Help me enjoy X-Com

Moon Dragon, your physical training is slowly paying off. You're a bit faster in the field. Now, you would probably improve faster if you would stop getting shot in every mission you make it in to. I think it's a miracle most of you are still alive. Thankfully I try to keep you all alive and if you look in danger of dying, I run you to a map exit point.

Well, Commander, I would like to take this time to respectfully bring your attention to my repeated requests for a new uniform. This pink sweater, while nice and warm, is making things in the field a little difficult.

Actually you have a new shiny blood red MarSec flying armor suit over top of that pink sweater, something only a few other have right now, so quit running yer mouth and make with the running of the legs! You can lose the pink sweater when you start keeping up with the rest again.

On further thought I may revoke your MarSec suit for a standard issue MegaPol one and confine you to the back of a squad to keep you healthy. The flying thing did put you in harms way a bit more than others...

You'll get your orders before the next mission. Not get down and give me 20!

Oh, and I tihnk I'm the only one commanding an Apocalypse army here, feeank.

Oooooooooooone......
Twooooooooooooo...........

It's a trick. He's trying to get you to spend all your TUs before the end of the turn so that you're a sitting duck.

Except its all in real-time in my world.

I've seen it mentioned that X-Com is one of the most powerful games in terms of emergent storytelling. Inspired by the tales on this forum, I showed my 10-year old a game where I named the soldiers after his classmates. Now he's regaling his friends with tales of how they heroically stormed the downed alien ship without taking a single casualty, or how they were tragically shot through the head just stepping out of the Skyranger.

Mrtomaytohead, can I please request that you record a video sequence where you level the MerSec building from inside out please?(IIRC that is the building where rockets and explosives are stored in the basement) The amount of destruction that you can incur in Apocalyse never gets old.

I fear asking, but, was I the only one who used the Blue armor peripherals with the Red armor body piece?

Cool, somehow I got confused and thought that Apocalypse was the only one with psi training rooms. Sign me up then, If I'm not there already.

If I knew how to record videos, I'd consider putting my blunders out there for the world to see...

I do love the destructability in the game. Especially when you take out the one things holding up mutli level objects!

Are you using DosBox?

nope. I just applied a series of files to my CD install, ran in 95 compat. mode and away I went.

Hmm... Just had a base defense mission where a good portion of my forces spawned inside a living quarters that was apparantly not actually connected to the rest of my base...

Still managed to repel the invaders with only 2 casualties, but still... mildly annoying.

I think Fraps should work under that configuration. What resolution are you running it at anyway? And do you have sound enabled? (I ask because I have had poor experience with trying to run the game previously in Win XP, esp. if the sound is enabled)

The amount of destruction that you can incur in that game is truly awesome. Though it does work against you if you rely on using ground vehicles to intercept UFOs. Silent Storm is the only other tactical game that had a very destroyable environment. Too bad I can't, for the life of me, to get either it or the expansion to run on my modern gaming machine.

Ground vehicles suck and eat up your vehicle cap. Just dump them all.

Everything enabled, haven't told it to adjust resolution, running the monitors native 1440x900 on desktop. Sounds works almost perfectly with little hiccups in the music occasionally. One of the things I did was a mod to make the sound work by using VDMsound.

I never use ground vehicles. And my assualy squad consists mostly of a large amount of hoverbikes and a few hovercars. Hoverbikes are great because they are really nimble so they don't get hit nearly as often as even hovercars and they help free up $$ for other things.

I'll look into fraps.

Apocalypse army battle update:

Moondragon, you're not out the woods yet, but you're almost there. Clever ID and Strewth have been trying to hide from me and they're so slow I can't even get them to the front lines if I wanted to kill them off.

While nobody has died since last time, the aliens have been stepping up their game so I thought it high time to recruit a few more people. AnimeJ and Judge Digger were added shortly after I mentioned they would. Judge Digger has had a real tough time staying out of the medical ward. I think he's got the hots for one of the nurses.

Last night I recruite 3 people. Big Hoppa, My BrainzHz and Clemenstation.

Clemenstation got 2 kills in his first mission; one hyperworm, and one chrysallid (defenseless stationary cocoon) and ended up in the medical ward.

My BrainzHz is an adroid, of course.

Big Hoppa gets the Rookie of the War award. Against all odds and in the face of almost certain death he scored the biggest alien artifact research grab ever. On his first mission, which was a crashed alien ship, while the entire team was camping the doors, he ran down into the trench the crashed ship had cut from the land towards the doors the aliens were pouring out of to grab the most critical item in the game, a handheld shield generator. While under fire, not only did he obtain a shield generator, he also filled his backpack with advanced alien grenades that we have yet to recover. Had he not done so, all the items would have been lost as not 5 seconds after he cleared the area, a massive explosion went off, destroying nearly all the dropped equipment and detonating all explosives. Way to go Big Hoppa!

Also, devastator cannons have been finally researched and there were enough everyone to get one, except Certis and I. We both get two! 2nd's will be distributed as supplies become available, but the guy who 'accidentally' shot my right arm from behind last night might be waiting for a while. :glares at Psych:

Wow! I rock!

All this talk of Apocalypse is making me want to try to play it again. GAH! I'll never finish my second playthrough of Dragon Age!

Would that really be the first time?

Just trying to clarify for insurance purposes. Between this accident and the child support I'll have to pay those tundra wolves that I apparently raped in my sleep, I incurred a lot of game-related expenses last night.

Wow, I thought Steam Sales were as bad as it got, I had no idea that's just the gateway drug.

Gateway drug to tundra wolf rape?

Well, I hoped I had enough lead time to get an Avenger ready to launch to Cydonia, but I guess I didn't; I lost. Base after base kept falling thanks to aliens just shooting their way through with blaster launchers and without enough forces to patrol for alien activity, the remaining governments folded up X-COM less than two weeks before I was ready to attack Mars. Now I'm going to be pissed off for the rest of the weekend.

When I played apocalypse I always bought hoverbikes and hovercars at a 2-1 ratio. The hoverbikes got lasers or plasma. The hovercars got dual janitor missile launchers. Don't bother with the prophet missile arrays. The lack of ammo cripples them and the increased agility is only useful if you are fighting enemy hoverbikes. The UFOs by comparison just get less agile over time.

Very Large UFO landing near Moscow. 14 veteran troops, six in power suits, the rest in personal armor. Heavy plasmas have been researched and everyone has one as well as alien grenades.

I get the first wave off the boat and start spreading them out. We see a couple mutons - no big deal, a couple of shots of plasma and they're down. I've got ten soldier off and spread out what I think is quite a bit.

A muton steps out of the central UFO lift...and fires a blaster bomb. Ten battle hardened survivors are reduced to entrails and scattered limbs in the blink of an eye, including a colonel and two captains. All i can do is watch in horror as the remaining four go berserk and panic. One alien grenade later and I've lost the entire mission. I have two wounded soldiers back at my main base.

I've just finished destroying Goodjer Fort, so now I can focus on Goodjer-Com again, I should be pretty close to the end game with what I am researching, hopefully I won't suffer the same fate as Ratboy and be brought low by my hubris. I plan on taking all the surviving Goodjers over to TFTD if I can find the old cryostasis app.

My problem was that my European and SE Asia base both got knocked out thanks to Ethereals and Sectoids, who used a combination of mind control and blaster launchers to wipe the floor with me. If only knew that you could fire blaster bombs willy-nilly into access lifts and hangars without worrying about it wrecking your base, I would have had a shot at stopping them, or they would have finished me off faster if they mind-controlled the wrong guy.

Wow... What difficulty are you playing?

Wow, first mission back and it was a hard one. MoonDragon got sniped stepping out of the Skyranger. Another Goodjer (we can't even identify with dental records) got zombiefied, damn I hate Chryssalids. Dudley Smith finally met his end breaching the room with the final snakeman. I'll miss his crazy antics, his squad however, will not.

Well, if I can't be a hero, I can cope with my life serving as a salutary lesson.

By the way, the current games played by my friends (most of them Goodjers) on Steam currently read: TF2, Torchlight and X-Com UFO Defense. And nothing else. Good job, hivemind!

EDIT: Yesterday I played all three.
