Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Here is a fresh thread for Modern Warfare 2 now that the game is released. Things we don't need to discuss anymore:

- The PC version lacks dedicated server support.
- The marketing for the game is offensive and stupid.
- Boy, Call of Duty sure gets a lot of hype!

If you miss those debates, you can relive all the good times here.

Boo! Your post dismissed my snide comment. Well anyhow, seeing how I haven't played the first, would it be worth picking up the second before hand?

Don't bother with CoD4. Just get the newest one. Unless you only play singleplayer, in which case don't get any CoD game.

Anyhow - I started a thread asking what games people were abandoning to play MW2 and why, but it was shut down. I think I'm supposed to ask again here, and I think I'll be largely ignored. But I digress...

Really, I was lucky to even get the game. I was going to get it when I went on break, but decided to sneak out of work for five minutes around 3 PM, to find that the local EB had a line coming out the front door. At three in the afternoon.

I was told there were only enough units to cover "a fraction" of pre-orders, and that the phone has never been on the hook for longer than 20 seconds all morning. Crazy stuff. Can't wait to get home and play.

This game is awesome. That's all I have to say.

Oh, and I'll be on Live later playing multiplayer anyone wants to join in.

Finished the single-player campaign in about six hours with a thirty minute dinner break. Totally and unashamedly insane. It's like Michael Bay X 10000. Had fun though. I'll probably play through it again.

Haven't tried multiplayer yet though. That comes later tonight. Also, I got the day off tomorrow. :highfive:

I came here expecting the MW2 thread to have 1000 posts already. Anyway, I wouldn't touch multiplayer in this game with a 100 foot bayonette, so all I'd like to know is ... how long is the sp campaign? The last one was very good, but nowhere near long enough to justify $60.

edit: ha, my answer was simul-posted. Thanks. 5.5 hrs? cya in 2010, MW2. Y'all be careful out there.

Yeah, so... It's a good game and I'm enjoying it but at every turn Infinity Ward seems to be scolding me for buying the PC version. It's a very bare-bones port. I couldn't even get into "options" without starting a campaign, and when you click "multiplayer" it closes down and starts up a separate application (with separate configuration files). I half expect the options screen to have, "Tip: This would have been easier if you just got the XBox version" on the bottom.

This thread is a fresh one now that the game launched. You can find a 55+ page "Catch All" in the Games forum.

I have to believe that's utter BS—not on your part, I believe you, but on EB's. I was in and out of a Future Shop in two minutes at lunch today, no pre-order shenanigans, no line-up, no stock issues. What an ass-backwards and disingenuous business practice they have. If they weren't so pre-occupied being a pawn shop maybe they could stock the products people are trying to buy from them. That said, it's not like they are the only destination for buying games anymore, new or used—or trading them for that matter. Good riddance to good rubbish.

All versions of CoD have always had two executables for SP and MP. Even Splinter Cell was like that.

I wouldn't say Michael Bay. The single player campaign actually managed to get some emotions out of me. Michael Bay films generally don't get that reaction from me, instead I feel like I am being beaten over the head with a plastic dildo by coke addict.

To me the single player game reminded me more of a really good Tony Scott film from the 80s or early 90s.

Well I believe him about not getting enough pre-orders and the phone thing. I tried to call the place to make sure they had enough pre-orders since I got in at 1 PM. After not being able to get through (five calls over two hours), I decided to duck out and play it safe. When I got there, there were 15 people in line and the phone did not stop ringing.

That being said, my buddy's GF works at Best Buy, and she said that even after a midnight launch, they still had over 300 copies of the game. Plus, I find Rogers Video always has a few copies to buy, mainly because people don't go there to buy games. So if I wasn't able to get my $5 pre-order, I'd just go elsewhere and get that money back on a future purchase.

Still, I've never seen an EB Games that busy at three in the afternoon!

Yikes I'm at the part after the airport where you are chasing the guy through the town, it's like Black hawk Down x1000, and I'm on regular. It is ridiculous I've probably dies 25 times.

EDIT - 30 times and still not through it. I must be doing something wrong here.

Ignore that you're supposed to be chasing someone. Just creep through.

Rule 1 of MW games is that all pressure and intensity is faked. You're very rarely on a time limit.

Some of the spec-ops missions are really really cool.

Also, the story line is just flat out ridiculous. Like WTF bizarre.

Yeah, I believe them too, I just mean the whole "didn't receive enough units to cover pre-orders, let alone sell to walk-ins" is a BS way to run a business.

Graphics are really good.... Impressive what the now 3 year old Xbox 360 can push out still...

As soon as I saw the level titled "Wolverines!", I laughed.

Man now I remember why I hate playing MP on 360. I can't jump right into a game with friends, then I try to just join a quick match and I'm in a room by myself waiting for 5 mins (so far). is the great IW system trying to match me up with 7 other people that have not played MP yet?

Um, I just jumped into a bunch of quick matches on the 360. No problems, no waiting (well not five minutes of waiting). May want to check your NAT.

In other multiplayer news... These maps are ridiculously large. Almost too big.

Yeah it finally put me into a match. 12 people and here is how it put us into teams as far as lvl -- 1, 2, 4,4,4,4 and the other team 17,26, 10, 7,12,6

EDIT: I also forgot how big the d*ckheads are on live. I appreciate a lvl 36 that just shot me 16 times with the helo tell me that i should just return the game.

There's practically no context for anything, as well. The first half in particular feels like some kind of bizarre anthology of military set pieces, and I'm not even sure what exactly is going on in the Act 3 briefing.

How do they get inserted and exfil'd out of Kazakhstan's heartland BY A CHOPPER?

Bagrum AFB?

Anyone else get a code for COD classic on xbl?

Mid-air refueling I guess. I believe most military choppers have it now, how they could get a refueling tankers near Russian Airspace I couldn't tell you.

Go slow and be methodical. Use the cover and the open buildings. One thing I noticed about Modern Warfare 2 is that the single player is a lot slower in pace and you have to really inch your way along. I very much got a Killzone 2 vibe from the single player. Except, ya' know, the controls work.

Like GG I'm impressed with the graphics, the fact that this game runs as fluidly as it does and looks gorgeous is a testament to IW's engine prowess. That said this story is flat out rediculous, but it does make for some engaging set pieces. It really feels like living a Michael Bay movie

Yeah, I remember Splinter Cell doing that. I guess I just felt like it's a "Splinter Cell Era" thing that companies don't do anymore.

Jonman's advice of leg sweeping is sound, as is larry's suggestion of taking it slow. I just kind of ran. I'd run, mow down anyone who got in my way, and keep going. The layout of the level means if you get by someone, you probably won't need to deal with them later. They'll never see you again. I still died a few times but I did make it and I didn't lose the urgency. It seems to me like if you've got someone screaming in your ear to get the lead out and you're trying to intercept someone, taking it slow at all would ruin the immersion.

I'm having too much fun in MP to post my impressions but had to share wonderful news. I just unlocked a suppressor for the Barrett .50 Sniper Rifle. *shivers with orgasmic delight* Let me repeat that...A SUPPRESSOR FOR MY BELOVED .50 CAL.

EDIT: *drool*...*orgasm*...*screams with glee*...*orgasm*....*faints*
