So do I have to preorder to get into beta? Or can I wait for impressions first?

I think there will be multiple phases to the beta. One is coming up soon and another will be next year before release. But I bet beta testers will be under NDA so you're probably not gonna get any impressions.

But can I enter the beta at any time?

No, Stardock has said after beta begins they won't be letting anyone in again until next year sometime.

Not necessarily, if I remember correctly Demigod didn't have a NDA. (I broke and pre-ordered yesterday, so I'll find out soon enough.)

Civ 4 has the same mechanic - once your empire gets past a certain number of cities, inefficiencies become noticeable and you might want to spin off some islands or the like.

One of the things that will make Elemental different from anything Stardock has developed before is that we will view the release date of the game as the beginning of its life rather than the climax.

So when Gal Civ 2 was released it was the climax of the game? Same with Demigod? Stardock releases games that need additional content and tweaking when they're released and I'm happy that they follow up on games they release, but this is nothing new for Stardock.

They're referring more to the emphasis on user-generated content, in the same way that Neverwinter Nights's release was just the beginning of its user life as people began to generate content. The campaign that came with NWN was just the core of the game: the real meat came later.

Hopefully the content creation and sharing portion of Elemental will be solid, as that has the potential to really make this game something special in the 4x genre.

I don't believe there will be NDA's for the beta release, and the other poster is correct, once this initial beta phase closes it won't open again for a bit.

Demigod is not a Stardock developed game. Just published by Stardock.

I have a feeling that I'm going to love this game, but the art direction is really turning me off.

It looks like they're using the cell shading as an excuse not to have detailed models. They look really flat, reminding me (weirdly) of something from the early VGA era. Compared to the creative, intricate models in King's Bounty, HOMM or even Civilization, they're kind of lackluster.

I kind of like the art. Maybe its because I love 2d art but the art style tickles my fancy.

Same here. I think it's a deliberate homage. After all this is the MoM game that Stardock wanted to make if Atari weren't jerks.

I actually found a MoM disk I bought a long time ago when MicroProse re released MoM, MoO, X-COM and terror from the deep in one big package. I am tempted to see if I can get it running in dos box.

It runs dandy in DOSbox. I invariably fire up some MoM when I bring my creaking, ancient laptop to my yearly jury summons.

At least, you tell people that jury duty is the reason you need to go to the courthouse.

Nice, thanks for the videos.

Thanks for those videos, I'm going to post them on Impulsedriven if you don't mind.

When I was in Japan, Master of Magic was actually released for the PS1. I liked MoM, but it seemed to drag a bit later in the game. Age of Wonders 2 and AoW2: Shadow Magic scratched the same itch (and I should install Shadow Magic if I dig out the disks). AoW2:SM seemed a pretty solid successor, inspired by MoM.

I'll be another interested to hear Elemental: War of Magic impressions.

Based on the design they're aiming for, Elemental is one of my absolute most-wanted games, right up there with the likes of Diablo 3 and Dragon Quest IX. That is very, very high praise coming from me. I hesitate to anticipate a game that much, but part of this is based on my experience with the quality of Stardock's previous offerings.

Do what you want with them, it's your games =).

Quite fun to watch those. I think I was in the audience during that one.

I can't wait for the inevitable epic mods.

Beta begins this week.

The beta is live now. I need to go pre-order so I can get access.

Awesome! Should we start a beta impressions thread?

Installing.
.. what's wrong with the Catch-All?

It's 4 pages already - I know I personally hate wading through 4 pages of anticipation to finally get to the info I need to consider a purchase (or pre-order, in this case).

True. Heh.. maybe edit the first post to include timeline... Beta impressions begin after page 4. The flipside is that with a separate thread the Catch-all drops off the radar until release time and then some unfortunate schmuck gets coughed.
Don't mind either way to be honest, so create away!

I do not see a new Beta thread as of yet. Feel free to cough me.

I am downloading now. So far there is now NDA, just a normal EULA, but there is still plenty of time when I install it or sign in to it.

I don't expect one, and Island Dog didn't think there was one either, but I'm still keeping my eye out so I don't get in trouble.

Downloading now =).

Just loaded up the Beta. I won't spoil anything, but the intro is absolutely hilarious and reminds me why I love this company.

Don't expect any real impressions for a while. Currently the beta is little more than a tech demo for the game engine. They're going to add in more gameplay elements soon but right now I think they're focusing on testing hardware compatibility.

The intro screen was great though.
