WoW: Cataclysm - SPOILERS WITHIN

Keep in mind that 300K is net. New folks are signing up, but obviously not as fast as other folks are quitting the game.

I'd love to see Blizzard's internals on subscriptions. Who's quitting the game? Is it newer players or older players? Are the new players brand new to the game, or are they past customers returning? What sort of customer churn did they expect for this quarter? Is this what Blizzard projected for this stage in the expansion? In the lifespan of WoW? What are they projecting a year from now? Three years from now?

Regardless, though, Blizzard's bringing in the money. For Jan-June 2010 vs. Jan-June 2011, net revenues are up -- $602M vs. $754M. No idea how much of that is net income. I suspect it's a fairly nice chunk.

N.B.: I'm looking at the "Online subscriptions" (defined as "all World of Warcraft products, including subscriptions, boxed products, expansion packs, licensing royalties, and value-added services") of its 2Q earning report.

TL,DR: Blizzard might be losing customers, but they're still making money.

It's no longer a growth product.. I mean how could it be? Beyond translations into new markets at this point its simply about retention and keeping the lights on. It's fairly obvious from the expansions and the recycling of content. Note.. its not a bad thing.. these games can last for 10+ years simply just giving a core group the same thing over and over..

The "A" Team has long since moved to Titan and that is where their next Growth will come from.

Spot on. residual revenue, and all that jazz.

Is anyone aware of whether Blizzard groups their subscriptions numbers by region? I know that their "11.x million" number is overinflated because it includes huge amounts of accounts that pay by the hour vs an actual subscription, and many of those accounts are just workhouse goldfarming accounts.

edit -- I must admit that if Blizzard creates a monk style class (brewmaster would be close) -- I would seriously consider re upping.

Hell, I'm not that interested in new races since they don't change the gameplay much other than shiny new starting areas. A new class would be awesome, and I'd be all over that as I've indicated elsewhere. Death knight was fun for the starting area, but the gameplay of it sadly didn't click with me.

Also, what would be the other race? Who would become the counterpart to the Pandaren?

I'd think they'll go with a neutral race, since that would be a novelty.

Why do you think that?

Because they need a novelty for their next addon, since new zones and raids obviously didn't cut it.

Also, unlike all other races introduced into the game after the fact, the Pandaren have never had any grief or relationship with either side, which means they would seriously piss off one side by making Pandaren exclusive to the other one.

If they start at high level (Outlands+), I can't see why it would be a problem

I think it would be a nice move and not too complicated to implement, seeing how they made it possible to switch factions within mere minutes. And players have been thirsting for a neutral race ever since Goblins entered the picture.

It might be foolish to fight the decline, put it's hair in a dyed green mohican, rather than to grow old gracefully.

Good point. Not sure growing old gracefully and Activision fits in the same sentence, but maybe.

MMO says there's a new patch out today, presumably to fix the tab-target mess.

New NPCs in 4.3: Void Storage and Transmogrifier

My guesses: account-wide storage and re-skinning gear (like in Aion)

The first one would be nice and since they hinted on BoAs becoming tradeable cross-server, I kinda think this will be it. The second one would be awesome, because it would give every class the option of going back to their favorite tier set like Paladin T2, Warlock T6, Shaman T1 and so forth. I would bet cash money that most people go back to the T2 sets though. Of course DKs would get the short end of the stick, but it actually doesn't matter since all their sets look the same anyway.

Not hunters

My guess: If these are the case, they won't be free.

I will pay any amount of money to use my T11 & T12 gear and look like the green Santa costume I have in my bags.

Transmogrifier!

Unfortunately, though, gnomish engineering will go into creating this thing, which means the side effects could be nasty.

Oh, sure. One minute you think you're getting your T2 armor, the next you're an orc.

Be careful what you wish for.

Tier 7.25 for me. Depending on how it works, I may have to farm Naxx 25 for a few weeks.

How the heck did I miss that Dwarves can be Warlocks now? oO

Sorry my young Worglock, but compared to a Dwarlock, your animations are crappy and you don't look nearly as impressive on a Dreadsteed.

Hail the grand Emperor Dagran Thaurissan! Long live the Dark Iron Dwarves!

Edit: I just had a good chuckle at how up to date the "Starting a warlock" page on WoWpedia is.
"The best way to solo is to send in voidwalker pet (often abbreviated as VW) and give it a couple of seconds to build aggro then DoT (damage over time, these include [Immolate], [Corruption], and Curse of Agony). Wait for mob to die then repeat. If you get aggro simply cast shadow bolt until it dies. If you don't have a voidwalker simply DoT and shadow bolt."

In all my warlock years, I never really bothered with a VW tank except in a few select situations. Things just die too fast. I can't say I've tried it since v4, my warlock leveled to 81 by fishing/cooking dailies, and then I dropped the sub.

Woohoo. First part of the legendary staff quest done.

4.3 = Deathwing, also 3 new 5-mans, you can change the appearance of armor, and store more stuff.

New Raid - The Deathwing raid, making it very likely to be the last patch before the next expansion.

Interesting. By this time in the cycle of WotLK, not only had most of the details of Cataclysm been leaked, they'd already been confirmed (Patch 3.2, the Coliseum Patch, came out August 4th -- a mere 10 days before Fed has posted this very topic talking about Cataclysm spoilers. Patch 3.3, Fall of the Lich King didn't come out till December, 2009.

I realize that Mists of Pandera is still the best theory. I wonder when more news will come out.

Not surprising given the typical lifecycle of MMORPG's.. expansions get quicker to market.. content becomes more repetitive.

Blizzard has said that they wanted to do yearly expansions since vanilla was released. They might actually deliver this time!

And let's put the reality hat back on... There will be a 4.4 with some content to hold everyone over. It's the same as TBC. Black Temple was the "last" raid... Until they put out Sunwell.

Especially since they've been hinting forever that the Old Gods are ultimately responsible for driving Deathwing crazy. 4.3 will have Deathwing, then 4.4 will probably have something related to the Old Gods. Either that, or they finish up the Neptulon/Abyssal Maw storyline.

Firelands was merely a setback!

Alright, who's up for weekly farmruns to get the old tier sets back together for transmogrification? My initial proposal would be Black Temple and Sunwell, since T6 was awesome for most classes.

So I am back putzin around.

Blizzard gave me another 7 day free pass. I'm kinda bummed that they extended the refer a friend xp bonus up to level 80. It is rapidly approaching the "why bother with the 0-60 game". I was hoping they would extend the f2p level to 40 but since they seem to have abandoned the 0-60 game, they may as well make 0-60 f2p.

I would be really happy with that
