"A Life Well Wasted" (Robert Ashley's Podcast)

Robert Ashley, probably one of my favorite 1Up contributors, has finally struck out on his own with his own podcast.

Well okay then. So let it be written, so let it be done.

Bobito is awesome. Downloading this with my phone at work so I have it for the ride home

I like this format. I like the podcast. Now I have to find a way to get a podcast into my schedule.

It's ridiculously awesome, and as someone who's both done a lot of interviews and done enough editing work to know how hard it is, I'm even more impressed. If he can do this on a weekly basis as a one man show, well, he's got both a sh*tload more talent & time than I do, that's for sure.

Oh man this is the best thing to come out of the 1up crew yet.

I really enjoyed it.

Nah, yours is better - redirecting folks here

EDIT: For those asking why I didn't like it - the above comment is not about the podcast - we simul-posted initial announcements about the podcast; I dumped my thread in favor of this one. I'm hoping with a passion that this isn't a flash in the pan, its a very intelligent, very well crafted podcast. Full marks Mr Ashley of Berkeley.

I got to the Phil Collins part. It's hard to breath. Hahaha.

Needs to work on the compression a bit, 62 MB for 45 minutes of podcast is odd.

I LOVE this podcast. Love it!

I agree this show is great, and I hope it continues on a regular basis.

I'm a little jealous to be honest. I would love to put something together like he did.

I find this is the problem with a lot of people, including myself, when they first start a show. It can go one of two ways usually, you say to hell with it and try the lowest compression you think you can get away with or you go really high compression because you're worried about bandwith. I am sure in the end he will settle with one that works best for both.

I like the f*ck f*ck song.

This is absolutely freaking awesome. After hearing a lot of the new shows that seem to do the exact same segments as all the others, this is an incredibly refreshing format. I've never heard games talked about in quite this way. I really love it

Robert's host has been getting hit pretty hard, so I mirrored the show

That was great, it was a lot like that one GFW where him and Shawn recorded talking to people about made up games. I really hope he keeps it up. Also looking forward to the album.

Merchants of Cool -- A segment I'd love to see come back.

This show is brilliant.

Amazing show, seems like he's been influenced by the cut-up style of WNYC's RadioLab and This American Life (more like the former). I continue to be astounded by the talent of these former EGM editors and baffled as how incompetent the suits at both Ziff and Hearst must be to consider these folks unprofitable or having no "value add".

I haven't listened to it yet, but it is currently downloading and I look forward to it. Robert Ashley was always very enjoyable on the 1up podcasts and I can't wait to see what he does with this. Between this podcast, Rebel FM and geekbox, the void is practically filled in the 1up podcasting slump.

Really enjoyed this first effort a lot. The time and care it must have required is astounding! Can't wait to hear the next one.

The number I heard was around 30 hours of production time. Yikes!

I am with Jeff Green, This American Life for games. Bobbito is a genius.

Word is that this'll be a once a month podcast instead of a weekly. I'm just bummed that I have to wait until I get home to get it.

Yeah, the production quality on that - and the music - means it'd be very hard to do weekly, unless that's ALL you did. (Assuming it's completely a one-man band.)

I really, really enjoyed this podcast. It is far and away better than 90% of the gaming podcasts out there, and I'm looking forward to the next one.

The Seanbaby segment was hilarious. "They missed the whole point! It's not about being gay, it's about sucking."

I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one to get the (fantastic) This American Life vibe from the production and editing. It is a compliment to Robert Ashley's work that he managed to totally distract me from the fact that he sounds incredibly stoned every time he opens his mouth.

I remember being so confused when I read those old columns. "What does this guy have against Phil Collins?"

Bloody freakin' brilliant. I really hope Robert has the time and resources to continue this. If he puts up a donation button, I've got coin for him.

Agreed, I think it was fantastic, one of the best podcast i've heard, i can't wait for the next episode now.

But doesn't look like he will be putting up a donate button from what i've been reading.

it's all good either way.

Man that was great. I really do hope he keeps it going. If he keeps it at that quality one a month is fine by me.

The whole Seanbaby segment is gold.

Feeling conflicted about this. On one hand, it's yet another reminder that the former Ziff crew are some of the most intelligent and creative games journalists out there.

On the other, it's yet another reminder that some of the most intelligent and creative games journalists out there are unemployed in the worst economic climate in years, some probably considering leaving the industry altogether in order to pay their rent, because a bunch of clueless overpaid executives were too focused on making 1UP an attractive property to sell to help pay off their humongous debt load caused by their own incompetence and mismanagement, instead of providing it with the resources and opportunities it deserved.

That's right. It's been over three weeks and I'm still f*cking bitter about it.
