After criticizing this show for the first 5 seasons (and I mean acerbically and condescendingly) my wife and I watched season 6 to see what it was all about, and were immediately hooked. If you have never watched the show, watch an episode (of the actual show, not the tryouts - that is just a freak show that will make you lose faith in your fellow man). It is actually a pretty entertaining show, that really focuses in on talent. Simon Cowell, who has an unfair rep for being a bit of a prick(he is not, he just tells it how it is), is fantastic and brutally honest.

I will cheer for your friend - she has a fantastic voice, just needs to lighten up a bit:)

I think she's getting there. She's always been super shy (It took us years to convince her to do this). She really needs to see this as a memorable experience and have fun, but I think she's still viewing it as the only chance to give her little sisters a valid shot at life. I see where she's coming from, but it'll hurt her in the long run if she doesn't lighten up a bit.

Is there any way to vote or anything without actually watching it? I'd like to support your friend but can't tolerate the show.

I'm definitely going to look into that.

Generally you can text vote for a person (at a cost), and sometimes you can go to a website to vote. Post the voting info here when you can casual, and any timelines for voting. Good luck to your friend.

First off, no apologies for American Idol allowed. People on Tar Intarwebs like to scoff -- and I'm sure this thread will attract its fair share of detractors, too -- but there's a reason 30 million people tune in every week to AI: It's just plain sugar-coated AWESOME. (IMHO, if you can't revel in the fun that is American Idol, then Eurovision would break your soul in half.)

Now: How cool is it that we have an honorary Goodjer on the show? Woo hoo! I liked her before, and now I'll be rooting for her now more than ever.

This is a REALLY good year for talent, and Siobhan's got some cards stacked against her; namely, she has an unusual name and she didn't get as much screen time during Hollywood Week as other blonder, more guitar-playing girls. Also, I worry that she mistook the judge's advice about appearing too "old" by putting together some really bizarre outfits, rather than choosing a more youthful song. (If you can talk to S-Dawg, let her know that the American public tends to frown on legwarmers, even in an ironic sense. If your legs are cold, just wear pants.)

Still, she's super cute, she totally rocks the glasses, and oh yeah, she's got a KILLER voice. If she picks the right songs, she could really set herself apart. I wonder how she'd do with some Southern blues/70's rock? (Just no Whitney Houston; that's the kiss of death on AI Semifinals rounds.)

Well, by that logic, I can say that just as there is a reason why 30 million people tune in, there is also a reason why so many people on the internet (and in real life) like to scoff, too. Just because it's popular doesn't mean its not hugely flawed. But those debates are played out and boring at this point, so I see no need to rehash them - apart from saying that I like Eurovision way more than American Idol, mostly because I find the talent and music much more diverse. Plus, Eurovision gave us Abba. ABBA!

Flaws give my love something to stick to.

And DJ Bobo. Musicians these days might as well just give up and go home, because "Vampires Are Alive" will never, ever be topped.

Awesome response. I really like that line. You win!

Plus, I do agree with your original point - just because something is heavily criticized, doesn't mean you have to apologize for liking/posting about it.

Unless its Twilight.

I hate American Idol, but I hope your friend does well on it. If they put up a web vote I'll make sure and vote her up.

I skipped the last couple seasons but for no good reason gave this season a shot. How I will miss Thaddeus (Spelling). I do think that your friend has an amazing voice and definitely deserves her spot in the top 24. However, I'm torn as to where votes should go. Katie Stevens happens to live a few towns over who is also in the top 24. I don't recall anyone else from CT making it to the top 24 but then again I've missed more seasons than I've watched. I hope Siobhan does well but also rooting for my homegirl! (Ok, I did that to sound cool but I think I failed miserably). I want to go to one of those festivals when it gets really down to it and they have the contestants back at their hometown so I need Katie to do well

Haha she's always worn crazy outfits. She really loves that Ramones denim vest. They kind of let the contestants do their own thing before the last elimination, but I'm pretty sure now they're actually getting full on Hollywood treatment in the makeup and outfit department. Judging by the photo shoot they did, she looks a lot different (Like the picture above).

She also has been getting like zero screen time. They never showed her audition in Boston, and the first I saw her was in that stupid Lady Gaga song on Hollywood week day 2. Now that she can sing on her own and has more of a song choice, I think she'll do better. She is super cute though, if she wins I'm going to regret letting that one go for the rest of my life haha. It was hard enough when she broke up with me, it's going to be a lot harder to swallow when she wins. I still want this for her though, she deserves it so bad.

"People like blood sausage too, people are morons."

I'd hit it.

I mean, vote for it. Her. Vote for her.

Don't worry. Kelly Clarkson and Kris Allen both came to the semis with zero screen time (didn't even show their auditions), and look what happened to them. Also, David Cook pretty much had "Cannon Fodder" tattooed on his forehead when he first got to sing live, and, again, look what happened with him.

Perhaps in earlier seasons, zero screentime would have been the kiss of death, but this is Season 9. By now, viewers are used to finding a dark horse to love, and will tire quickly of the more over-hyped contestants. Especially in the post-Kris Allen Idol. Remember how much screen time Jasmine Murray got last year? Yeah, exactly.

And this year they've returned to the old format, where the semifinalists just have to make sure they're not in the bottom two during the semis, versus trying to be one of the top 3 vote-getters. So even if she slips up, she still has a chance to survive.

I don't remember casual saying she was under age

Anyway i don't watch either but all the girls in my house do so I'll see what i can do

Regardless of American Idol - (which is OK ethically after the try out area, but yes is funny ass fodder during) - Perhaps you could start up a donation fund or such for her to assist with "2 little elementary school girls by herself" so that she knows that in the world there are people who support good people. I'd toss $20 at it myself just to send her that message.

She only has a shot at winning if she learns to shine and let what she has show through, and that will not happen so long as she is thinking it is all that important. What is important is that she is giving those 2 kids a lesson which last forever. If they were in her shoes - what would she want for them? Let herself show that through and she will do well. If she can let her self enjoy what she is doing - then she is giving them what is real. It doesn't cost anything to enjoy what you love.
And regardless of wining or not - she will give them what they need for life... which isn't money.
All my opinion of course. But I know people in similar situations, (aka can't give the $'s , or have had bad parents), very close to me.

-Best of luck - and set up a help fund for her - bet she could get $100 from this site just to help with some of the costs.

Very Sincerely,
Ed

Sometimes you just have to do good things for people that deserve it, even if they are over 18.

I wish her luck. Hopefully she picks a song that has some type of build up to a high note and showcases her range.

I bet it wouldn't be if anybody else could sing like Whitney. I'm just sayin'.

Yup. All those that crash and burn on Whitney (or Celine) is because while they may be able to sing, Whitney and Celine can sing, plus they can project and they have a presence.

I'm not a huge fan of either, although I do recognize their talent. Aside from my dislike, I think it's just plain bad strategy to pick Whitney or Celine in the semis, as a) like you said, you simply can't compare to the original and b) singing one of their songs -- even well -- automatically ages you by about 20 years -- unless you're 16, in which case it makes you look like a toddler trying on Mommy's high heels.

Also, in the semis, when contestants can choose almost any song they want, and they pick a Whitney song? Serious lack of creativity there.

Kris Allen and David Cook demonstrated brilliant song selection throughout the competition, but particularly in the semis (Kris singlehandedly made the mostly obscure Michael Jackson song "Man in the Mirror" cool again, judging by how many people sang it during Hollywood week this year). S-Dawg may be able to pull it off, too. Casual, what's her normal wheelhouse of music?

I would watch American Idol if they all sang Kate Bush songs.

She worships the Ramones, and she listens to a lot of Punk Rock. She's actually in a band with some other good friends of mine, but her drummer got cancer and they don't play much anymore. They did play a more classic rock style though. As for what she sings, her song choice will probably be everywhere. Her background is definitely theatrical (That's how I met her), and the most beautiful song I've ever heard her sing is her rendition of over the rainbow when we did Wizard of Oz. I really have no idea what to expect.

Only reason i watched it was because i know Michael Lee and wont care about it again until another friend makes it in. I've had one friend that also made it right up to the rounds for the tv show just to lose out.

Good luck for yours.

I thought her rendition of "Wicked Game" was quite good tonight.
She has an absolutely beautiful voice.

I think she has some serious potential.

She was my favorite from tonight by far. Love the song - both the Chris Isaak and H.I.M. version

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JF5Uj...

S-Dawg played it quite savvy tonight. Excellent choice of song -- she picked a perfect way to stand out amongst all the blond, coffee shop-style "quirky" singers. I'll admit, I was a little worried when I saw that she was preceding Bowersox, but she really made Crystal look flat, even paint-by-numbers (quite a feat, considering how many instruments that girl was slinging).

Also, she looked fantastic (though my inner Stacy London wonders if heels would've killed her), and she sang as if she really believed every word out of her mouth. Sioban was definitely one of the best of the night.

It's still early on, but I think it looks like our honorary Goodjer may actually have a shot. I'll be rooting for her!

I think everyone can still vote, not totally sure. If so text vote to 5710 or call 18664365710. I agree and think she did amazing. I really hope she gets this! I'm glad you all liked her!

Oh here's a link for anyone who missed it!
