Help me enjoy X-Com

If all goes well and we make our way to Mars I may dig up the old cryostasis program that let you import your Ufo Defense squad into TFTD, then hte fun can continue. I've finished Xcom dozens of times, (I usually replay it about once a year) but I don't think I've ever finished TFTD or any of the 'lesser' sequels and clones.

I volunteer my services to the X-com army!

Coldstream, that writeup was front-page worthy. I really hope you find the time and energy to do some more.

Don't worry. I know lots of masochists.

But you are alive Quintin. You're a high ranking officer

Not an expendable hero like Podunk.

Oops, sorry, I confused Coldstream's game with yours.

And really, it's these properties that help make the game so brilliant. You're managing the global fight against an alien menace. Good men are going to die. Poor innocent boys who never should have joined up in the first place are going to die. Occasionally, even your grizzled old veterans are going to die.

And you know every one of them by name.

These guys are simultaneous some of the most disposable and some of the least disposable heros in all of gaming history.

And not only that, but some of them will be killed deliberately - by you. Someone has to eat the Sectoid Leader's plasma bolts so you can run in and capture him. I've never played another game where the failures were so awesome and the successes were so painful.

Sign me up for your armies!

I want to hear tales of my exploits.

Well I wouldn't be opposed to being a meat shield, as long as it's for a good cause.

Just a quick note: Damn you all to HELL!

Thanks to you I lost 3 hours of my life last night replaying X-com.

Grrrrr....

In all seriousness, this is a brilliant game and highlights how much Microprose being defunct sucks. Master of Orion (1 & 2), X-com (1 & 2), Darklands... These are the first PC games I played that hooked me big time.

Those who`re dreaming about Xcom face-lift should really take a close look at the UFO:Extraterrestrials Grayfiend mod, as was mentioned before. It`s nicely organized and customizable and really gives off the old Xcom vibe. Apart from one thing which is kinda dealbreaker for me - there`s practically no urban warfare due to the fact that original game has almost no urban assets, not like in Xcom.
Which kills the game for me - Xcom is all about intense fights in small towns, carefully searching dark alleys, rushing through suburban gardens to get to your endangered teammates, blowing fences, house walls and gas stations if need be. Sure, time to time you just hunt greens in forest but that`s not where the charm lays.

I've been convinced-- thanks for posting some specifics of why a gamer might be interested in this game-- that's what I was looking for. I wish I had picked it up when it was on sale. Not sure when, but this is on my radar to pick it up in the next 3 months or so. I know that's far out but I have so many damned games.... still, I'm convinced this is something I should just try.

A snowstorm and a even worse internet connection convinced me to start playing again. I forgot what an unforgiving bastard this game can be.

I went through and assigned roles to different soldiers as people discussed, and made sure my 'scouts', or people who I am actively trying to get killed, were in the front. I didn't count on the aliens being horrible shots and missing the front troops and taking out my supposidly protected troops in the back. So now I have officers that I actually don't want on missions.

Norfair will gladly fling them selves at the alien horde.

But I suspect there will be alien leaders with Psi powers, so this may get really messy.

If only you hadn't let your doctor get shot.

In the battle for Moscow Nightmare was the first to fall. A snakeman was waiting for us, and he didn't even make it out of the skyranger, If it's any consolation Tboon, you were a heavy

Well... Alien grenade at the base of the Skyranger on the Aliens first turn. no fatalities but nearly everyone is wounded, most of this turn will be just healing each other up. I'm guessing this is only going to get worse.

Uh oh... I think the aliens are taking the V approach. three Very Large craft have just simultaneously landed on Berlin, Budapest and Moscow (plus wherever else that I can't see)

I'm going to attempt to take out one (Probably Moscow, based on funding.) But I suspect there will be alien leaders with Psi powers, so this may get really messy.

There's your problem. Everyone knows Tboon is a pyro.

Wouldn't have helped him, I think the Snakeman was Nuean.

I always suspected he was not of this world.

Snakemen on a terror mission? Moscow can take care of itself.

It isn't so much about the snakemen as it is about what they bring with them. *shudder*

That's exactly what I'm saying. Floaters and Mutons, you fight to the last man. Snakemen and their pets? Fugetaboutit.

It's been awhile, Snakemen bring the Chrysalids right? Those guys... Oh man, it's unreal. Every time I go on a terror mission with those things in them I have to give it my all. It's like with Aliens or Zombies, if you miss a single one in the sweep they will take you all over.

Aetius was cut down by a snakeman he failed to kill, well... he won't need roads where he's going.

Nate G just got the promotion to Sergeant. I just hope not being able to intercede in Germany and Budapest won't hurt us too badly.

Psych, Norfair and Most just got the call up, once I dump the deadwood and wait for the next batch of potential recruits we'll have some more Goodjer fun. Although after what Certis did to me this morning I may name a bravery 10 soldier after him and send him to the front.

I've been trying my best to resist getting this on Steam, I should be saving my money for Christmas, and I have so many other, much more contemporary games to be playing. But this thread is making it difficult!

Edit: I am a weak, weak man.

Warhound went down, poor guy only made it to Sergeant, we'll posthumously promote him to Lt

Feeank got the promotion to Sergeant to take his place.

To be honest I am playing really well, and the casualties are still piling up.

War... War never changes...

Well it looks like I didnt' show up at morning muster. Which means I'm either pushing up daisies, and if so, I hope I went out in a blaze of glory, or else I heard about these stories of the damn Chrysalid things and their Snakemen masters and I jumped ship last mission.
