Thief series catch-all

Pages

Recently we were talking about the upcoming Thief 4, which inevitably brought us back to the time-honored Thief series. On the thief-thecircle.com site there are tons of fan missions and mods, but I wanted to post a few links to some mods that nicely update the graphics of Thief 2.

First off, the widescreen mod. If you get no other mod try this one, it makes a noticeable difference when playing the game on big monitors.

Next, the texture enhancement pack. Nice texture updates!

Finally, the Doom 3 engine is being used to make a new set of fan mission tools, called the Dark Mod. You'll need Doom 3 to play it, not Thief 2. Here's a link to a standalone mission called The Tears of St Lucia. The AI needs some tweaking, but this conversion will be amazing if they get it right.

If anybody's having problems installing these, please post here too. I'm no techie but maybe we'll find a solution.

Update 10/17/09: The Dark Mod is out. Dust off that Doom 3 disc!

Dont forget about Thief 2X : Shadows of the Metal Age.

I think it's fantastic what they're doing with the Dark Mod. Here's a link to some ambients and screens.

And for fans of the rope arrow and missed it in TDS the following video is for you.

Ahhh shadows of the metal age. What an awesome run. I had to quit halfway through because the zombies freaked me out. They didn't moan like the originals who could make you sh*t your pants but they looked crazy wierd. I chickened out when I had to steal something from a haunted hospital chock full of undeads.

Screenshots please

The Dark Mod is a mod for the Doom 3 engine. I'm not sure if a Thief 4 is in development but I hope so.

Yes, a.k.a. Thi4f.

Well done eidos.

Let me suggest, then, that you stay far away from Shalebridge Cradle in Thief 3.

That one level was worth the price of the whole game all by itself. Even though I hated it passionately.

Dear god the cradle. Talk about sh*tting bricks.

"uugh its still warm!"

The Dark Mod is going to consume me once the mod community starts taking advantage of it. I can't wait. Citizen86 if you haven't finished Thief2, check it out from the beginning again with the widescreen high-resolution mod and the texture pack. Aside from the humans themselves, it looks pretty good now.

Someone would go and start a thief thread the month I was too busy to play it again.

I actually played around with building a map for the Dark Mod. Didn't finish it, obviously.

I installed Thief 3 last night and played for a while... hopefully I can at least get to the Cradle and find out what everyone has been talking about. I'd like to get to Thief 2 as well though.

Hard to find time though, between working and life... I have Oblivion installed with a ton of mods that finally make it playable, X3 which I just bought and is a huge time consumer... I'm going to try to push through these two Thief games then hopefully have time for X3, lol.

You know, I loved The Cradle, but I think it's been talked up so much now that there's about zero chance of it meeting the expectations set for anyone who hasn't played the game. It's like those people who went back to Half-Life 2 when the Orange Box came out or who played BioShock after months of the first wave enthusing about how great it was.

Yeeessss the whole Thi4f thing is coming back to me. I hope the developer is better at designing gameplay than the marketer's spelling ability.

Well I've read a bit about it... not much though. Plus I'm jumpy when it comes to scary type things... so I'm sure it'll still work on me, haha.

Looks like the The Dark Mod Beta release is just around the corner

thedarkmod.com wrote:

The mod is about 98% ready for release--all that's left is some final testing of the package and the 3 FMs that will come with it.

We're a bit held up by a fairly sizable Training Mission, however. It's taking much longer to finish than we had hoped. We'd like to be able to release the training mission with the mod itself, as there are lots of new skills players might want to test out before leaping into their first mission.

Clicky for a pretty nice looking screenshot

That looks awesome.

Oh that looks pretty damned good. Looking forward to trying it out.

So very cool. The gameplay and audio is still superb from 9 years ago, all we needed was this eye candy upgrade.

This seems to be the most recent thief thread so I thought it appropriate to post this for anyone interested.

Just spotted today that there is a new compilation of the first three thief games now available ( I think just in the UK at the moment though, i didn't spot it on amazon.com).

What's so different about this one you say?....Thief GOLD, that's what. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've seen the expanded version of Thief 1 available since it was first released and in my opinion this pack is WELL worth grabbing for that alone as the extra missions it adds are all brilliant.

Huh, nice coincidence.

I bought my copy of this from this eBay store, UK to USA Games Direct. $14.95 + 3.85 shipping from the UK to Canada. This is a steal for TG, and throw in TMA and TDS for less than Steam sells TDS alone. The eBay, Play.com and Amazon descriptions all describe it as including The Dark Project, but the Mastertronic release is Thief Gold on the disc and cover. If anyone is even considering this, just pull the trigger already!

Thats great news. For the life of me, I can't get Thief: Dark Project (I don't have Gold yet) to run correctly on my system. It runs way too quickly and the resolution is horrible. Anyone know if the new collection dvd installs easily nowadays?

Don't know yet. It says xp/vista in the system requirements but that could just be referring to Thief 3. I've ordered a copy of it anyway, should get it Wednesday, so i'll find out then, unless Gravey can answer that already.

actually on thinking about it I had thief gold installed recently and it was working fine in XP. (There were a few loops to go through in order to get it to work right first if i recall). You may have already seen this but just in case:

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?s=64b201e1f58a22acc31a6b34eb9398ec&t=75031#install

Help! Thief runs too fast!
Turn on v-sync. Make sure the refresh rate is 60Hz. Try also turning on full antialiasing. (Reference thread : http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=70334)

The last time I tried to install either Thief or Thief 2 on an XP system (I forget which one), I had to struggle with the installer; it wouldn't run correctly without being in compatibility mode, and IIRC, you couldn't put it in compatibility mode on the CD, because it couldn't write the PIF. So I ended up having to copy all the files to the hard drive, set the installer for Win95 mode, and then install it from there.

That screenshot looks freaking awesome. Whoda thunk the ancient Dark Engine could look so good?

That whole TTLG post is a font of useful information. There's also a post on the Eidos forums that explains how to get Thief 1 to run.

The DDFix patch should be your first stop: it adds more resolutions and widescreen support, and fixes the multicore issue, among other things. You might also want to install the VP7 codec. Otherwise, those FAQs should cover any problems you run into.

I'm running the trilogy on Windows XP SP3 on a Core 1 Duo MacBook at 1280x800, they all installed fine and look great. TG and TDS will play without the disc, but TMA asks for it. Steam pops up telling me how community features are available during TDS, even though I obviously didn't buy it through Steam—interesting.

if you want to try a specific map in Thief 3, try my savegame backups.

Make sure to backup all of your save files and the savegame.ion file first!

Cryptic statements on the TTLG boards by the Dark Mod team indicate the beta might be released today. Time to find that Doom 3 disk.

Good find, Stevenmack. I'm throwing that on my wishlist, as I haven't played 1 or 2, and only bought 3 a couple weeks ago in the Direct2Drive sale.
