Android 12 lock screen is nuts. What drunk programmer thought time displayed vertical made sense? Or not to give a f*cking option... Ugh
12
10Right now according to my phone.
I saw this and was confused at first, and then it kind of immediately went away.
Turns out it only displays that way when there's no notifications. Once a few apps started, things like Blockada's persistent notification made it display differently, with the time displayed normally at the top.
Not quite a "fix"... but having at least 1 persistent notification is the less annoying option at the moment, IMO.
I thought they had that mode for a long time (just not default).
It being default and impossible to disable or change is kind of the annoying part, in this case.
Yeah I found an article with that workaround. Usually try to clear my notifications but just leaving some open is working for now.
I've long turned ad blockers off. It stinks, but I figure they've gotta make money somehow...
Google has plenty of money. I don't feel bad for them. Creators make more from sponsors than ad revenue anyway.

I wasn't even considering the Pixel until I saw the price and bundle with YouTube Premium/Music which I already pay for. I would have put up with the rounded edges of the Pro, but Android 12 still doesn't have a usable desktop mode. I use Dex daily on my S10+, so I just can't give up that functionality. I guess I'm stuck waiting for the next Samsung...
Out of curiosity what do you use Dex for? I have an S20 but never really thought of a use case for it.
I have a NexDock so I haven't used my Windows laptop in about a year. There hasn't been anything I couldn't do on it so far. Everything these days can be done in an app or browser window. Anything with lots of typing, or when I want to multitask, or watching videos on a larger screen.
OK, so you are using it as a laptop replacement. That makes sense but currently wouldn't work for me because of some of the Windows apps I use and my tendency to keep tons of apps running.
Yeah, it isn't for everyone. I do as much as I can in the browser, so I only use apps as a last resort. But it means I have an average of 30+ tabs open all the time...
Anyone know if there is a way in Android to turn the wifi antenna on and off automatically based on GPS location? I'd like for it to turn on when I get home and turn off when I leave. You can set it to automatically switch to mobile data when there is no or poor wifi, but that doesn't turn it off.
Natively I have no idea but it can be done using tasker. You could also do something like if near network turn on or off wifi or something like if network is not near turn on or off wife. Or you could do if at gps location and near network turn on or off wifi. What I did though was use nfc tags that I scan with my phone when leaving or arriving home.
Tasker however isn't easy to use. There is a rather large learning curve but it is extremely powerful. I think it is the single best app on android.

If you go into Advanced Wi-Fi settings, there's an option for "Turn on Wi-Fi automatically" that turns it on where you connect frequently, then off at other places. It's kind of what you want, but you don't tell it where, it figures it out. You can review the list, but I don't see where you can delete places you don't want it to turn on.
Locale is another option. It has a lot of the same functionality as Tasker (though probably less) but it is much simpler to use. I noped out of Tasker when I realized I had to watch a video to learn how to use it. Locale is very intuitive.
You can set parameters based on location (within 1/2 mile), battery level, calendar, charging status, movement, orientation, or time of day. Then, based on the condition you set, the settings you can set are Bluetooth, Display brightness, Display sleep, volume, ringtone, wi-fi, and even wallpaper.
You can have multiple different profiles.
Is the advantage to turning off Wi-Fi when you don't expect to be in reach of a network to save battery life, or is there another reason to do it?
Just curious, it's not something I've put much thought into.
Thanks, all! And yeah, it helps with the battery. I get terrible mobile network reception at home but great wifi, and 5G most everywhere outside of my house. No reason for it to spend all day searching for a wifi signal when I'm not at home.
Something to keep in mind is that using an app like Tasker/Locale to toggle stuff off and on via GPS can, in and of itself, drain your battery faster than if you just left the WiFi on all day. Depending on what settings you choose.
I used to mess with Tasker a lot when the phones I had wouldn't last a full day of "real world" usage of calls/texts/social/etc. but these days uninstalling apps I don't use anymore and checking my phone to see if apps are running in the background seems to yield better results.
That dev is pretty responsive though! They also develop Join and various plugins for Tasker, and they've always been nice/responsive when I had any issues.

Tasker can also be teamed up with NFC if your phone supports it NFC for Tasker
I used earlier versions of this and I had a tag in the car for all the settings I wanted to change when I was commuting.
Playing Sudoku on the Pixel 6 Pro I notice a new UI element on the swipe menu... An overlay that lets me stream, optimize, and enable a framerate counter. I am playing Sudoku at 120 frames a second!
Got my Pixel 6 Pro 256 GB today along with a Spigen case. I liked the case I had for the Pixel 2. Amazing phone all around initially. I was using Republic Wireless as a carrier and paying around $30 a month. Not compatible, nor was Mint Mobile, so I switched to Google Fi flexible which looks like it's around $30ish a month for a few GB. I don't use much. Even though they said it might take a few business days, it took around 5 minutes. Don't need a SIM card anymore.
REALLY excited about the PRO camera. Having loved Nikon DSLRs, the Pixel 2 was the first phone camera I found acceptable, and it has served me well for many years now. I'll post any good images I get out of the Pixel 6 Pro.
I'm conflicted between the Pro and the regular. I like higher specs, but I really disliked the curved edges on a previous phone I had.
Yeah, what I read said the curved edge makes holding the Pro uncomfortable. So I'll be leaning towards the regular.
I just got my case for the Pro, which balances out the curves so they're not really noticeable to the touch, just visually

I had a case on my old phone too. But it just seems like such a useless feature. I really do not understand the reason for that type of design.

What type of case did you get?

One of the Google ones, the sage green; it's just a standard rubber covering, no extra gizmos or features

Unless you really need the higher refresh rate, wider selfie camera, or 4x zoom camera you aren't going to miss much. Most reviews I've seen say that unless you need the zoom get regular pixel. I think the higher refresh rate is something to consider (though I don't care about it in the least). The price difference is pretty substantial.

I loathe the curved edges as well. My only guess is that the curves add structural strength to the glass.
I like the curved edges on the pro for whatever reason. I went the a Spigen clear case through Amazon and love it. Had a similar Spigen case with the Pixel 2. Lots of cushion for when you drop it.
Fun thing I noticed today is the Now Playing History. Kinda neat! I can go through and see all the crappy songs I had to listen to at work that day.
Random pictures:
Here, I tried to test the 1x, 2x, and 4x telephoto zoom, but I'm not sure what exactly happened with that. The first two are at 6.81mm in the details which I think has to do with that zoom. The third is at 19mm which I think is the zoom and means the telephoto kicked in for that one. From what I read in the Ars Technica review, there is some funky stuff going on with that, and it sometimes goes with digital zoom over the telephoto.
And here are a couple of a Great Blue Heron fishing underneath our dock. They're at 4x and one is with additional digital zoom. They're both showing at being 19mm. You can see a lot of weird algorithmic corrections going on with the really zoomed in one. Reminds me of an emulator smoothing out a SNES game.
Anyways, seems like a better camera than the Pixel 2, but it still has limits, so it's an extremely solid phone camera!
