Darksiders Catch-all

Picked this up over the weekend for a cool $20. It's great! Only 2 horus in and it feels like it's going to be a very long game. The navigational challenges bother me a little and the game is a bit confused on what it wants to be. I feel like it is about one level away from being a very fluid melee-action game like Bayonetta or Castlevania: LoS. On the other hand, I feel like I should be collecting more loot and "leveling up".

I love the art style and the sense of epic scale. For all its simplicity, the combat system still quite fun. Look forward to playing more.

It's really a Zelda game with a more fleshed out fight system.

Just started the game after picking it up during the summer Steam sale. The combat is pretty old school and satisfying. My only real gripe with the game is that I had to use a stinking hex editor to get the game to play in 6048x1080 after doing some googling. Kind of a pain, but it works fairly well.

That's a gripe now?!!

I don't even recognise PC gaming anymore....

Those are some nice panoramics. I just realized that I have to decide if I want to buy the sequel on Steam or on a disk this time. New possibilities all around.

Well, it was rather satisfying when the fix worked perfectly.

In the latest podcast ____ said he did not like this game at all. His one sentence's tone made it sound like Darksiders was one of the worst things he has played.

Made me sad.

Who?

I just bought this a week ago and have put in about 6 hours so far.

It's awesome. Totally, totally awesome.

For some reason, that I cannot fathom, Darksides is extremely polarizing, at least on GWJ. I'm not sure how much of that is due to legitimately different views, and how much is just the meme that sprouted up around it.

I think a lot of the complaints about it are likely due to the game not meeting someones expectations. It is "just" a Zelda clone, and except for a few additional mechanics, also lifted from other games, isn't much more than that. Someone who thought it was more than that might be disappointed.

Except that I'm not a huge fan of the Zelda games, but I loved Darksiders (apart from some minor but frustrating camera issues). It's the great over-the-top comic-booky atmosphere that I love. I really enjoyed the gameplay too!

I think it's just one of those games, you love it or you don't.

And I love Zelda games and absolutely hated Darksiders. The gameplay was my main problem with it.

I loved darksiders but I think a lot of people were turned off by the art style and the slow start. You don't get new weapons and combat options and it does get Zelda-y until a few hours in.

Should I chime in here?

WHO ELSE!?

I had quite mixed feelings. The gameplay and combat ain't great, there's a bit too much pointless traveling about, the puzzles are pretty mundane until the portal bit, the art style is too overwrought, the dialogue and plot are terrible, the whole ting feels like something teenage-me would designed and thought was uber-cool yet I lots and lots of fun with it. Go figure.

I did play it after coming off of completing Final Fantasy XIII so it was probably some kind of aintidote to the that terrible long slog of tedium.

Those feelings don't sound very mixed.

It sounds more like he should have hated it completely, but because of the circumstances, he somehow didn't.

Confused feelings, sounds to me.

It was good.

Black Throne and Collect-a-thon really dragged for me, though. The combat really made the game worth it for me.

Do you have an opinion on it?

I enjoyed it for what it was. Then again, I wasn't really expecting much.

So, finally after all the jokes about this, and it sitting in my pile since one of the previous Steam $5 deals... I fired it up today. Seems pretty fun so far. Just a couple areas in, but enjoying the brawling, got a 2nd weapon now, and a couple extra moves from the store, and just feel like I'm generally kicking ass so far. Probably should have played on Apocalyptic after all as I've only died twice so far. Since I'm playing on Steam, I'm not as worried about achievements though. If it had ever been $5 for PS3, it might have been fun to try and platinum. Oh well.

So far so good.

I found $15 via gamefly over a year ago to be well worth it to play on the PS3. $5 on a current console is a tough order to fill. I doubt I'll ever get a platinum trophy in any game. There's always something I don't find worth my time.

Since I did have fun, I checked last night and it's $20 at Amazon, with $17 something for used, so a little better than Gamestop there. And for once no DLC, online pass, or other nonsense on a console game, so I could buy it used. Best price for most of my PS3 games has been $10 on some Amazon deals. If this ever hit that I might be tempted to double-dip.

Even the PC version on Amazon is only $6.99 right now though. Still annoying that there's that $10 surcharge for console games. Oh well. Not sure trophies are really worth it, but this does seem easy to 100% if I wanted.

Yeah, gamefly used game sales were really good to me soon after I got my PS3.

All I can say is f*ck the Dark Throne level.

All the fun I was having with this game has nearly been sucked away by this one area. Ugh.

Agreed. That´s the level that made me quit playing the game on my friend´s 360 some time ago. I then picked it up again when I finally bought my ps3, and decided I couldn´t let that dumb-ass level beat me, so I went and finished it. Amazing how developers always have that ONE AREA that will make us either quit, or rethink about starting a new game. It seems every game has it. Dark Throne is it for this game.

Hope you endure and continue. Darksiders II looks amazing so far.

One of the most annoying things for me is something that shouldn't have been. After you get the new item in Dark Throne...

Spoiler:

The portal gun basically. And then there's those spinning blocks over a gap, which you have to portal, let them spin, then portal the other. Mostly because of playing the game Portal I assumed portals worked the same way. So I was trying to jump through the portal, and shoot the next spinning block in midair. War kept turning around, bouncing off the block, shooting the other way, falling to his death. It was driving me insane. Probably took me 5-10 minutes of attempts to get across the gap. Then I came back to that room on the way out. So after a couple more failed attempts I checked a FAQ. Lo and behold you can shoot portals through other portals!

So I thought maybe part of the frustration was my own doing, making the puzzle harder than it had to be. But then I got to the next room exactly like that. And there's a fight that starts when you get across the gap. And if you die, you have to solve the puzzle again. It doesn't let you respawn right at the fight, but back at the "room" entrance. That one pissed me off repeatedly as that was a very difficult fight, with 5-6 "LT" enemies. Things that are usually only 1-2 per fight.

And the respawn/save/load system continued to piss me off the whole stage. Thinking that it would let me respawn at the top door when I returned to the main room, I loaded one time after I fell, but nope it started me at the bottom, not at the entrance I had entered from like almost every other room in the game had. Other times if I saved/loaded it would start me back before an elevator that I had already went up/down, which you'd think would be a new room. This happened a couple times on the boss fights in each section, having to go up an elevator again instead of just restarting the fight. The whole level has been extremely wonky about save points.

And I did have one game crash when opening a chest on the level. Made me have to repeat a good 5-10 min of puzzles since it crashed during the autosave of opening the chest apparently. Because when I tried to load the autosave it took me back over an hour of progress somehow. Good thing I do manual saves every 5-10 minutes, or I'd have really been pissed. Probably would have quit the game if I'd had to replay all of that tower.
