Elemental: War of Magic - Catch All

I loved that intro screen. I literally laughed out loud when I fired it up.

And heck, despite their best efforts, I'm already finding the initial Beta1 client to be interesting. Not a lot of depth to it, but I can already see the potential there. I like a lot of the design ideas going into it already.

You know what's REALLY freaking awesome? It takes so little time to take a turn that I held down the space bar and took 179 turns (the time it took to manufacture a 10-man squadron of my custom-designed elite shock troopers) in the span of about two minutes!

CRAZY!

My shock troopers were so f*cking epic that they destroyed the game client! Hoo-RAH!

Anyone hit a BSOD yet? I think it might be my drivers. Im using nvidia 185.85, I need some free time so I can fire up the new 190. version.

Not yet, although I did Crash To Dekstop when I built a mine, which wasn't being constructed in the right place and seem bugged in general. Hven't reported it yet, waiting for this weekend to look through all their forums and see what's already been posted.

I too laughed out loud during their intro, which was great. I also really like the unit design system. I was pretty tired last night though, so I'll save more impressions for once I've put more time into it.

How long will the pre-order be open?

Someone got my CC number, so I'm waiting for a new card, and Stardock won't take PayPal for pre-orders! I'm gnawing my fingernails waiting for the new one, hoping the pre-order doesn't disappear...

Robear, if Impulse supports gift purchases I'll buy it for you and you can spot me later.

STOP TEASING ME! My wallet is in hand but I really shouldn't spend $40 on this yet with all the other stuff that's about to drop.

People are that excited about this? To each his own I suppose but I can't think of anything I would hate to do more for a game I've already planned on buying then ruin my experience by replaying continous beta updates months before the final product is released. I already hate reading too many previews or even playing a demo the entire way through. It reminds me of people who like to read complete five page summaries and all the comments for episodes of shows they haven't watched yet.

I've answered MD in pm. I'm not at home, so does anyone know if this is possible? And is there anything that would not allow someone in another country to gift to someone in the US?

The difference here is that Stardock is very communicative with their beta players, and you're not just testing their game for stability, you're actually playing and communicating with them to help make the game deeper and more fun than it otherwise would be. Their beta testers make a big difference in the end product. Since the product goals of Elemental are right in line with what I want from a massive turn-based fantasy 4x game, I want to get in on this one from the get-go and hopefully help provide feedback to make it the best game of its type.

I suppose so, but my feeling remains that I would rather just enjoy the end product, rather then burn out on a game while it's still in development. If it turns out to be the best game of it's type, I'ld rather not have seen it in whatever iterations brought it to that point so the surprise and magic gets taken from me. Same reason things like PAX don't appeal to me. All the power to those who don't feel like me, though. I'll wait until release day.

That's funny. I just got an "Out of Memory" error. Microsoft Windows is reporting that

Turn based fantasy strategy game has stopped working

Cute. I've been getting a bunch of random crashes... I'm thinking this crash came because I was close to getting 100% research in the Warfare category. I ran out of new stuff so I let it rack up the bonuses since I was losing about 100 gold a turn in wages.

It's funny, I fired it up and just messed around, and it had that je ne sais quois pas. I just wanted to keep playing. I can't put my finger on it, but something is right about this game.

Which is largely where I'm at, even if I had time for the beta I'm afraid I'd get burned out before it started to get interesting. Even if I am temped to pre-order just to get that intro screen.

That is an epic starting screen. A massive wave of nostalgia just tumbled me; I think I need to fire up dosbox and play some classic RPG/adventure games.

I am not going to buy into the beta (for a few reasons) but I wouldn't mind hearing about some of the things people like/discover with the game, if it's not against an NDA. Really looking forward to the release!

It's not really what I'd call a 'game' at this point, or even a beta product - more like a 4x tech demo. The basic shell of the game is there, and it works about like you'd expect. There are also stability issues (which is to be expected) and the UI is really dumb. Once the game is fleshed out more and the magic system goes in I think it will be much more interesting.

I've just been messing around with it until it crashes. As you say, as they add more, it'll get more interesting.

Has anyone figured out how to best submit bug reports? I read the forum post, saw that they had like 3 different systems/approaches and just shut down due to the agony of choice. Clear. Concise. Instructions. "If you feel like it, it might be helpful, should try to post, use this thing for binaries, try to attach this stuff, try to find these files, zip files in hidden folders, or use this system."

FYI October 1st is the deadline to pre-order and get into beta, better hurry!!!!

When is the next purchase window after this?

They haven't announced that yet, I'm not sure if they will before this one closes. With release being expected roughly a year from now (at the current time, that's obviously flexible) there's bound to be another preorder window for beta access well before release.

That said, I wanted in on it too badly to wait.

I know, and you sold me on it this weekend too, but I don't think I have the time to contribute to the beta feedback right now.

I just want to thank all you beta testers for taking one for the team:

Beta 1A of Elemental has arrived (or will in a few minutes). It’s still incredibly primitive but a lot has gone on under the covers thanks to feedback from the beta testers from the initial beta.

First, a lot of bugs got fixed. There’s still a lot more to go at least but the CPU frying issue, the hard disk corruption issue, and of course the video card overheating problems have been mostly taken care of so we are pretty sure that the odds of the game physically damaging your computer are way down now (probably less than 1 out of 3).

Secondly, most of the profanity has been removed except from the technology descriptions and tool tips where we are still working to reduce that to a level where at least the expletives form a grammatically correct sentence.

Third, the root kit and spyware that beta 1 had in it has been mostly taken out. While the game loading will still make a complete file list of what is on your drive, it no longer uploads .xls and .doc files to our spam affiliate servers in Asia. I know several people had mentioned or were concerned with seeing their personal photo albums and home budgets ending up on the net. We are still looking into the issue of it submitting Quicken and MS Money data files to third-parties but we are hoping by Beta 2 that will be mostly resolved.

...Is it a bad sign that reading this just makes me want in the beta?

The title screen better stay for the final product, so goddamn win.

I played through a game last night, and sadly, when I win the game still crashes to desktop after I hit "ok" on the "Conquest Victory" pop-up window.

I'll need to check the beta forum tonight and either add on to an existing report or submit one myself.

It's been a while, so I wanted to post an update for those that are in the beta currently. The "spells" beta should be opening in the next week or so.

Here are some of the spells we’ll be testing:

a. Mass Heal

b. Raise Land

c. Lower Land

d. Raise Forest

e. Raise Desert

f. Raise Swamp

g. Charm Monster

h. Teleport to friendly territory

i. Revive Land

j. Imbue Hero

Sweeet!
I keep loading it up every few weeks and running around the map trying to find the spells to build cities near them so that I can build the structure and then... usually crash or notice that I'm so broke that I should be pawning my teeth.

Can I get good money by pawning my teeth? I could use that money right now.

Thanks for the update Island Dog.

The Beta's closed isn't it? I didn't have a PC when the beta sign up first went around.

It's been a few weeks since I popped into the game. Time for another look, I guess. Funny, even in the current state, this game has "it".
