Neptune's Pride, free browser-based MoO/Spaceward Ho geared toward Diplomacy

Grats firesloth! I'm just surprised Latrine ended up in 3rd since we were tied with the number of owned systems at the end there.

Regardless, thanks to IUMogg for starting that one!

Wow; this 12 person game feels a lot different than the 8 person game...

Bah I got shut down before I even got started. Sad Panda. Still, can't really blame anything other than crappy placement/resource luck really. And a slightly devious ally:) Does anyone know if I can still log in and see whats happening once I lose my last system?

You should be able to do so. In fact, if you don't the AI will 'take over' your empire. Which makes no sense!

I'm up for another game. I can see there is no way I'm placing in this one. You're right, your starting position did suck, we could try and go for a more symmetrical map next go around.

I don't mind, it's all part of the fun really - in a game of this size, someone has to be in that position!
Cool that I can still log in though.
I'd be up for another game if someone was get the credits for a private game. I can't really cough up for them myself right now

Yah, there is a symmetrical map that gives everyone essentially the exact same starting position. It doesn't look realistic but it is very fair. I thought about starting our current game with that map but decided against it. Probably should have. I would consider starting a new free game (I have the credits) with the symmetrical map. Would like the current game to run its course a bit more before doing so.

Yeah, good game to all there. I didn't even know getting 2nd or 3rd place rewards you with credits.

Also, yeesh: http://twitpic.com/1j7trk/full
Our current game is about that big, I wonder if we're going to have the same problem.

Hey gang, sorry I went MIA in the Goodjer Beatdown game. My modem died last Thursday and I just got back online tonight. I tried to sneak on at work but the firewall is pretty tight and I couldn't get on here or the NP site. Anyway, I'm assuming the AI took control for me at some point, is it worthwhile for me to jump back in?

I didn't even know 1st gave you credits. Nice.

I'd be willing to start a game and have the credits. However, it'll have to wait about another week or so. Too much going on, and I'm already in 2 games!!

O yea, it's just getting out of the "grabbing territories" phase into the "lets kill some mofos" phase. You're still in it.

I get so confused with different tags in here versus on NP and with several different games on-going. Wow.

Two questions at those people, who have already hosted games:

1. How long did it take from buying the credits via PayPal to the point where they were actually credited to your account?
2. If I start a 50 credit free game with friends, do I get a "start game now" button, to start at a convenient time (e.g. sunday night) or will it automatically start when the last player has joined?

Jesus, and I thought a fleet of 55 ships was big! It's my first game y'know
Also, I didn't even understand there was an open chat channel until I saw this image! I'm in a pub game and nobody has said a word, it's all private messages. But I guess it's more interesting if you're playing with people you know...
One thing I noticed is that NickB in that game has a LOT more industry than economy, and he's leading. I'd have thought good economy was a necessary ground to upgrade planets and thus get a lot of ships... is it beacuse high levels of economy cost a lot and thus take long time to get profitable? Where do you guys stop upgrading that?
All in all, I'm having a blast, even though the 8-player map I'm in is a bit cramped and doesn't leave much space for weird alliances and deals. I'd love to participate in a huge GWJ game later!

The credits were deposited pretty much instantly. i think the game just starts once it's full.

Industry produces ships, 2 ships per point of industry per day iirc, so someone focusing on industry is planning on going to combat fairly early. Or really wants to turtle.

For economy, just hit the little link that lists upgrades in lowest to highest and upgrade accordingly. For industry do the same, but you need to take into account the location of the star, if it's too far from the action moving your fleets takes forever. Science is like economy, place it on the cheapest planets possible and I try keep pace, or stay slightly ahead, with the other players when it comes to science upgrades.

And now that I'm not playing against anyone here I will share this handy resource for combat.

Well, I was hoping that in this game since it's just goodjers there would be a little more on the diplomacy side but I guess that being nice just makes you a bigger target when everything explodes.

Another thing about industry vs. economy: When someone takes a system, they keep whatever industry (and science) upgrades were on the planet, but the economy is nuked. (i.e. a 2 2 1 planet turns into a 0 2 1 planet and the conqueror gets $20.)

So when two empires are fighting, industry is going to be changing hands back and forth while any economy near the border is going to get repeatedly burned.

So doesn't that make it an even worse investment?

A bit. It's a question of whether you can defend it. No economy means no industry, because you use cash to buy industry. No economy means no science, because you use cash to buy science. etc.

Something to remember is that since it gets burned to the ground, it gets cheap again. On a planet with good resources, your first level of economy costs a bit more than $10. That's a worthwhile investment if you're sure you're going to hold the planet for at least two turns.

Also, it's not as painful to have the enemy take and hold a system that had good economy as it is for them to take and hold one with good industry. Losing a good economy means you lost that future long-term income, and they gained a one-time cash bonus. Losing a good industry means you lost that future long-term ship production, and your enemy gained that long-term ship production. If you can't take that industrial system back, that could be a lot worse.

Finally, there's a bit of a geometric growth thing here. Having a good economy lets you spend money on more economy to have an even better economy. Having all of that money coming in means you can build lots of other things—like tons of science, or more industry on planets that already have a lot of industry.

Well, I was hoping that in this game since it's just goodjers there would be a little more on the diplomacy side but I guess that being nice just makes you a bigger target when everything explodes.

I hope theirs no actual hurt feelings, it's a game based around killing your neighbors, eventually it was going too happen. My decision was motivated by the fact that the top three players were located next too, above and below me. Cutting off that 5 star sector you have next too me allows me some breathing room if Blue or Purple make a push, Blue had a stronger military and unless Purple had expansion room, he'd want too move down into my territory. Blue took Muliphein and Dschubba which is the doorway top my sector. I'd rather be Italy then Poland.

Of course not, it's just a game. I just have to remember not to be so trusting.

Now, I could be persuaded too call back my fleets for some gifted technology...

NEVER!
I may whine, but I never surrender!

You and your terrorist allies *cough certis and firesloth* will crumble. CRUMBLE I SAY.

Huh? Keep me out of this. I...wait, what's your tag at NP? I suppose I could be part of it. Still, keep me out of open discussions of anything I'm doing underhandedly inNP.

O I thought you were part of the Fedora/Certis powerhouse. You came through on our deal, so your fine with me, just keep yourself from scaring me and we'll be fine.
