Help me enjoy X-Com

Wait, you're still using Heavy Cannons, Auto Cannons, and Rocket Launchers at this point?

Yeah. Blaster launchers are very powerful but they have limitations. Very rare ammo for starters. Plus even with the waypoint targeting they are not 100% accurate. And your troops accuracy skill doesn't factor into it. The main point and the reason I don't use them all the time is that they are extremely TU expensive. The rocket tank is in a way superior to the blaster hovertank just because it doesn't need 2/3 of its TUs to fire a rocket off. And while the launcher can pretty much launch from anywhere on the map and strike anywhere. The rocket tank is still capable of firing twice.

Heavy Cannons and Auto Cannons seem like they should be outdated the moment you get laser rifles. But I keep a couple around. HE ammo is great because it can make up for a near miss and hit stuff around corners. The AP and Incendiary ammo on the other hand I find quite useless.

The rocket launcher is VERY accurate when fired in aimed mode. It remains highly useful all the way to the end. Small rockets are like direct fire alien grenades. You can use them in spaces too small to allow for throwing like alien base corridors. Heavy rockets are even stronger than those carried by the rocket tank. Great for cracking open buildings.

IIRC large creatures like cyberdisks are vulnerable to explosive damage because they occupy 4 tiles in the game space and hence take 4X the damage.

Also, to be fair to Tamren he IS trying to get us killed off as fast as possible sending us in under equipped. On the upside with the difficulty bug the brain bug will be right inside the front door and the various xeno's protecting it will be wielding cotton candy and all day suckers

Hitting XCom where it hurts: the dental plan benefit package.

What gives? We're this close to sending the aliens packing and we're sitting around doing nothing? The Commissar wants to kick some ass!

He told me he was too busy making a hat or somesuch.

Aaand were off! This is the Big One. So the brakes are off for this mission. Were going to storm the place.

Mission begins. Our Avenger is huge and has 26 spots in total. First out the door are our two hovertanks. Nihilo floats off the ramp and circles west. Seems we landed in a corner, good start. Devil floats off the other side and immediately spots a sectoid in a nearby pyramid! His blaster launcher easily pops a shell through the window and the sectoid is obliterated before it can even scream! Our immediate LZ is secure so the rest of the squad spills out of the Avenger and takes up positions both on the ground and in the air.

New turn. Ominously we hear a lot of doors open and close, but see nothing in the darkness. Time for Nihilo to earn his pay. He sets off towards the south and... SKPEW. Plasma carves a crater into the ground just short of his right treat. Still no sighting, so he inches forward again... SKPEW. Another plasma bolt bounces off the turret armour, no damage. But still no sighting. Inching forward again a plasma bolt hits the tank head on, but the armour is tough and shrugs it off easily. Finally the enemy comes into view. Its a cyberdisk! Nihilo opens fire! Direct hit on the cyberdisk! But the disk is tough, and the splash of light from the plasma impact reveals a sectoid standing right beside it! Grubber, who is still back at the ramp opens fire and riddles the cyberdisk with yet more plasma. This is too much and the disk detonates, taking the sectoid with it. Well credit Nihilo an assist on that one.

Advancing south Tomayto rounds a corner and finds another sectoid. He shoots, but its a miss! No one else can get line of sight, so Quintin lobs a grenade. But the grenade lands closer to him than the sectoid. Nice work. Up north Devil rolls forward to an intersection between 3 pyramids and immediately spots 2 more sectoids. Khoram launches a rocket and hits the duo dead centre. Both targets are obliterated.

New turn. Quintins grenade goes off. The sectoid is downed by shrapnel but Tomayto's armour holds and the rest of the flak only raises sparks. Nihilo and Tomayto both come under fire from the darkness, but the plasma bolts miss them wildly. We advance south, but can't seem to locate their attacker. The rest of the men advance, salvaging supplies off the dead aliens. Milkman finally spots the sectoid in the distance and casually headshots it with a mid-air snapshot, nice.

New turn. Plasma fire splashes milkman and Tomayto. Another sectoid and cyberdisk! Tomayto shrugs it off. But milkman is hurt bad! They both open fire and the combined plasma and laser onslaught quickly downs both targets. Tomayto then uses his last TUs to patch up Milkman's leg. Egads, it seems some of the stray fire missed the two and hit Davet in the back. Davet is hurt pretty bad, so Rat Boy patches him up too. Everyone else meanwhile starts checking all the pyramids one by one. Finally Pignoli breaches into a small control room and blasts the last sectoid in the back. Area Secure.

Were in. If it seemed easy, don't be fooled. Its really a trap.

Mission begins. Right off the bat Pignoli and Vector spot a celatid and both of them open fire with plasma. Its a tough little rock, and holds out until the 5th heavy plasma bolt puts it down for good. No more sightings. Everyone spills off of the grav lift and advances in all directions.

New turn. A sectopod appears! Falchion is hit! His leg armour is badly damaged but none of the plasma made it through. More movement. Osh*t CRYSSALID! Ack kill it! Grubber shoots the cryssalid in the face. Its still up! So he tries again, and again. Finally the alien shrieks and collapses in a puddle of goo. Falchion advances past Grubber and revenges himself on the sectopod with heavy plasma. The robot collapses into a pile of scrap.

New turn. ACK! A cryssalid pops out of a door right in front of Prozac! But... it turns the wrong way and instead runs down the corridor... Turns the corner and... stabs Quintin in the back! Quintin is a zombie! Prozac and Edosan both open fire with cannon and heavy laser but can't land a hit on the cryssalid! Devil around the corner to the south tries to assist with his blaster launcher. But the round can't navigate the tight space and impacts a wall short of the target. Crap. Meanwhile down south Nihilo floats his way through an alien garden and spots another celatid. His plasma cannon makes a direct hit, but it takes Bighoppa and his laser rifle to finish it off.

New turn. Edosan is under alien control! He turns and blasts Prozac, but Prozac just looks annoyed and continues to fire at Quintin the zombie. Quintin is getting closer and closer... Down south Tamren rounds a corner and attacks an Ethereal. But as that one collapses to the ground another is revealed behind it! Everyone else down south finishes their sweep of the area and begins to move north.

New turn. Edosan is still under alien control... His cannon ran out of ammo so now he is running around gibbering madly. Osh*t another Cryssalid! This time up north! It appears around a corner and stabs Davet! Rat Boy immediatly attacks, rounding the same corner and downing a cryssalid in a hail of laser fire. He advances and... Oh Dear. Davet the zombie, and ANOTHER Cryssalid.

IMAGE(http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/7673/doomedratboy.png)

Down south. Tamren is under alien control! A blaster bomb streaks out of the shadows and obliterates Vector and Pignoli! Finally its our turn again. Prozac starts things off with a little heavy laser brain surgery on Quintin the zombie. Quintin the zombie immediately bursts into Quintin the Cryssalid. But Prozac is an able surgeon and blasts Quintin in the face, putting him down for good! Down south Tomayto searches for Tamren but only succeeds in finding another Ethereal. Some heavy plasma to the face takes care of it handily, but it reveals yet another one. Falchion moves up to join Prozac but runs into a celatid in the way and gets another kill.

New turn. Tamren panics. Edosan is under alien control yet again. And Khoram just went berzerk! Maybe giving him the rocket launcher was a bad idea. He immediately fires it at the wall beside him, directly into the back of Nihilos tank!. Nihilo is unhurt but Khoram is beat up! Rat boy unbelievably escapes harm after retreating around the corner. And advancing again finally puts Davet out of his misery in a hail of 9 lazer bolts. Tomayto, down south gets the jump on that Ethereal and guns it down from behind. Prozac and Mudbunny begin to advance on the control room...

New turn. Edosan is STILL under alien control. Blasting us all in the back with his cannon but accomplishing little. Tanglebones is also under alien control! Maybe I shouldn't have given him the blaster launcher... Rat Boy suddenly panics and runs forward directly at another Cryssalid! But Nihilo comes to the rescue, rounding a corner and downing the bug in a single shot from his plasma cannon! Nihilo rolls foward and spots a pair of celatids. Hi tank cannon downs the first. But Khoram and another 2 squaddies fail to down the second. Finally Devil flanks the alien from behind and backstabs it with a blaster round from his tank. Outside Area Secure. Time for the brain room.

New turn. Prozac and Mudbunny have the *ahem* honour of breaching the brain room. Just in case Mudbunny primes a grenade and puts it back on his belt. Prozac does the same, but being Prozac, primes a detpack instead.

New turn. Prozac breaches the brain room! Uh o....

IMAGE(http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/497/prozacbrain.png)

The aliens hiss in surprise! Prozac lets his laser do the talking and drills a neat hole through the centre ethereal's face! Mudbunny breaches the other lift and comes under fire. Two heavy plasma hits strike him point blank, but his armour takes the hits! Wounded but not out, Mudbunny returns fire, cutting down the second Ethereal!

New turn. Osh*t Mudbunny is under alien control! Mudbunny shoots Prozac! Prozac is down! The detpack explodes and annihilates the traitorous rabbit! Breach team 1 is down. The rest of us move in. Milkman moves to join the rest, and suddenly spots an alien! Its a Cryssalid right behind Rat Boy! It must have been knocked out earlier and just got up! Saving Rat Boy's bacon Milkman puts down the bug for good with his laser rifle. We all converge on the lifts...

New turn. Disaster! Tamren is under alien control! Tamren guns down Nevin and Feeank from behind! In the corridor outside Rat Boy attacks the traitorous Edosan and takes him out! Bighoppa goes berzerk and riddles the rest of the breach team with laser bolts!

This isn't going too well...

New turn. Rat Boy, Bighoppa and Falchion all panic. Tamren, Milkman and Khoram finally get up into the lifts and prime grenades...

New turn. Breach! Tamren storms up one lift and takes multiple plasma hits! They hurt, but aren't enough to stop him from shooting back. As he downs one Ethereal with a shot to the face Milkman rises from the second lift and downs the other in a hail of laser fire!

The brain is now at our mercy. Mwahahaha. Grubber bringing up the rear retrieves a blaster launcher off the dead Davet and brings it up into the brain room. Handing the launcher to Tamren he preps a grenade. Khoram and Grubber chuck detpacks onto the brain. Milkman and Tamren throw grenades onto the pile. Finally Tamren sets off the pile with a blaster round!

KABOOOOM! The brain is annihilated! Victory!

Prozac starts things off with a little heavy laser brain surgery on Quintin the zombie. Quintin the zombie immediately bursts into Quintin the Cryssalid. But Prozac is an able surgeon and blasts Quintin in the face, putting him down for good!

I may have died, but that made my day

Aha! Now I'm a hero. No one will remember that time I shot a dude in the back, right?

Prozac killing Quintin, just like we all knew was eventually going to happen.

Great success!! Butt pats all round.

Well, for those of us who survived.

Some of the deaths were messy, not putting my hands there!

Haha, that one was brilliant!

Least I went down fighting

Man, what did I do during all this breaching? I was doing so good and then I just disappeared. It seems like I was across the map, though.

Awesome! Shame I went down to friendly fire.

Sounds like I survived, despite being mind-controlled. Go me!

I wasn't panicking, I was running around to find other Chryssalids to shoot at.

I warned you.

There really weren't many of us left at the end. You were outside the brain room entry corridor along with Tanglebones, Rat Boy and a panicked Falchion. You guys were going to be breach team 3 in the quite possible case that breach team 2 turned up dead.

Did you still have a blaster bomb left? You could've flown it up the lift and guided it right into the brain. Or, if you had psi troops, you could have mind controlled one of the Ethereals and made him do all the dirty work.

I'm getting a vibe of Tamren marching through the X-Com base like Richard Todd at the end of 'The Dambusters'

"I've got some letters to write..."

I got scars from the last mission? Man, that's totally going to get me so many chicks.

In my experience blaster rounds have a tendency to bug out if you tell them to fly directly upwards. As well we did have psi capability but none of us were all that strong. Plus Ethereals in general are very resistant to psi.

Mutons on the other hand are very weak to psi. And make for great training and general puppet entertainment.

"Mudbunny Jr reporting for duty.

Mah Pa wuz killed by them thar aliens!! I wants me muh revenge. Got me my trusty carbine here!! Let me atem!!"

Uh...sorry breach team. That armor made you look like chryssalids...really.

I blame Prozac. Clearly the chryssalid was running from his horrible Aussie stench.

See... you bench me and everyone gets killed.

I may have made a pact with the devil to see Quintin Dead
