SOCOM: Confrontation Catch-All [1.50 = Finally OUT!]

I have a feeling it's going to be real hard to get any goodjers' interest in Socom until next Spring, if that. There are just too many great games on the shelf and Socom will inevitably end up on the backburner for quite a while!

That's exactly where I'm at with it. There's such a glut of games and I have so little time to play them that I'm literally going to be playing Fable II and LBP most of the rest of the year, I imagine. I personally would be interested in Socom. I'm always up for a multiplayer game where there is a large Goodjer critical mass. However, it would be nice if that critical mass lasted longer than a week. And it would be nice if that critical mass were large enough to warrant even more money out of my pocketbook.

If those two things happen I'll jump in, though. Maybe I should just pick up TF2 for my laptop and get it over with.

[quote=93_confirmed][quote=Donan]Is there a place to look at old SOCOM II or III maps?

www.seasnipers.net. Go to the Maps section and then the button for Socom I and II maps (these were all created by the Sea Snipers clan and they're the best Socom maps out there). They didn't get around to getting all 22 done because S3 dropped but the majority are there. If I could vote for a few in DLC it would be: Fish Hook, Enowapi, Blizzard!

Thanks! I was almost ready to get my PS2 hooked-up and load II just to take a look again:>)

I've been avoiding it until the community stuff is added and all the little issues are ironed out.

I'm almost doing the same thing. I've taken the time to jump into Fallout 3 while the community features are still on their way.

Same goes for my wife and our friends.

The instant the clan & party system go 100% online, it'll be SOCOM (and Left 4 Dead) all day, every day. Until then, it's an extended beta.

I've played a little bit and was actually doing fairly well for my first foray back into Socom.

Some thoughts:

GOOD
Weapon selection, weapon sounds, animations and camera (especially while prone and zoomed in, feels really slick). Levels are well layed out, and offer a variety of tactical choices.

BAD
Load times. For a game that's running off the hard drive damn it takes ages to get into a game.

Graphics. Something about the way the characters interact with the world just feels off, like all the players are floating amongst the levels.
The shadow effects are awful as well, but that doesn't really affect gameplay.

Community features. I really hope this gets fixed so it'll be easy for goodjers to get together. As it is now PSN almost feels like it's actively trying to keep you apart. The whole "Channels" thing is somewhat silly.

The speed. This game moves too fast. As someone who was hoping for a more tactical game the run and gun bunnyhopper can easily be king here. It's so easy to run into battle with your sensitivity cranked and whirl about firing bullets into anything that moves. Slowing it down a bit would help that significantly.

Bugs. How a bug making it so a level doesn't end when the bomb is planted still exists 1. numbers into their version is beyond insane. This is the patched game!? Man I'd have been pissed if I bought this at launch.

Funny choice of words, since "bunnyhopping" is simply not possible in the game. You can jump over an obstacle, but you most certainly can't hop around and shoot.

Well I'm picking this up tomorrow more then likely mostly for the headset(resistance 2 ftw) and then waiting for the game to be fixed. Once everything is ship shape I'll be on Socom hopefully getting my old Socom 1 clan back together.

I hate bunnyhopping and was sad to see it show up more and more in this game. Folks do it to supposedly make it harder for them to be sniped. But also just to be shot in general. T

From the PSN forums of SOCOM. First glimpse of SOCOM in HOME. Interesting:

I'm hoping this is a positive step in preparation for matchmaking/party, but at least for me and a few other's I've read on the board, all my statistics have be zeroed out PLUS, I'm no longer part of a Clan. Now this could be just for me, or all Clans have been voided. In either case, *Legion* will need to send out new request again for me and perhaps all others who wanted to join.(bummer).

EDIT: I still have my SB next to my name. Just nothing on my Clan records.

EDIT 1: My stats came back, but still trouble accessing Clan data.

Yeah perhaps bunnyhop was the wrong choice of words. It's just that the gameplay often devolves into a frantic circlestrafe while trying to land the most hits in. That said the longer-range gameplay is top notch. I really dig the scopes and definitely the weapon sounds. When's this community patch supposed to be out? I'm really anxious to try this with some other goodjers.

I have a question on the headset. Is there anything in the game or on the disc related to the headset? I was thinking of getting just the headset off of eBay as a few people have it up for cheap and then picking up SOCOM off of the Playstation Store one of these days. I mostly really want the headset right now but don't want to get screwed if I just get the headset on eBay. I'm curious about the game as well but I don't foresee me playing it for a month or two once I've cleared out some other games.

Also, some impressions of the headset would be great

Bang for the buck it's phenomenal. I've been using it primarily as a blackberry Bluetooth device and the audio is clear and I had no complaints from the other end. I look at it as a Bluetooth headset that happened to come with a game

No. All the headset functionality came via a PS3 firmware update. If your firmware is up to date (which, obviously, it is if you're getting online), then you have everything you need to use the headset.

Awesome, thanks guys. Gonna have to do some more pondering and watch the eBay auctions

We sort of know this already, although I thought this could only happen in a custom game and by the person who created the room. But supposedly not:

'...

YOU ACTUALLY CAN INVITE A FRIEND TO A GAME:

I found this out last night. What you do is you join a custom game or a server game. When you join the game you will be taken to the game lobby where you see the to sides if mercenaries and commandos. There will be a button that says friends list. That button is SELECT. Then you find you buddy and check his name and hit done. Now you buddy goes to messages in the socom GAME and you will see a custom in game invite. You click on that and accept it.

Now here comes the weird part. It says go to briefing room to join the custom game. Now there is only one way to do this I found.

You go to briefing room and DON'T CLICK SELCT CHANNEL THAT will screw it up. What you want to do is just select JOIN GAME. MAgiclly you will be join your buddys game. THis invite system sucks but it works.

...'

'...

Yeah, most people are aware of this, but it blows and would be easier to just follow from the friends list. Why should I have to stop and invite a friend when it would be so much easer for my friend to go to his friends list click on my name and instantly be in my game.

...'

I'll try to be online tomorrow night to play some.

Posted at SOCOM.com this afternoon. Sounds like 1.30 will be another week because it's just starting the testing phase. And because of loud(!) feedback on his previous post about backing away or never promising the 'join a friend' feature, he's slowly relenting to trying to solve that feature. Anyway, it's all here:

SOCOM: Confrontation 1.30 Update
Posted by Seth Luisi
Hello,

I wanted to provide a quick update to everyone in the community regarding the current status of the SOCOM: Confrontation 1.30 update.

We are almost finished with development on the update. The team at Slant Six Games are wrapping up all of the remaining features and fixes which will be included in the 1.30 update and expect to deliver a final candidate to SCEA First Party QA soon. Once SCEA First Party QA receives the final candidate they will need some time to play through the update and verify that there are no issues with it. This takes some time as there are a lot of new features and the trophies themselves take many days of play to acquire them all. SCEA First Party QA has been testing the 1.30 update throughout development but they need to perform a final pass on the master candidate to make sure nothing has been missed. Once SCEA First Party QA has finished with their final verification we will submit the patch to SCEA Format QA who must also test it and approve it for release. SCEA Format QA must approve all games and updates released on the PlayStation®3.

We will try to keep the community up to date as the SOCOM: Confrontation 1.30 update makes its way through the final release process.

As I'm sure many of you have noticed, we've released some new Ranked medley games this morning. Based on feedback from the community, we added 8x8 and 4x4 Demolition medley games. We also fixed the respawn medley games so that they are actually “respawn” games and lowered the round time from 8 minutes to 6 minutes. This is just the first round of changes we have planned for the medley games. We plan on updating them again soon to offer more variety in the default ranked medleys. If you have any feedback on specific medley changes you would like to see, post it in the forums.

Finally, I wanted to address some of the feedback we received from the Dev Q&A on Monday and specifically the Q&A regarding joining a friend’s game directly from the friends list. As mentioned, this is something that we are actively investigating and looking to see if it is possible to include in a future update. I can say that it will not make it into the 1.30 update but we are looking to see if we can make finding your friends’ games easier in 1.30. Adding the feature to join your friend’s game directly from your friends list to the 1.30 update would significantly delay the 1.30 update and we want to get the 1.30 update out ASAP as it really improves the game a lot. Some people took my answer to this question to mean that we will not implement the feature at all, which is simply not true.

Regards,

I got this yesterday. Played a few matches. I would be up for more. It seemed like a decent enough game.

Okay, so I played this yesterday. And I know you guys who loves this game are pretty hardcore about this game. And I know this game has been surpassed, in some respects, by other shooters people play. But I found it enjoyable. Especially as a "pack-in" for my Bluetooth headset, I thought it was great. I guess what I'm saying is, I think I'm missing where all the hate is come from. It's no Halo 3. But I really enjoyed playing it, being part of a team, etc.

Most of the hate is coming from diehard fans like myself who have been playing the series since it's launch in 2002. We've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. Confrontation is definitely a good game IMO but there are a number of illogical things that Slant Six has done during the development that should not have happened. Hopefully, a few of those will be addressed with 1.30.

SOCOM isn't a polished product the way a Halo or a Gears of War is.

But it's pretty much the only popular shooter that can still be called "tactical" with a straight face. Many of us SOCOM fans have looked for something to replace SOCOM with, but franchises like Rainbow Six have just continued to creep in the opposite direction (don't get me wrong, loved both R6: Vegas games, but they're creeping dangerously close to being Quake with M4s).

SOCOM has some maddeningly regressive control issues (like, switching weapons) and a menu system that just hurts, especially with the party system still not yet patched in. But its lack of polish and shine is well compensated for by its substance.

Not much happening of late, although over at socom.com they are showing a few screens of what will come in the 1.30 update (transparent scoreboard in game and the use of D-pad for leaning). But today they have set-up a profile called 'Glitch' that you can PM with any you have run across. (I've already set one in with a couple things.) For more information head over to the above address.

Still just playing Left 4 Dead while waiting for the eventual party system patch.

I just got the game this past Sunday. I like what I see. However, while my first stint with the game was with a couple of swell dudes, my second experience was, well, lacking in maturity. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'd love an invite to the Squishy Brain clan! Thanks!

The devs posted videos of some of the changes coming with 1.30: dive-to-prone, d-pad lead, and transparent scoreboard! Check 'em out.

This message is missing a critical piece of information that would make this possible.

SOCOM.com posted a video showing "gear stacking" (if you take two sets of frag grenades, you no longer have to select them separately).

More importantly, they claim the weapon wheel no longer requires you to point *exactly* at the weapon in order to select it. Hopefully this means you just need to point in the general direction, no more of this "left and a bit up" garbage to select a grenade.

I just picked this up, partially for the headset and partially to play the game. PSN tag is ringmar, if anyone wants to add me. I'll be the worst player in the room you join :).

*smacks forehead* And here I was thinking it would show up in some sort of footnote, being in my profile and all. . . um . .yeah. PSN id: FightingMack

James and Mack, you have PSN friend requests waiting from me. Accept them and then I can send a clan invite.
