... Suddenly an alien appears on the third floor and shoots at Prozac! Prozac is unhurt and returns fire, hitting the alien twice. It goes down.

This is great Tamren, it's like I'm gaming, but at work.

I think I'm going to use all the bench time I'm getting lately to get myself into shape, and customise Edna II when she comes in.

It has been a week since the base mission. We now have plasma cannons on our 2 interceptors and we can now use alien grenades. Though det packs are still in service. I am drafting up new squads to go tackle the second alien base in Fiji. We will be going in with a party of 14 like last time. I don't know what kind of aliens we will be fighting, so every man will go in armed for bear. Laser Pistols are out, except as backup weapons for heavies. Both snipers have upgraded to a Heavy laser. To fill in the gaps in our team I have drafted Bighoppa as squad 1s new medic. Cube will be taking Pignolis place who is still in hospital for another week. Falchion will be the new assault for squad 2.

Mission Starts. Prozac, like the hardcore badass he is, starts the mission standing right in the middle of a room open on 4 sides daring the enemy to make a move. Everyone else with more sense is upstairs waiting to leave through the gravity lift. Luckily he doesn't get shot and the squads spread out, watching every corner.

New turn. Lots of stuff happens at once. Our forces are split between 2 lifts placed beside each other. Prozac to the east spots a cyberdisk in a side tunnel. Returning to cover he pulls out a detpack and is joined by Milkman. Grubber moves south instead and comes under fire from a distant sectoid shooting at him diagonally through multiple tunnels. He can't make the shot. Neither can Falchion. But the third person off the lift is Yonder with an autocannon and a direct hit with an explosive shell takes the alien down. It turns out Prozac's detpack won't be needed because Khoram gets a clear shot on the cyberdisk as he steps off the lift and takes it. One heavy plasma bolt later the disk is toast. Everyone crouches down and we wait.

New turn. Lots of noise, nothing sighted. Prozac advances to cover a large open area filled with tanks when he spots an alien. Having already set the detpack in his hand he chooses not to shoot and throws the pack over several tanks before returning to cover. We advance. But see nothing.

New turn.*KABOOOM!* The det pack obliterates half the room and that unfortunate sectoid. Plasma fire impacts the wall above Grubbers head! Good thing I had him crouched. Grubber shoots back and the sectoid is hit in the eye! We spread out over the southwest but find nothing. Bighoppa to the east faces off with a sectoid. *PEW PEW PEW* Good kill! Everyone else moves forward SWAT style, leapfrogging and checking corners.

New turn. Sectoid! But before he can finish rounding the corner Falchion blows him away in a hail of laser fire. No other contacts. All members creep forward another 10 feet one by one... But find still nothing.

New turn. UH O! Bighoppa is under alien control! He fires multiple shots at Prozac but hits wide! Prozac, unwilling to shoot the medic instead moves forward around a corner to get out of sight. Rounding the bend he spots an alien and pulls back. Firing a single shot that hits wide. Calling for support he finds Tomayto who is further up the tunnel at the next junction. After 2 tries Tomayto shoots true and the alien goes down. Down south Khoram and Grubber approach a blind corner. Not willing to go any further Khoram throws a grenade. Everyone else takes defensive positions.

New turn. *CRUMP* Khorams grenade scores a hit! Sectoid down!. Milkman who is up north watching the door to the command center opens fire on a Sectoid. They exchange shots, but hit wide, the Sectoid retreats inside. Milkman stays put and throws a grenade. Tamren and Davet are up in the room filled with the tanks, after the detpack explosion the room is half filled with smoke. As they both crouch beside a hallway a Sectoid wanders out. Clearly confused it stops and turns exposing its back. Davet smiles with glee and shoots the alien point blank in the ass with his heavy laser. A little to the east Tomayto rounds a corner spots the alien who moved back inside the HQ doors. A single shot is all it takes and he pulls back into cover beside Prozac. The members in the southwest finish sweeping and they now all converge on the alien headquarters.

New turn. An alien appears out of a doorway right in front of Falchion! Before he can do anything the alien turns and shoots Yonder! Yonder is down! Falchion retaliates and the alien falls to multiple chest hits. Milkmans grenade goes off to no effect, so he and the nearby assaults all converge on the door. Finding it empty inside they crouch down and wait. Up north Tamren, Davet and 3 others find nothing and return south.

New turn. Our team assembles to breach the HQ. Khoram and Grubber are behind the outer HQ wall, but some heavy plasma fire opens a gap and they move inside. They are joined by Milkman and Cube. Cube throws a smoke grenade. Taking cover inside the lift room they wait.

New turn. Osh*t BLASTER BOMB. *KABOOOM*. Room fills with blinding smoke. Cube is down! Khoram and Grubber are hit bad! Unbelievably the blaster bomb flew through the hole in the wall that Khoram made to get inside! Exploding in the hallway, Cube was in line with ground zero and took the full blast. But standing right beside him is Milkman! Milkman is okay! This ends now. Grubber advances first. Spots 2 aliens up above! Laser fire rips one down. Khoram advances from the other side and finds the remaining alien directly above him . Shooting a burst of 3 shots and obliterates the alien from underneath...

And then Milkman, maddened by the death of Cube runs to the centre of the lift and rises in a crouch. An armed alien grenade in his hand. A hail of plasma shrieks at him from the side. But misses! Milkman turns to find a single sectoid wielding a heavy plasma staring him down from the other side of the room. Flipping the bird to him and throwing the grenade with a single motion. Milkman drops to the lower level and everyone dives for cover. With a *WHUMP* the grenade detonates. A thunderous roar erupts as half of the command centre is obliterated in 8 separate explosions as the grenade touches off a remaining blaster bomb.

Silence, the dust settles. Base is secure. Mission accomplished.

Holeee Crap! Final tally 13 aliens killed, of which only 8 bodies are recovered. Yonder and Cube are dead :(. Khoram and Grubber will be out of action for a while.

We recovered 22 artifacts as well as 50 units of metal and elerium. Total score for this operation is 922. That should make the council happy.

Ahh damn. I'm so sorry Yonder. Was just a little too slow on the trigger. At least I got him twice over. Rest easy buddy. They have already taken too much.

Grubber didn't you get the memo? I'm "the hardcore badass" that refused to kill the medic

and if I recall correctly there is only One squad member that has killed someone with their friendly fire... I wonder who that could be Grubber? Hmmm?

I went back and loaded up the mission again so I could show you guys just how lucky you were.

The blaster round came down the lift and followed the path I marked in red.

With unbelievably good luck it flew through the hole in the outer wall that Khoram and Grubber used to get inside. Otherwise it probably would have gibbed all 4 of you!

Khoram and Grubber were shielded by the wall, so survived with heavy wounds. Cube unfortunately was directly in the path of the blast and didn't make it. Milkman was right beside him and survived without a scratch because he was behind a wall and the inner door.

New mission. Without even a week to cool our heels we have a terror mission in Panama. Our north and south american bases will not have operational radar for another week at this point so there was no chance of interception. Even though we had 4 casualties last mission we will be bringing Mrdevil with us so the squads are full up at 5 each. Nevin was changed to Heavy and will be lugging a heavy plasma for this mission.

We start. Aaaand sectoid! Right in front of the ramp! Mrdevil, after blowing some dust off his trigger finger, blasts the sectoid into pieces along with most of the building behind him. It seems we have started in the northeast corner, facing a small shop with a road to the south and a park to the west. Moving Davet and Tomayto off to watch the immediate area we wait.

New turn. TONS of plasma fire echoes from off camera. A stun bomb is fired at the ramp but impacts a tree! Inching Mr-Devil forwards reveals a cyberdisk and a sectoid standing on the road. Devil fires once! Direct hit on the disk! Suddenly the disk whirls around and blasts Edna II with 2 shots! The front armour holds and Devil fires again missing the disk but impacting the ground right behind it. Disk down. Davet and Tomayto open fire on the sectoid, Davet misses, but Tomayto gets the kill with his second shot. Moving to take cover behind the front landing wheels another sectoid is spotted to the south in front of a large house. Mudbunny slides off the side of the ramp and casually shoots it in the head. Sectoid killed. Moving everyone off the ramp we crouch down and wait.

New turn. Another sectoid to the south flees around the corner past the body of the other alien. In front of the skyranger a dazed civilian pokes his head out of the smoking hole devil made in the storefront. No further contacts. We move Devil east... Contact! A new row of buildings is revealed past the park, standing in an alleyway is another sectoid. Devil can't make the shot, but decides to hit the corner of the building beside the alley. Direct hit! The sectoid is unscathed but another one hidden behind the wall is obliterated. Prozac climbs halfway up the ramp to look over the intervening fences and snipes the remaining alien. Tomayto from his position behind the front landing gear props his rifle on the tire and guns down the sectoid to the south. The rest advance up to new cover.

New turn. A cyberdisk appears in the distance, but a rocket from Devil hammers it to the ground. Area secure. In all directions we have open ground leading to buildings. Smoke grenades are thrown and we advance. Devil rolls down the street and spots another sectoid beyond the smoke. Edosan fires a rocket, direct hit! The blast reveals another nearby sectoid. Prozac tries to snipe him, its a perfect shot but hits the remains of street lamp. With its cover gone Tamren gets the shot from the north. We advance, squad 1 to the east, 2 to the south.

New turn. A sectoid fires on Falchion! Both of them exchange shots, but only manage to remove cover. Falchion ducks further behind a window frame and blasts the sectoid with two shots to the leg. Clean hit. Devil advances to the south and spots a sectoid inside a house standing over a dead civie. Prozac, waaay on the other side of the map shoots his heavy laser between Tomayto and Mudbunny, through a window and makes a perfect headshot! *BLAM* Sectoid kill!

Mission accomplished. 11 aliens neutralized. Despite our best efforts we lost 6 civilians, but managed to save 7. Not a single member of our team was injured.

EDIT: End of the month rolls around with no new contacts. Our score is 1685. The council is very happy and our funding has been increased to the tune of 850 thousand.

New mission. On the first day of the new month our HQ radar picked up a small UFO. Interceptor 1 was sent and handily downed the UFO over Ireland. Each of our craft is armed with an Avalanch missile rack and a single plasma beam providing a powerful long range punch.

This promises to be a short mission. Same squads as last time. We now have mind probes researched and have outfitted one on each squad leader.

Mission begins, we have landed in a small area beside the UFO. Moving off the ramp Devil spots a sectoid who seems to be in the act of entering the UFO. Unable to get a shot because of the skyranger blocking him he moves off the ramp and Davet takes over. A single heavy laser blast to the chest takes care of the problem. The areas seems to be secure, so we pile off.

New turn. The outer area seems clear. Bighoppa, Falchion and Tamren prepare to breach the UFO. Falchion breaches, 2 sectoids spotted! The nearest one is right in front of him with its back turned. Falchion ducks back out and Bighoppa jumps in, tazering the sectoid to the floor. The other sectoid shoots, but misses wildly! Bighoppa jumps back out. Davet throws a smoke grenade to cover them all and we prepare to go in again.

New turn. Falchion breaches the door and finds the sectoid in his face! Diving and rolling to the side Falchion lights up the sectoid before it can react. A single shot is all it takes. UFO secure. Incredibly the UFO managed to land intact and is only slightly damaged. After scouting around a bit more we find nothing.

New turn. The only place we haven't yet searched is a large 3 story farmhouse. Unwilling to risk anyone in a dangerous room to room search and clear Tamren opts to throw a det pack onto the roof.

New turn. *KABOOOM* Bits of sectoid rain down all over the place. Area secure.

Mission accomplished. Just the way I like em. 3 aliens neutralized, one sectoid navigator captured. We salvaged the entire small UFO. No injuries. Our total score is 106.

A good start to the month! It remains to be seen how our new network of interception bases will tackle the larger stuff.

Interceptors don't have enough fuel to go all the way to Australia. The Skyranger can make it, butcan only patrol for a very short time before it has to turn back.

I seem to have picked the worst spot in the world. We get UFO hits on radar, but the UFOs are obviously headed somewhere else because they just fly past us. Another month has passed and the Aliens have invaded Brazil. The good news is that its a day mission and we have body armour. The bad news is that I couldn't afford another rocket tank. Instead we will be deploying with Nihilo and the cannon rig. Nevin has healed and will fill in for Ranger Rick.

Mission begins. Again we landed in a corner with a house to the west, and nothing but a single road to the east. Nihilo is rolling. Sectoid! He fires twice, miss, but the fence it was hiding behind it toast. Next up is Davet, he shoots the sectoid, then jumps off the ramp and comes face to face with another. Tomayto moves down the ramp, crouches and manages to hit the alien on his second shot. Pignoli covers the other side. And we wait.

New turn. Lots of distant plasma fire and a grenade knocks the corners off two nearby buildings. This reveals a sectoid and Davet and Tomayto open fire. Tomayto gets the hit and the alien is down. Everyone now piles off the skyranger, this time squad 1 will go east towards a dense cluster of buildings. Squad 2 will go south where Prozac's rocket launcher will come in handy.

New turn. Judge is under alien control and... shoots Tamren 6 times in the back. At least the armour proved it could do its job and it took all 6 shots (to kill him). *hits rewind button* VRRRRRT.

New turn. Nihilo advances, spots an alien! Makes a beautiful shot through two consecutive windows right into the sectoids head. Spots a cyberdisk far to the south. Gets another hit, but withdraws under a storm of plasma. Nevin draws sights on the disk and two shots later the disk goes kaboom and takes a sectoid with it. Both squads advance revealing 2 more sectoids. But there are so many fences in the way no one can get a shot. 2 grenades are thrown, one by Tamren, one by Grubber.

New turn, the grenades do their work, but only wound one of the aliens. Nevin charges around a corner only come face to face with the second alien. He shoots first, gets the kill and withdraws. Both squads move on to the east, but suddenly shots ring out and nearly miss Prozac who stands guard at a window. He fires his rocket but it hits a tree and falls short. Milkman moves up and tries to assist but his pistol doesn't have the accuracy. The rest of the squad can't see the target, so Nevin on the far side of the map takes the shot. Hit! Perfect headshot! We continue east.

New turn. Nihilo sweeps up the south end of the map and starts taking hits. The armour holds and undeterred he advances to find a single sectoid among a group of trees. Squad 1 opens fire, no one has a clear shot but consecutive hits remove cover until finally Tomaytohead gets the hit. Mission accomplished.

Bagged 10 aliens, lost 6 civs, saved 8. No casualties.

So what are all of our ranks?

Tomayto Prozac Pignoli and Nevin are Sergeants. Tamren is a Captain. We used to have another Captain but he was one of the guys who died. Can't remember who. Everyone else who has seen combat is a squaddie. Those that have not are all rookies.

New mission. We detected a small UFO landed in the US. But were unable to reach the site before it took off. It outran interceptor 2 and got away. A couple days later a large scout UFO was spotted nearby the same area and was shot down. We are rolling out again, same squads.

Mission start. Devil rolls off the ramp, turns to the right and spots a floater in a field. He shoots a single rocket. Its a miss, but the rocket impacts a nearby fence and the floater is down. Our LZ sucks balls. We are beside the UFO to the southeast. In a circle around us are various buildings and sheds. Both squads spread out slowly, soldiers moving in pairs.

New turn. Movement on two fronts. To the west a floater is puttering around a shed. None of us can get a shot, so tomayto throws a grenade. In the fields to the north a floater is, well, floating around in the air. Tamren shoots him in the leg but this doesn't stop him. Under cover of smoke the rest of the squad spills out of the skyranger into a wheat field.

New turn. *WHUMP* the grenade goes off, but the floater in the shed seems to have escaped the blast. Tomayto, having none of this, guns the floater down through a window. Advancing north along a fence Tamren spots the same floater, now on the ground. Firing 3 shots he gets a hit. But its still not enough. Another shot and the floater is down. The rest of the troops swing east around the UFO and head for the door.

New turn. Edosan, remembering the lessons of last mission chucks a demo pack onto the roof of a nearby barn. Further south Mudbuddy does the same. Prozac rounds the corner of a shed and spots a floater. The floater spots him first and fires!.... Only to hit the corner of another shed and stunning itself in the blast. The rest of the map seems clear and we converge on the UFO for a breach.

New turn. The detpacks go off, removing the roofs of those 2 buildings completetly. No sign of floaters. Down by the UFO Mudbunny breaches and... Oh dear. 3 floaters sighted. The power core seems to have exploded because the inside of the UFO is a wreck.

Thinking quickly Mudbunny guns down the closer floater and retreats. The other floater shoots and the plasma bolts whizz over his shoulder and out of the UFO! Nevin, still outside, lines up his autocannon and blasts the two floaters with 4 shots, taking down one and gibbing the body as the other falls to the last shot. He then withdraws.

New turn. The whole inside of the UFO is filled with dense smoke. Instead of pressing forward Mudbunny opens the door and crouches. Nevin, outside and behind him, fires several shots over his shoulder at the cockpit section of the UFO. Around the corner a floater is taken out by shrapnel. UFO secure.

Mission accomplished. 7 Aliens neutralized. One alien captured. No injuries or deaths. We managed to salvage the navigation consoles and some metal. Final score 205.

No new missions yet. Its been one week. Current research has been fruitful. Our squad equipment has been reorganized. Our supply of alien grenades is such that I am declaring the old kind obsolete. Demo packs are still stronger, so those will stay in use. I am currently researching stun launchers to replace our tazers as the capture of live specimens will become important soon. And no one wants to try tazering a cryssalid. Speaking of cryssalids, we have been lucky so far, no snakemen or mutons. Just lots of sectoids and floaters. Casualties have been relatively light, but this may change in a hurry. Nihilo has been sidelined thanks to the return of Edna. However we recently obtained new laser tech. And when he does ride out it will be at the helm of a laser tank.

Our new loadout is as follows:

All operatives: 1 smoke grenade, 1 alien grenade and 1 detpack. (weight permitting)
Assault: Laser rifle, motion scanner.
Medic: Laser rifle, medkits, stunrod.
Sniper: Heavy laser or rocket launcher and laser pistol + 3 small, 1 large rocket.
Heavy: Heavy or Auto cannon + 1 reload HE ammo and laser pistol. Or heavy plasma.

In addition the squad leaders also carry a medkit, stunrod and mind probe.

With the increase in detection and interception capability around the globe our focus is now on our soldiers. Our immediate priority is to finish researching all alien weapons and work on getting some better armour.

New mission. We detected and downed a large scout UFO over scotland and are sending the recovery team.

Mission starts. Right off the ramp Devil spots a sectoid in a nearby wheat field. After making a crater in the field so big that beer prices will spike all over Ireland, he rolls on and has a look around. Nothing else in the immediate area.

New turn. Movement in a barn. Devil aims at the side of the building and launches.... and misses! He must have spilled coffee on his crotch before hitting the trigger on that one because the rocket missed the barn by a good 45 degrees... Rolling forward to get a better shot a stun bomb streaks out and smacks Edna in the treads. Advancing on the building Tamren ducks around a corner and tazers the sectoid inside.

New turns. We fan out all over the place but find nothing. Eventually we converge on the UFO door. Tamren checks his motion scanner, it pings back 3 signatures inside... We gather up, heavies and assaults stacking by the door, Mudbunny leading.

New turn. Mudbunny breaches the door. 2 Sectoids! He opens fire, cutting down the first... and the sectoid behind it! Double kill! He dives aside and Edosan moves up to the doorway and fires 2 shots from his heavy cannon. The first has no effect, the second knocks out the second sectoid... and the sectoid behind it! Double double kill! UFO secure.

Mission accomplished. 5 aliens neutralized, 1 sectoid engineer captured. The UFO was pretty trashed but we still got the nav consoles. Total score 159.

A couple days afterwards a sudden surge in UFO activity appears over Canada. 3 separate UFOs are intercepted and downed thanks to the firepower of our new plasma beams. Unfortunately the third one was a supply ship which means we have another base to deal with. Were going in. This first UFO is a terror ship and I have no idea what we will be facing. Consequently we are going in armed to the teeth. Both of our Heavies will be using rocket launchers for this mission.

Mission Starts. We seem to have landed in the northwest corner. Devil rolls off the ramp, makes a left turn and... Reaper! Making up for last mission Devil gets a direct hit to the ass and the reaper drops. Rolling south he spots another one. People begin piling off the ramp. Tomayto is first off, he drops off the side of the ramp, then ducks under, taking cover behind the rear landing gear. He gets a hit on the reaper but doesn't do enough damage. Davet drops off the other side and burns a hole in the reapers head with his heavy laser. The UFO crashed in dense west Canadian forest so there is a lot of cover. We move out, taking positions behind the trees.

New turn. Floaters in the distance, too far to engage. Devil rolls south and soon spots the first one. Edosan lights him up with a direct rocket strike. A reaper appears on a hill further to the east. Nevin fires a rocket, direct hit. But the reaper is still standing. Remind me to replace all of our small rockets with large rockets when this is over... Mudbunny finishes off the reaper. Devil doesn't roll another 10 feet before spotting the next target, a floater. Davet snipes him with his heavy laser.

New turn. Devil rolls over a hill and spots another 2 floaters. Only mudbunny can see the first, and downs him after 2 shots. Nevin has a good shot on the other one, and gets another direct rocket hit. Moving further Devil spots a reaper in the distance. Prozac moves up to take a shot but misses. Mudbunny tries next, but misses widely. Next up is Tamren, out of 6 shots 2 manage to land on the reaper and another two land on Prozac. Evidently all this did was give him a sunburn because apart from a nick in his head armour nothing happened. Falchion is evidently a worse barber than Tamren, because he also hits Prozac twice, but downs the Reaper. This time Prozac is actually hurt, but shrugs it off, not even at half health. We advance.

New turn. Rolling around the hills Devil spots a lone floater. Milkman climbs a hill and hits on his first attempt. Squad 2 moves east towards the second set of UFO doors. Squad 1 breaches the near side. It seems empty until Tamren turns a corner and discovers a reaper. 2 shots and a miss later and the reaper is still coming, so he falls back.

New turn. A floater walks across the passage. And plasma flies out of the shadows, missing everyone. Squad 2 breaches the far door and finds... nothing. Over on the other side Tamren tosses a detpack at the reaper and everyone dives for cover.

New turn. The detpack blows up the reaper and a floater around the corner. Mudbunny moves forward and spots a floater in a room above him. Downing it with 2 shots he advances, followed by squad 1. Squad 2 does the same, only spots a reaper up top on a little ledge. Poor sucker got stuck there and can't go anywhere. However after 2 laser hits AND a rocket its still up...

New turn. Milkman rounds a corner and finds a panicked floater medic standing in the open. Pulling out his tazer he zaps the floater down. On the other side that reaper is still standing. Edosan feeds him another rocket to no effect. So Tomayto finally downs him with multiple shots. Milkman and Tamren move to the next floor.

New turn. Tamren goes one way, Milkman takes the other corner. Tamren finds nothing, but Milkman finds a floater on the UFO bridge. With a single shot he downs the floater. UFO Secure.

Mission Accomplished. 14 aliens neutralized, 1 captured. No injuries other than Prozac's, ahem, sunburns. The UFO power cores were a total loss but we salvaged the bridge consoles. and 80 unit of metal. Total score 480.
