FFXIV: catch all

I've reached the near end of Heavensward, and still do the Roulette that has them just so I can get more poetics to gear my classes with the Shire gear (because instead of alts, I am leveling all the jobs). Just finished gearing up my Paladin, so next will be my healers.

Every time I do these though, I am reminded of how much more I love every single dungeon of Heavensward so far. Boyfriend, friend with whom we started, and I were lamenting that we're near the end of this expansion, because everything about it has felt better than the patch/post-ARR slog leading into this.

Yeah, a friend of mine just reached Heavensward and can't stop gushing about the overall jump in quality - the dungeons, the art direction, the characters, the overall storytelling. I'll be curious what you think of Stormblood and Shadowbringers!

Everything is better than the post-ARR slog, IMO.

They did trim up the post-ARR slog, I think they removed 10 quests or so from it? I wouldn't be shocked if it was just all of the 'got to the waking sands' ones.

But it made me quit the game the first time I got there. I only just came back after years away from it.

Once I finished the main quest, all these unlockable quests opened up, so I'm going through those. It's kind of amazing.

ALSO FLYING IS AWESOME. The cake lure for the fat Chocobo is wonderful.

It went from 242 to 210 quests in 2.0 (that might include all 3 starter cities' quest lines, not sure). For the 2.x quests, it dropped from 100 to 80. They also trimmed some of the remaining ones so they're not as padded. Additionally, you unlock flying once you finish the 2.0 quests, which makes traveling MUCH faster. It's still a lot, but it's definitely better.

Got my crafters all levelled up in preparation for EW. I guess I need to stop putting off fishing!

Why in preparation for EW?

I just want to hit the ground running. Getting important crafts to the marketboard before supply catches up is a great way to make some quick gil. Having all jobs at 80 allows me to be self-sufficient for (near) pure profits.

Much better to have them all ready to go rather than needing to level them (which can take weeks) for important EW gear crafts. It's also much more efficient to level these jobs all together so you're not holding onto different sets of gear for different level tiers, which is something I realised far too late.

Unfortunately, I sorta missed the boat for gil-making in this expansion as the Exarchic gear is honestly more effort than it's worth, when I can get the same amount selling 99x quick crafts.

Did my first beast tribe quest today. Been unlocking them before moving onto the main story. The Kobolds really tugged at my heartstrings, so I feel like I wanna help 'em. The only downside I see in these is that they're not in the "recommendations" or the duty finder, so I could easily forget to do them.

The kobolds are one of the stand-out ARR beast tribes. The mount you eventually get from them is also one of my favorites.

Good to know!

I also started the Hildibrand quest line today. f*cking delightful. I cackled at the "Hildibrand will return in...THE THREE COLLECTORS" movie-like preview.

Alas, I haven't been able to get myself back into the mindset of playing FFXIV. My main job is L57 Summoner, and the only things on my quest book are "Hard" dungeons; I really don't feel competent enough to jump into something like that, fresh off a multi-year hiatus.

I love the Hildebrand quests so much. You're in for a real treat.

I've got hard dungeons on my list too, so I'm pounding out other stuff as well. Unlocking beast tribe stuff was fun.

Hard dungeons are mostly just level cap dungeons. While they sometimes have wackier mechanics, they aren't usually "harder" than leveling dungeons. Often they just delineate the fact that they're new versions of older dungeons. Eventually the "Hard" moniker went away.

Oh that's good to know. I did one today and died a lot.

If you are coming back and at post 50, try queuing for the main scenario roulette. It is dead easy and a good way of getting back into the swing of things in a dungeon.

I have a level 80 dancer, and I believe still have some level 50 hard dungeons in my journal. Don't sweat them.

Let me guess: tonberries?

My next MSQ is Bolt, Chain, and Island. I'm pretty sure I tried this a few times, years ago, unsuccessfully - and it kinda put me off continuing.

Yeah, maybe I should just do this.

God I can't recall, the names so not stick in my head. It was the first time I'd done it and it had a big turtle creature in which you're to fire cannons at it.

I forgot Trials also have that Hard moniker in Heavensward. People have the mechanics down for that fight pretty well now, and as a summoner you can just kill things without too much thought.

I also recommend jumping into an MSQ roulette to help shake the rust off. The level 50 Alliance raids are also good for that. You can always try a new job as well. The Heavensward jobs start at 30 and the Stormblood ones start at 50, so you could level them up to get reacquainted with the game in general without having to start at 1 (though you could do that as well if you want).

That sounds like Stone Vigil Hard, and it's very weird and throws a lot of people. Most of them aren't like that. "Hard" really is a misnomer these days, especially for ARR dungeons--even Ironworks gear is good enough to power through most things, given any sort of basic understanding of mechanics. Don't fear them, they got called "Hard" because "Reused Assets" doesn't sound as good.

I'll also throw down for diving back in. I can't speak to back in the day, but Bismarck is pretty rote now, I'd be aghast if you didn't get enough people who could pretty much carry you through it.

So right now my one annoyance with this game is so many of the quest lines I'm following are like, "Do all this stuff thennnnn get in line for a dungeon." Like, I enjoy the dungeons but not alllll the time! Ugh! I've got four quests in my queue right now, all with the "Use the duty finder to enter such and such." I mean I'll do 'em but break it up a little, game.

Time to start leveling a healer Queue times basically go away for them. Tanks also have pretty short queues.

But yeah I agree, it can bring momentum to a halt when you’re just trying to push through the story and have to wait for that queue to pop.

Get some friends in-game or a guild and ask for an un-sync run. A single higher-level player can solo the dungeons with no wait and take you along. I average 7 minutes to clear a dungeon.

Nono I'm sorry it's not the waiting for a dungeon thing that's annoying, they're rarely too long and if they are I can just do other stuff while waiting, which I love. It's just annoying to be cruising through the world and then the game be like, "stop, you have to do this contained thing now." It's a silly complaint, I know, but it did kill my momentum.

But I have been considering trying a white mage. Maybe now's the time.

Unsyncing is fine for farming, but going through for the first time that way would ruin the experience for me. To each their own, though.

This is my new racing Chocobo Maelstrom Nebula and I luff her.
