2K Boston next big thing could be X-Com shooter

Firmly believing that there were no X-Com games released after Apocalypse, I am kind of thrilled to hear that someone might do X-Com justice in the form of a shooter. Of course I'd dig a complete remake of the original, but if someone can do it right, I have hope that 2K Boston can.

Hasn't this been a well known rumor for some time? I think it was even joked about during the conference call with Ken Levine.

I am so out of the loop (sigh). I need to start reading news more often.

Someone release the source code for the last cancelled attempt at an Xcom shooter. I'd love to check it out.

Xcom shooter

Two words I hoped NEVER to hear attached to each other

Could be worse. It could be:

Xcom hooters

I bought the X-Com package from Steam and wish I had bought the things I wanted individually instead. Enforcer is a continual embarassment to have on my Steam games list.

But if done right, a X-Com shooter could be a lot of fun, especially if the horror angle is done right.

I bought that Xcom Space Sim game. That was horrid too :(. What was I thinking?!?!?! I know what I was thinking. Xcom UFO Defense and Terror from the Deep were so awesome, I was hoping the streak would continue....

I
was
wrong.

If their X-Com game is a "shooter" the way that Bioshock was a "shooter" I'm all about it.

Alien boobies are awesome, as Total Recall showed.

Problem is there's not really anything unique about Xcom's setting. It's just little grey aliens invading the earth.
It was the gameplay that made it different.

That said, its not like Ken Levine's made a bad game so far so i guess I should probably wait to see what it looks like first.

Gives me time to sharpen the knives, just in case....

Yeah, if indeed this is that game, then it's probably been one of the worst kept secrets 'round here.

Normally I'd say, absolutely not. But with Ken Levine working on it and Shawn Elliott somewhere down there in the mix my reaction is, alright.... Sure.

Though they aren't going to use it I bet, that Volition game engine we saw in Red Faction: Guerilla seems like it might have the oomph to realize the old tile based multi-level destruction of the Xcom series.

Maybe an X-COM shooter based on Swat 4 could be fun? Everybody meet on the stairs for stun launcher and cattle prod fun!

X-com.... shooter?!

Is it going to be some sort of drinking game?

I would play any of these games:
X-com remake
X-com shooter if done by Ken Levine
X-com shooter drinking game

but no other Xcom knockoffs.

Yeah his track record for game creation is amazing

Maybe not, but he has a history of being very insightful and intelligent. Those are skills that are highly relevant to game design.

People are going to be so disappointed when it inevitably turns out that they aren't doing this at all. I mean seriously, this whole thing started from a Surfer Girl blog post, which is clearly someone making random assumptions knowing her "fans" will only remember when something she claims turns out to be true and not the vast majority of times she's so wrong there should be no doubt that she isn't an industry insider at all. There is no evidence and the tiny bit that has said about the next 2K Boston title sounds like a new IP completely.

If kuddles is right I will begin work on the drinking game. Perhaps every time one of your recuits misses a shot you drink?

I cannot read your posts any longer Rat Boy; that image of you just doesn't jive. I need a profile shot, chomping on a cigar, preferably with you flashing the thumbs-up. Oh - also with shades.

In other news: I'd be willing to check out a X-Com shooter by 2K Boston.

A squad based shooter would fit X-Com just fine, remember these guys made SWAT 4.

Not you too. *slaps forehead*

Yeah, everybody should read the Gamespot article linked in the OP. This is piling speculation on top of speculation.

You got a problem with the 'stache, ese?

An X-Com shooter? That's about as likely as a Warhammer 40k shooter!

I like the stache... it makes you look smexy. Plus you look quite like one of my old bosses who told awesome stories when we were getting drunk.

Xcom Xcart-Racer?

The others who mentioned a Swat-4 style shooter were right, that COULD work really well!

Unfortunately, I worry that an Xcom shooter will probably not light up the sales charts no matter how good it is. The license is a relative unknown to the general (especially non-pc) gaming public, and significant amount of the series' fans seem reluctant to try it on account of the shooter aspect, if this thread is any indication.

I wonder if Surfer Girl is Michael Pachter in disguise? They sound pretty much the same if you replace "fans" with "gaming press".
