"Left 4 Dead" Catch All

the horde will be controlled by an AI 'director' and additional players can leap in to control undead avatars at any point

OK, that's pretty damn cool.

Hey, I'd rather they take their time and do it right, this is a shooter I'm really intrigued by and I want a top-notch product. :D

And I think the positive vibes we're all getting on this game are a result of the obvious intensive play-testing (and the fact that what we've been shown months ago looked fantastic and close to a finished product).

It also helps that the time spent play-testing Team Fortress 2 to death obviously paid off huge. It's hard to imagine Left 4 Dead not being fantastic after that.

I can only imagine what will happen with zombies after the excellent characters in TF2.

The Smoker's primary weapon is his fifty foot tongue that really makes him the hit of every party.

I think I am in love with this game.

I find it funny that although I was the one who started this thread, I haven't paid any attention to this game since then.

We've all been duped. Let's turn around and go home. *sigh*

No, I ain't saying this is a bad game, it's just that since the announcement and now, there's been a lot on our collective gamer plates. I'm still looking forward to this, but unfortunately I've been a wee bit distracted over the last few months.

*sigh* This is all Rob's fault. Valve wants to punish Canada for all of his Female Doggoing & moaning.

Shacknews has news that Left 4 Dead will not be out in "early 2008" as last predicted (story). Word is the multiplayer zombie game by Valve's newly acquired Turtle Rock Studios is now due in August or September.

Dammit!

F*ckin' Rob.

Rob's probably just a cog in the vast Canadian War on Fun.

Damn, I wish you'd posted that in the other thread. I'd reply with something pithy like: And I'm the conductor.

And then I'd lock it.

RE: Left 4 Dead
Shack will have a hands on impression sometime next week. May be worth a read once they've had a chance to slam the doors and kick the tires.

Left 4 Dead is coming out for the Xbox 360 too. From xbox360fanboy.com

"The new game from the newly-acquired-by-Valve studio Turtle Rock Studios, Left 4 Dead has had a fair bit of press from the PC side of the gaming press, but we've heard relatively little in relation to a console version. Well that's over, as OXM recently revealed that the game will not only be appearing on PCs, but that the 360 version will be the only one appearing on any console. The folks from OXM got to play two scenario's (read: levels) on PC and one level on a 360 dev kit. As a minor point (but a good sign) the names of those levels recall the game's horror roots: "The Hospital" and "Cornfield."

The second part to this news is the identity of the developer who will be handling the 360 port (Valve and Turtle Rock won't be working with it hands-on). That dev is the creator of Halo 2 DLC, Certain Affinity. The 16 man team with former Halo team members will be "handle(ing) 360-specific elements like matchmaking, Live support, console customization, and 360 gameplay tweaks."

Good news for 360 Owners! I'm always happy when a good PC game gets ported to Console. More $$$ for Valve is a good thing.
360 exclusive is not surprising given Valve's known disdain for the PS3.

I agree that it's not necessarly surprising that it's going to be exclusive but I just thought it was Gabe Newell that had the disdain for the PS3 not all of valve, I guess Gabe is basically the face of valve but it's one of those things.

Gumbie you made my 2008! This is huge! Back-to-back, guns blazing, noxious critters exploding all around... It'll be like your wedding reception.

Aw for sh*t's sake.

Why is that bad? When was it supposed to be out?

I'm kinda happy to see that; I was wondering when it was due, and figured it'd be longer than that. (Of course, I also haven't been following the dates on it...)

We were hoping for the dry summer months.

When it was announced, I think it was a mid-2007 release (maybe even Feb 07?). I could be wrong. The last delay pushed it to August or September. But this latest interview says they've skipped over October and pushed it straight to November.

The frustrating thing is (and I'm not really frustrated or upset about the delays) that from previews I've read and watched, it looks the same as when it was announced. Meaning, it looked ready for release way back then.

Let's say I absolutely love this game and it becomes my favorite game upon its release. What's going to suck is getting my ass kicked by fellow GWJers (*cough*Desram*cough*) in my favorite game. Why can't I be awesome at games?! I play them enough. I should be a god amongst digital men.

Can't I pay them $40 and get Left 4 Dead: Prologue right now?

Have I mentioned that I played it last August?

Based on my limited impressions from that occasion, there is a lot that's been added to the visuals since then, particularly with regard to the lighting engine. The latest screenshots and videos look much sexier than the game I played.

The maps are enormous and very densely detailed, so I figure a lot of effort is going into building and play testing a suitable number of maps for a full-priced release. Also, the final version is supposed to support solo play with friendly bots. That was not implemented at all in the build I played. I imagine that, knowing Valve's commitment to doing things right, stuff like friendly AI is going to get fine tuned to the nth degree.

What, you weren't already in the loop? For shame! We're all very disappointed in you.

I've given up asking my friend at Valve about release dates. He has never given me a satisfactory answer.

I remember when on a GFW podcast Shawn Elliot said he was pretty hopeful this game would come out this spring because when he saw it a year ago it felt more balanced and polished than TF2 did at the time.

Maybe it's being held back to coincide with Episode 3, although considering they probably want that one to end with a bang, and Episode 2 took a year and a half, maybe that's asking too much.

Also, I'm worried this game is going to be hurt by overkill. I feel like there's been a preview in some publication or website every month for the past year already, by Christmas maybe everyone will be sick of the concept, especially if several of the other high profile zombie games being made right now come out first.

Errrrr? I might have to investigate, didn't realize we had some other zombie games coming out.

I really can't wait until this game comes out. I look forward to accompanying you boys across a deserted rooftop, and being assaulted by hordes of zombies and trying to stay alive. Knowing how good you guys are, I shudder to think about facing some of you as the zombie characters. November can't get here fast enough!

PC Gamer did a Zombie games article in their March edition, I believe. There are several zombie games on the horizon. I can't find the article linked anywhere right now though.
