EVE Online - Catch All & new meat check-in

Pages

Ok, I did search and all existing threads were pretty old so I think the question deserves a new one. Anybody still playing? As has been well covered this game looks intriguing and is very intimidating. Started the 14 day trial today and still working through the tutorial.

*edit*

As a friendly service to the cool people still playing the game, here are the GWJ chat channel details. Say hi and get the GWJ gift basket, which make the early game way more pleasant.

Channel is called 'GWJ' Password - 'gwjeve'

There are a few of us.
We have a channel: GWJ
The password is either evegwj or gwjeve, no one can ever remember

EVE has a reputation of being very noob-unfriendly. The tutorial system has gotten better but after that you're still dropped into a very deep and very shark infested pool without being pulled in any specific direction, which can be intimidating. One must-have utility is EveMon. My tip for using it is browse through some ships and find one you'd like to fly, whether its an advanced scout ship, a battleship bristling with guns, or a mining barge with high end mining lasers. EveMon has a bunch of pre-set loadouts available that you can browse through. You find one you like and click the button that sets all of those skills up in your queue. When you're looking at your queue you can press another button to set the learning skills that will speed up the whole queue (and show you how much time you'll save that way)

It will also be good to find one skill that will take a fairly long time to train that you can set up whenever you're going to be logging out for a while, overnight or whatever, so you're not going to miss out on any training time.

Here's a link to 10 links for a new EVE pilot

We are around. Join the GWJ channel, and feel free to chat me up if you have any specific questions. I am sort of a noob myself, but I am in a corp of people who know what is going on. If you need help with missions or whatever in Gallente space, I'm happy to help.

polypusher: it is gwjeve

Thanks guys. Polypusher that app looks very handy.

Can you cue up skills in the game?

You can't, unfortunately. When you select a skill, you're left improving nothing for the minutes, hours, days it takes for you to get back and turn on another one. Thats why I like to keep a long skill noted so I can switch to that if Im not going to have a chance to maintain it for a day or two.

Any progress you had in a skill you stop early is saved, so you lose nothing there.

Ok, luckily I can log in at work so that is helpful.

See you all in game.

I'm usually on Euro time, so keep an eye out.

Yep, there's a shortage of capsuleers around here, but we're fairly active. Holler in the GWJ channel, let us konw you're new and there are usually hookups awaiting.

In the way of pointers, here's mine:

1. Skill Training is your grind. Everything else is just fun. So, to ensure you get the most fun out of the game, you are advised to do some unfun stuff up front, in training learning skills. Learning skills increase your attributes, which affect your training time. There are two ranks of them, rank 1 & rank 3. Getting them to l4 rank 1/l3 rank 3 is the minimum advised. If you get 5/4 right off the bat, you'll be in very, very good shape down the road.

2. EVEMon and EFT. Great programs, get them from official sites which can be found on the EVE-Online forums. Google for both of em and you'll be in good shape. Beware though, they're a game in themselves.

3. Find a good Corp. EVE is best played with other fun people. There are plenty of newbie training corps(EVE University is foremost in my own mind /shameless plug), but there are certainly others(not as good). And yes, I am a member of the Uni.

Cool, busy training the Learning skills atm, but the Clarity skill book is waaay expensive. Busy with what is achievable at the moment and doing some of the early agent quests.

I did one that was out of my league and had to warp my ass out of there very fast.

Busy running EVEMon, and I have downloaded EFT but haven't started using it yet. You're right, EVEMon is really fun to play with.

I'll look up EVE University.

I'm in game as Zula Jamari.

I am also regularly on under the guise of Silene E'lin

You'll be doing a lot of that. Brace yourself.

Strange, but I just got the urge to re-up my account for a month today. So look for me now and then in the next few weeks. Name is Montalas.

It's really weird, because I don't generally like games that involve work. But for some reason I'm having a ball with this, it may not be a game I play for a year continually, but I do see at least a few months of play.

So much for vanquishing my pile....

Oh lord, Monty's back !!

Nothing all that dramatic. No need to lock up your exotic dancers and spiced wine just yet. Just wanting to check out the new graphics update and game features. See if I can approach things a little more rationally than mining roids 5 hours a day like I was.

Anyway, hopefully catch you all online soon!

Current exotic dancer census - 160, across 3 stations.

Hell, I need to make 10 mill a week to keep them in lipstick, shoes and soft drugs, though some of them have shown surprising aptitude at keeping my ships and assorted hardware catalogued and available for use.

Oh FFS. I was so ready to break out the credit card and PAY for this game, until I discovered that it is unplayably laggy on weekends. What is up with that?

Warping takes forever, then I get disconnected. When I eventually manage to log in again, there's my capsule hanging in space.

Thanks to generous ISK donations from goodjers the ship is replaceable, but I have to wonder what the point is.

I'm actually so pi**ed off right now I'm considering going back to Lotro, or even trying WoW.

Where are you at that you're having issues that bad with lag? The only place I can think of that gets that bad is Jita, and if you're around there, it's because there's nearly 500 people in system ALWAYS.

I have been playing as well.... only 4 days old, but I am really enjoying this.

I've never had any lag issues with EVE except in massive player situations (like a hundred ships around a gate) You might want to make sure your firewall isnt blocking EVE or anything like that.

Ok, the uncanny accuracy with which you hit that nail on the head mollifies me a little. So I need to buy a cheap ship to GTFO and never go back again?

*edit* ok, been given a new n00b ship I see, but my Eidetic memory skill book is space dust. grrrrr

Yeah, there are a few hard lessons to learn in EVE and one is: stay out of Jita if you value your sanity. It's hard for us Caldari because it's such a big trade hub, but only head in to pick up stuff you have bought there during off-peak hours. Late at night or in the middle of the afternoon during the weekdays works best.

Yeah Jita is a big no no in peak hours.
Apart from that you should very rarely encounter lag.

At least until you join a big fight in 0.0 space, then the jita lag looks like a movie.

Jita's ok, but like Montalban said, avoid it during peak hours. We'll hook you up on the lost stuff though

It's cool, I've calmed down. The only thing of real value I lost was that skillbook, which I replaced earlier so I could train it. The big trick now is remembering what I'd put on my Merlin.

I'll be on tonite, fella - i can replace the merlin and whatever mods you had on it from stock, I suspect. Shoot me an evemail.

Thanks, I'll try get on tonight. It's Survivor night though

You would have been out of luck anyways - server was still down at 10pm GMT as they deployed the latest patch. It's up now, though.

I know, I was trying to log in go get a new skill going. Eventually gave up and went to bed, but my training schedule is behind by about 10 hours.

First lesson of EVE patches: They're always longer than planned, even if only by a couple hours. The Trinity 'Boost' patch ran over by two days, both of which I lost.

Since then I've lost probably another 5 or 6 days of going to bed forgetting that I had a short skill running and hadn't started the longer one yet. It sucks, but it's not the end of the world either. Live and learn.
