FFXIV: catch all

SpyNavy, the fansites have finally been given the beta keys they were originally "supposed" to get on like the 11th (i.e. before FilePlanet got 'em). I have also heard from the rumormill that FilePlanet has keys as well now.

FYI for us non closed beta people.

Didnt they try this with XI and it took it away or scrapped the idea?

The short version is that for each class and character, you will get normal experience for eight hours, followed by a slow drop-off over the next seven hours that ends at no experience gain. This goes for both class levels and physical levels, which means that after 16 hours of play your character's physical level cannot advance further until a week has passed from the start of leveling.

Either way unless this goes completely away... I wont be buying the game.

My love for SE would so bias any argument put forth that I'll refrain from justifying that I'm going to play regardless.

That said, the real question here is how they measure the 15 hours. Does the clock start ticking as soon as you log-in that week? Does the timer decrease only while in synthesis or combat mode?

im so against the concept that even if Bioware did it for SWTOR i wouldnt buy it.

Not that I recall, and I played for about 3 years total. WoW had a plan to do that though; it's line for line the original incarnation of rested experience. Regardless of how you cut it though, it's a bad idea.

But yea, if this winds up in the final product, I'm not bothering with FFXIV.

Fortunately, I play far fewer hours than what it will take for the diminishing returns to even begin to matter (I read an updated explanation of it last night), so it's a non-issue for me.

I know I'll end up trying this one out eventually, just a question of when.

I'm going to give the open beta a chance before I decide whether to cancel my pre-order, but this game is sounding more and more like it's not for me.

Their design closes the loop on a trend that started with EQ. I won't insult the collective intelligence here with a rehash of MMO history. It's easy to see that we've now gone from very hardcore without choice to very casual without choice.

Putting limits on how much or how little someone plays it just silly. I'm an adult and able to manage my time. The bleeding hearts that dont like it on either side of the scale can all go die in a fire. I dont Female Doggo or complain about their mediocrity. Why would they impose some kind of system trying to keep everyone that plays their game equal. People need to jump ahead and push the boundries. If you didnt have groups of people constantly pushing out like that the game would become boring.

Starts Aug 31st

It seems to me that the only thing this system is trying to accomplish, is preventing people from reaching level cap too quickly and apparently, they don't have enough end game content prepared yet. I'm sure they will launch with that "feature" and work on end game stuff, and eventually, they will remove or make changes to this system, and everyone will praise SE, as a company that listens to their customers.

Good plan.

I'm doing the same, if I hate it I will cancel but I will give it a fair shake first.

I'd actually say that WoW was truly as far to the other end of the spectrum as you could get, but I haven't played FFXIV yet either. I'd be very surprised if it was more casual than WoW is, even with this. I'll definitely give it a test drive during open beta, but it will really have to blow me away to have a chance at this point.

Brand new here. Hello /curtsy

I joined to talk about FF 14 and other games. I never played 11, but I'm so excited for this MMO! Mainly because I'm happiest when MMO'ing with someone and am in between games since leaving wow. Plus, I need something to hold me over until Bioware's Star Wars. Here is my question, what are the plus's and minus's of the races in FF 14. Racial abilities, RP wise, aesthetically everything. I for one think having a tail as a Miqo'te would be the bees knees. Think of all the role play possibilities of it "having a mind of it's own" etc. Plus, having a tail and cute ears just seems like the playful type of toon I love to play. What about you guys?

Girly welcome to GWJ. Check out the other threads as well we have quite a wide range of topics being discussed and you may find something besides MMO luffles to chat about :).

Sadly i don't think we'll have stats for the races for a while yet, once the open Beta goes live Wednesday we'll definitely have more information at least from an artistic point of view.

And if the cat races are anything like the FFXI Mithran's there will be plenty of cute cat ears and tails to go around.

As a former FFXI player i rolled on up with an Elvaan character because while i did like the idea of playing a cat person for some reason i couldn't get around the concept of playing a female character with people who knew me in real life. If i had just been playing with interwebs peeps who didn't know me then I'd probably be more okay with it. But my big burly Elvaan named Cayne was going to be a dragoon (yes in homage to Kain) but that class ended up stinking so badly in the earlier days that i went ranger.

I'm probably going to check out the open beta if their still allowing people in, a quick check of their site leads me to believe otherwise but we'll see. If enough GWJ'ers get into the open beta we should try and establish a single server/guild group that we can all be a part of to increase the odds of finding good groups no matter the time.

Starting the beta download. I doubt this game will be for me, but I'm not too informed on it either.

Where are you downloading it?

I'm downloading the installer which is from the FF14 website (http://entry.ffxiv.com/na/index.html) and is 117 MBs. I'm assuming the game will download after that which I've heard can take a while (probably longer today than in a week or so).

actually the different races do have different bonuses. Like off top my head the Elezen are better out of the gate as Archers and the Lalafell are better mages. Most of the similar races match up with what they were in FFXI.

Ya i was topping out at around 24kb when downloading.

I've gotten up around 300kb/s for the second portion of the install after the installer.

Really? Have a link with definite info? I'd like to read up before beta starts.

Finally did the benchmark last night and got a 3400, was a little dissapointed but oh well, still should run it pretty well.

According to Massively, the open beta has been delayed indefinitely.

Eh, they're just drumming up hits. They delayed it from the original start, and they haven't put a date on it, but it'll happen eventually. At least I hope so.

I think there's a ffxiv wiki out there that should have what you need. There's probably even other sites with more indepth info. People have been spilling on this stuff since Alpha.

Edit: here's the wiki http://ffxiv.wikia.com/wiki/FFXIV_Wiki

Sweet. Gracias.

I was thinking that there weren't racial differences since you pick where your stats go when you level.

You can do that but each race starts with a different set of stats. So depending on what youre going for it can give you a head start but as you know in XI after awhile it doesnt matter eventually everyone maxes everything out.
