SOCOM: Confrontation Catch-All [1.50 = Finally OUT!]

I picked this up today in the TRU sale. I'm thinking about opening this weekend or early next week (when I'm done with Dead Space). My PSN id is Skeletonframes. Somebody friend me up and look in awe at my 4 trophies. woo hoo!

I'm a Socom virgin so when I do get on, someone is gonna have to hold my hand for a little. I wasn't going to open it, just return it for Little Big Planet or FarCry2, but that headset is too damned tempting.

The IW is nice but stick to the M4A1 IMO. It's has virtually the same stats but less encumberance.

O.k. That's my preferred weapon. It does the deed.

Wow, the game is completely f'd right now. Forums are blowing up with people having trouble getting into rooms and games. I can't even get past the Network Initialization. It looks like the beta all over again.

This is probably the worst user experience I've ever had with a console game. Tons of errors and counterintuitive problems.

- launch game. Error: you need to go back and run a separate installer
- long install
- Launch game: 500mb update required
- update complete: save game corrupt. Return to main menu, delete save game
- start game: network initialization error.

I guess I'll try it tomorrow.

Sent out clan invites to the people in this thread. Make sure to check your messages to find it.

Indeed. The install thing is dumb - other games have no problem detecting the need to install when running the main launcher.

The main saving grace is that this hassle is all initial start-up hassle, not constant user experience issues. A lot of that hassle obviously stems from taking what's ideally a PSN download, and putting it on a disc. That transition should've been thought out a bit better.

I was finally able to get into a stable 8v8 medley after much blood, sweat, and tears. The stats and clan stuff is jacked but everything else looks good.

I wish the medley rooms had all of the maps listed. They're missing Fallen and Kasbah from what I've seen. Also, the medleys always have And, there needs to be a way to vote maps a la COD4. NO ONE wants to play Crossroads after a month of it in the beta.

I too got into a ranked medley. Everything was going fine till my 5th game, the I got the freeze and had to reboot the console. But up till then, just minor lag with 8x8 and good fun (especially because this team communicated allot which really adds to the experience.)

I also had to fight thru network failure initialization over and over again. Also, just once out of over a dozen times (and thinking it was just disabled) did I actually NOT get blue boxes telling me stats, profile etc. would not work or is corrupted because of server problems. But I did glimpse it once! Anyway, just being patient knowing things will smoothe down shortly (cross-fingers).

Yes, I do too. Guess what map I was on first...Crossroads! *Chuckle* However this one was a control one and they had allot of the ally's and stairs blocked so it was much smaller in reality. What I didn't realize was you could actually blow these walls down to get to another area using your grenades. But the map I played mostly was (I don't have the names down yet) was the one with like Roman ruins motif that had hills and valleys. Nice waterfall and lot's of cover of every type. Loads of fun and gorgeous imho. ('Fallen'!)

Anyone know off hand what you use to vote folks off (kick)? They had a couple folks that either had frozen or was severely camping and people were voting and I didn't have a clue (and I usually don't vote anyway unless I actually see the infraction or hear about it from someone I know...I've seen this function be abused).

To vote you go to the player list in-game, scroll to the name, and hit X to prompt the vote. Then everyone else has to do the same thing. I rarely seen anyone actually get booted because people don't yet understand how to cast the vote.

Yeah, I didn't get it at first either. People will figure it out.

Thanks. I was really looking forward to putting some time into the game today. But after playing about 8 round, 2 freezes (reboot) and finally trying a dozen times or so for about 10 minutes plus to get into the servers I gave up. I'll maybe try later if time permits. My play time is precious and to waste it on all this hooey. Geeze. (why didn't Zipper keep the franchise?)I know it will get fixed, but I just can't believe these folks couldn't of prepared better. Especially on-line functionality WHICH IS THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN PLAY THIS GAME. It's strictly an MP game, yet it looks like they went to make pretty maps and not have all the MP functionality in place. They had 2 years, right? At least(!) to get into a server to play. (sorry about the yelling above, but I really like this game...and probably would like it allot more if I could play(!) it.

This has to be a black eye for Sony and /6. I mean, come on. I feel like I'm dealing with a PC with all it's quirks for gawd sakes. Not a console.

Call of Duty 4 had a similarly problematic launch on the PS3. It's kind of par for the course for new big online titles on PS3. I wish they would bite the bullet and build something comparable to Xbox Live. I'd pay the $50 for it.

I feel exactly the same way. Slant Six has been working on this for 3 years+, it's and established franchise, online-only, and Sony is the publisher. There is no reason why this game shouldn't running smooth as silk at launch, especially when it's been heavily tested for a month+ in the beta. I'm obviously going to stick with the game because I'm a diehard fan but I feel bad for all of the newcomers who are smacked in the face with such a horrible experience. Slant Six and Sony should be embarassed that their number one shooter is in such bad shape.

Damn... Looks like I'll be waiting a bit on this one. Not that there isn't enough to play now anyways :p

So it sounds like when UPS comes tomorrow I'll be opting to play Dead Space in the hope that Socom won't be a total train wreck the first time I fire it up...

Yeah, stay away for a bit until things get ironed out. I'm going to play (try) later to see how things are looking and will post an update.

The servers are finally back up and all seems to be well. *knocks really hard on wood*

This game is SO GOOD.

Non-SOCOM junkies, wait a week, let the first patch or so come out, and then come running. The game is so much fun, just let all the ancillary sh*t get ironed out.

(I'm finishing up Ratchet & Clank while the servers are down, and I'll be blasting through Dead Space this week too)

Hey I am actually in and playing right now. Excellent

I'll check in tomorrow and see if everything's still peachy. If so I'll probably hop on tomorrow evening to get my feet wet.

I played a good 2 matches or so (8 rounds each) but now it seems to be having the problem where whenever anyone joins a lobby in waiting (after the match is over) when they ready up they get booted. Its frustrating because you can't just launch the game outright, you have to wait for a number of ready-ups.

So far the game is pretty fun when you can actually get into it.

Perhaps if we all tried to get into a private game this evening we might have better luck.

A temporary server update has been performed to improve the server related issues you have been experiencing. As a result, some user and clan related information may not be available. We are working to correct the problem and will restore this information ASAP.

Yes, until the community features get patched back in, we'll do it the old fashioned way.

Which isn't all that different from how we play, say, Gears of War on Xbox Live - but, sadly, without the easy friend invite capability that XBL provides (all hopefully being resolved with Home's release, but still...)

Just to get the ball rolling I will propose a 8 pm EST game this evening.

Sounds good. I won't be able to start the room (west coast = get off work at 8pm EST, and I have to get some things done for my wife's birthday tomorrow), but I will late join if someone else gets the room started.

I'm not sure I can make it tonight, but if I do, once your create a room, give us the Channel, room etc. so we can go look for it. (or some other way that I'm not aware of that could help us find where you are).

Since the announcement above lot's of folks are reporting that the servers are much better.

Man, just getting to the menu with this game the first time is an ordeal. I wanted to get the updates and stuff out of the way before I went to play later tonight and put the disc in, only to then get the message about the install. And on from there.

A 500mb patch is no small thing either with how slow my PSN downloads usually are. I might have it downloaded by 7 o'clock.

I haven't had this much trouble with any game, even PC games, ever before.

Remember too Thin' that once you download the 1.1, go back out and delete your original profile from the initial install. Otherwise you'll get a conflict from the initial profile and 1.1's. It is a hassle to be sure.

Note: Servers are looking good, but here's a good 'grin' pic (of initial socom thread):

Several spots to chuckle at.
