9600GT 512MB - decent card?

Title says it all really. My housemate has a friend offering him an old 512MB 9600GT for about half the market price (the friend is upgrading to an SLI setup), and my housemate is wondering if it's a decent card. Anyone have strong opinions?

I have one. It overclocks well and it plays all current games with high settings @ 1680x1050, but if you want 60fps you'll have to turn AA off on the newer games. For example in the Batman demo I get around 40-50 fps with x2 AA and a solid 60 without it.

It's a good card for now, but it's starting to show it's age. I'll probably upgrade in the next 6 months or so.

Depends on what half-market price is.

If half-market price is $35 then go for it.

Agreed. What is the price we're talking about?

Otherwise, they're decent cards.

He's asking AUD$100 (which I think translates to ~USD$80) so it might be a little overpriced. Prices don't compare well between the two countries though - I've seen new PS3 titles at $110 (USD$90) at EB games - which is why I was comparing it to the cost of buying the card new here.

I'll pass the info on to my housemate, thanks!

New 9600gt's are $70 here on Newegg. I'd buy a 4850 for $100 here over a $70 9600gt though. And so I'd apply the same notion to your prices over there.

New 4850s are about $140 here, so it sounds like $100 for a used 9600GT might be too much. Thanks for that!

AUD$100 is not anywhere close to half market price. For AUD$135 (inc GST) you can get a brand new 9600GT with 1GB memory. I'd offer him AUD$60 for it, no more.

Yeah, I just bought one the other day, $105.
I think it was overpriced, but the 1gb thingy caught me out.
It still isn't enough to play full screen res on Call of Duty 5, or Colin Mcrae DIRT.
That's pretty suc cyy considering its way above recommended spec.

My housemate passed on it - combination of your advice and me pointing out he only ever played Heroes of Newerth, which his current card is fine with.
