldn't be surprised, if the US secures this one with a lucky goal in the last few minutes.

Findley got murdered. Murdered I say.

And now Dempsey as well. Both of those were only yellows? Really?

Fun fact: like in Football, offense scores the goals, but defense wins the game.

Almost 1 - 2 for the VS lol

Altidore posting it. ::shakes head::

Green almost one up-ed himself. *snicker*

Looks like England has decided a draw is sufficient.

Tie! And I'm 4 out of 5, but still no scores right. Haha.

Now can we in America go back to not caring about soccer?

Weaksauce english performance. Good game from the US guys though. Fighting spirit the whole game. Lots of interceptions.

Graceful result for the English. Good, but unfortunate for the US americans.

Very good result for the US.

Congrats to the US for holding off England. Only on couter-attack did England provide danger.
