It's summer, which means I've switched over to making cold brew in my big glass cold brew carafe.
Pour like 1/3 a glass of cold brew into a bell jar, dump in a scoop of protein powder, mix until reasonably clump-free, fill the bell jar to the top with ice, fill the rest of the way with cold brew, screw on the lid, shake vigorously to mix the rest of the way and give the ice a chance to melt a little.
Breakfast of champions, my friends.
The v60 is working well! In other experiments living in Scotland rarely means it’s hot enough so for the first time ever I have made a mason jar of mixture ( based on the bbc good food recipe) to try cold brew. Will report back in about 24 hours on my first attempt.
FYI for any Aeropress aficionados out there - Aeropress has a new version that returns to the original clear cylinder, albeit w/o the BPA. And I believe it’s been around for a little bit, but there’s also an Aeropress XL now that doubles the volume of the original.
Prices as follows:
Original: $40 https://aeropress.com/products/aerop...
Clear: $50 https://aeropress.com/products/aerop...
XL: $80 https://aeropress.com/products/aerop...
Go: $40 https://aeropress.com/products/aerop...
I have an aeropress and I like it. $80 for two pieces of plastic and a rubber squeegee is ridiculously overpriced.

Can’t say I disagree. It’s by far my favorite coffee maker, but I thought it was a bit much when you could get it at $30.
Welp, they finally made a coffee grinder targeted directly at me:
Love it but juuuuuust got it tonight, so no feedback yet.

I’m not sure I understand what you mean by that. Is your name Opus Jr?

Na. It's just exactly what I've been looking for after having a Bodum burr grinder for years. Not espresso oriented.
I suffered for months because my expensive espresso machine was making shit coffee until someone bothered to tell me that I had to replace my portafilter baskets more than once a never.

Why is that? Portafilter baskets are mostly made of steel, aren't they? It seems like they should last forever with regular cleaning.
I put away my espresso gear a few years ago, but I'm still interested in the mechanics.

Single wall baskets are not an issue, but double wall baskets can get clogged with scale, they walls can collapse, and they can pick up smells.
The seal on my travel mug went today and covered my work bag. Any suggestions on a good replacement from the caffeinated hivemind?

I've got a Stanley that long predates the current fad. Thing is a workhorse. Older version of this model.

Isn't that the one that Ben Affleck used to beat someone to death with in that movie?

I alternate between Zojirushi and Contigo West Loop.
The Zojirushi has better insulation but is more likely to drip a little when I'm drinking out of it. The rubberized plastic on my first West Loop (I'm on my second now) started to degrade after a few years. Both have locking mechanisms and I've carried both around in various bags without a leak or spill.
Thanks all I have ordered a west loop as I could have it by tomorrow.

I've checked and there's no dents or bloodstains on mine so he must've used someone else's.
I got some citric acid tablets to descale our coffee maker. Worked great. Need to do that regularly. Also made some water and citric acid to fill our stainless steel mugs and let soak for awhile. Cleaned all the coffee staining away completely after a light scrub. Super easy way to clean stainless steel coffee mugs.
I have this 30 oz Bubba mug that I just love.
I keeps disappearing from Amazon for some reason and currently isn't listed there. The 18 oz mug on Amazon is not the the one I have so I can't vouch for it. I'm waiting for the 30oz to reappear so I can buy another one.
I love my Highwave moJOEmo travel mug. Keeps things warm for six+ hours, and never a leak. Holds a venti worth of coffee. Bought it twelve years ago. It's hard to knock over, but even harder to fit in a cup holder!

I just use plain white vinegar. Do the same with the dishwasher.
Howdy, ya java-sippin' tonkyhonks -
Would y'all have any recommendations for cheapo gooseneck kettles with manual temperature control (at least within 5° variations, doesn't have to be so granular as to go degree-by-degree) and a live temp. display?
I bought a Hamilton Beach kettle that does all of the above about 5 years ago within $30-50; It may overshoot its target temp by 10° every time, but you can account for that with setting it lower & stirring the excess heat out. However, it's starting to get ever-so-slightly leaky, so I'm keeping my eyes to the horizon for a replacement, but Hamilton Beach discontinued the model and now only seem to sell plain jane kettles that boil & nothing else.
Any reccs, coffee council?
We haven't done a coffee exchange in a while (pre cov?, i don't remember), anyone interested?

I'd be game! I know exactly the blend to send.
I got a Picopresso to replace my aeropress it and it's fantastic. A bit more workflow but it makes true espresso.
I haven't use a home espresso machine but the Wacaco PicoPresso makes stuff that has texture and viscosity and crema. The way the espresso sticks to the side of the cup reminds me of a good barrel aged stout . I've only used it with darker roasts but what I've made with it is well above Starbucks level and seems to be as good as what I'd get in a decent local coffee shop (better than some). It's not significantly more work than the aeropress but the end result is much better (if you are trying for espresso). Everything is in this kit. It's got the tamper, basket, distributor, brush, and even a measuring scoop. The quality of the workmanship on it is very good and it all packs up into something about the size of your fist. Very happy with it.
The nanofoamer replaces a whisk style hand foamer. I can say it does a better job of foaming but I haven't noticed a massive difference. That said, I've only used it three times now. I have seen many youtubers make latte art with it but that part escapes me so far. It's certainly an improvement over the generic hand foamer but not a revelation like the Picopresso.
I have a picopresso, and it's great. I don't use it a lot because we don't drink much espresso, but it's nice to have for once in awhile!
I just got a Baratza Encore for my birthday, and this ol' XKCD classic is feeling relevant once more:
Just replace "cook bacon" with "brew coffee".
I don't understand. Unless you drink it with crazy amounts of cream and sugar (and let's face it, anyone who doesn't drink it black is a monster and deserves to be consigned to the dustbin of history), coffee isn't particularly bad for you?
Guess I'm too sweet for you.
